Chapter 2 - THE LIE THAT COLLAPSED

The first thing I noticed when I entered my attorney's office was the silence.

Everyone was avoiding my eyes.

My attorney, Michael, sat behind his desk with a thick folder in front of him.

A folder with my name on it.

Daniel Carter.

I had spent years walking into rooms like that and making people nervous.

Business meetings.

Investment negotiations.

Corporate battles.

I was the man people waited for.

The man who controlled the conversation.

But that morning, I walked into Michael's office feeling like someone had taken everything I owned and left me with nothing but questions.

"Sit down," Michael said.

I didn't.

"Where is Claire?"

He looked at the folder.

"Daniel."

"Where is my wife?"

"She isn't telling anyone where she is."

My jaw tightened.

"She took my son."

Michael didn't react.

That bothered me more than anger would have.

"You need to understand something."

"What?"

"This isn't a kidnapping."

The words hit harder than I expected.

"What did you say?"

"Claire is Noah's mother."

"She disappeared with my child."

"She left with her child."

I stared at him.

"You are my attorney."

"I am."

"Then act like it."

Michael opened the folder.

"I am acting like it. That's why you need to hear the truth before you make another mistake."

Another mistake.

The phrase annoyed me.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

Vanessa.

The hotel.

The lies.

I looked away.

Michael pulled out several documents.

"Claire started preparing six weeks ago."

"Six weeks?"

"Yes."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why didn't she confront me?"

Michael looked at me.

"Maybe because she already knew what your answer would be."

I didn't respond.

Because I knew he was right.

Claire had always been different from me.

I attacked problems.

She studied them.

I demanded answers.

She collected evidence.

Michael placed a stack of papers on the desk.

"Bank statements."

I looked down.

My name was everywhere.

My accounts.

My expenses.

Luxury restaurants.

Hotel charges.

Jewelry purchases.

Trips.

Everything I thought had disappeared quietly was now sitting in front of me.

Proof.

"She knew."

Michael nodded.

"She knew about Vanessa."

I leaned back.

"How?"

"Your credit card wasn't the only thing she tracked."

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Michael hesitated.

Then he opened another file.

Inside were printed screenshots.

Messages.

Emails.

Photos.

My heart dropped.

The first image was from three months earlier.

Vanessa and me leaving a restaurant.

The second was outside the hotel.

The third was us holding hands.

I stared.

"I never saw anyone taking these."

"Because Claire wasn't looking for revenge."

I looked up.

"What was she looking for?"

"Protection."

The word irritated me.

"Protection from me?"

Michael didn't answer.

That answer was enough.

I stood up.

"She made me look like a criminal."

"No."

He closed the file.

"You made yourself look like someone she couldn't trust."

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell him he didn't understand.

That marriages were complicated.

That mistakes happened.

That I was still Noah's father.

But every excuse sounded weaker in my own head.

Because Claire had been home.

Alone.

With a newborn.

While I was living another life.

I remembered the nights she called me.

The nights she asked when I would be home.

The nights I told her I was exhausted from work.

She believed me.

Or maybe she wanted to believe me.

Michael slid another document across the desk.

"This is the part you need to understand."

I looked at it.

It was a legal notice.

Temporary custody request.

My name.

Claire's name.

Noah's name.

"She filed?"

"She prepared."

"When?"

"Yesterday morning."

I froze.

"Before she left?"

"Yes."

My fingers moved toward the paper.

"She knew she was leaving."

Michael nodded.

"She didn't run, Daniel."

The sentence stayed in my head.

She didn't run.

She planned.

I looked through the documents.

Every account.

Every expense.

Every lie.

Claire had built a timeline.

A complete record of my behavior.

Then I saw something that made me stop.

A note attached to one of the pages.

My handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

"What is this?"

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"That's why I asked you to come here."

I read the note.

It was dated two months earlier.

It was a message I had sent.

Not to Claire.

To Vanessa.

My hands became cold.

Because the message said:

"Once Claire signs the final documents, everything will be easier."

I looked at Michael.

"I never wrote this."

He didn't move.

"Daniel."

"I never wrote that."

Michael pushed another page toward me.

"The metadata says it came from your account."

My heart started beating faster.

"No."

"You don't remember sending it?"

"No."

He watched me carefully.

"Then someone else had access."

I looked back at the message.

Once Claire signs the final documents, everything will be easier.

Final documents.

What documents?

"What is this about?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

"What?"

He opened another folder.

"This is the information Claire discovered before she left."

Inside were copies of company records.

Property documents.

Financial transfers.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then stopped.

A transfer.

A large amount of money.

Moved from one of my business accounts.

To an account I didn't recognize.

"When was this?"

Michael pointed.

"The same week you started seeing Vanessa."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Daniel."

"I didn't do this."

Michael looked at me.

"I believe you."

That surprised me.

"Then why are you showing me?"

"Because whoever did this wanted it to look like you did."

The room went silent.

For the first time that morning, my anger disappeared.

Something else replaced it.

Fear.

"Someone framed me?"

Michael nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

I stood there staring at the documents.

The affair.

The missing money.

The fake message.

The empty nursery.

They were all connected.

But I didn't know how.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Where is my son?"

No voice.

Only silence.

"Who is this?"

A few seconds passed.

Then a recording played.

Claire's voice.

My heart stopped.

"Daniel, if you're hearing this, it means you finally started looking."

I couldn't move.

Michael looked at me.

The recording continued.

"I need you to understand something."

A pause.

"I didn't leave because of Vanessa."

My eyes narrowed.

"Then why?"

Claire's voice became quieter.

"I left because I found out what someone was planning to do to us."

My grip tightened around the phone.

Michael stepped closer.

The recording continued.

"And Daniel..."

A pause.

A long one.

"Do not trust the person who tells you they are trying to help."

The message ended.

I stared at the screen.

Michael looked confused.

"Who sent that?"

I didn't answer.

Because another message appeared.

One sentence.

One name.

And the name was impossible.

Because it belonged to the person who had been helping me search for Claire all morning.

May you like

My phone displayed:

LINDA KNOWS WHERE CLAIRE IS.
