CHAPTER 3: THE ULTIMATE LANDING

The wheels of Flight 407 screeched against the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport, breaking the tense silence that had hung over row 4 for the remaining hours of the flight. Victoria had spent the rest of the journey trying to scrub the dried mimosa stain out of her velvet blazer, while Julian had nervously checked his phone the second the plane touched down, only to find a strange, sudden lack of signal on his corporate network.

"Finally," Victoria hissed, grabbing her stained Chanel tote. "Get the bags, Julian. I want to get to the hotel, get changed, and forget this miserable flight ever happened."

Julian stood up, rubbing his temples. The uneasy feeling in his gut had grown into a full-blown panic. "Yeah, let's go. Something is wrong with my roaming network. I can't access the Vance internal server."

Eleanor Vance remained seated, calmly waiting for the crowd to clear. She caught the eye of Captain Howard, who gave her a sharp, respectful nod from the cockpit door. "Have a wonderful morning in New York, Mrs. Vance," he said warmly.

"Thank you, Captain. Smooth flying," Eleanor replied, stepping out into the jet bridge just behind the bickering couple.

As they exited into the exclusive VIP arrivals lounge, Victoria and Julian expected their usual private chauffeur to be waiting with a sleek black Cadillac. Instead, the lounge was packed with a crowd of suits, high-profile corporate lawyers, and a swarm of flash photography.

"What is going on here?" Victoria muttered, fixing her hair. "Is there a celebrity on our flight?"

Right at the center of the VIP lounge stood Arthur Pendelton, the legendary Senior General Counsel of Vance Global—a man Julian had tried and failed to book a meeting with for six months. Beside Arthur were four burly, imposing security guards dressed in immaculate black suits.

Julian’s face lit up with arrogant ambition. He straightened his tie and marched forward. "Arthur! What a pleasant surprise. Did you come to welcome me personally? I know the board meeting isn't until ten, but I appreciate the enthusiasm."

Arthur Pendelton didn't smile. He looked at Julian with an expression of profound pity. "I'm not here for you, Julian."

"What do you mean?" Victoria chimed in, stepping forward. "Do you know who you're talking to? This is the future CEO of North American operations. You should watch your tone."

"He is the future of absolutely nothing," a commanding, razor-sharp voice echoed from behind them.

Julian and Victoria spun around.

Walking into the center of the VIP lounge, flanked by two more security details who immediately took her luggage, was Eleanor Vance. The old, scuffed leather journal was tucked neatly under her arm, but the submissive, quiet old woman from the plane was entirely gone. Her posture was regal, her gaze radiating absolute power.

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, bowing his head slightly in deep respect. "Good morning, Madam Chairwoman. The board has been assembled in the airport's private executive suite as per your instruction. The emergency vote has already been cast."

Julian’s blood ran completely cold. The color drained from his face until he looked like a ghost. The puzzle pieces in his mind violently crashed together. The name. The piercing gray eyes. The absolute authority.

"M-Mother?" Julian stammered, his voice cracking, reduced to the terrified boy who had stolen from her years ago.

Victoria’s jaw dropped so low it looked unhinged. She looked at Eleanor, then at Julian, her brain scrambling to process the horrific reality. "Mother? Julian… what is she talking about? Who is this old woman?!"

"Shut up, Victoria!" Julian shouted, his knees literally shaking. He took a step toward Eleanor, his hands trembling. "Mother… I—I didn't recognize you. You’ve changed your hair. It’s been five years! Why didn't you say anything on the plane? This is all just a big misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" Eleanor said, her voice echoing clearly through the silent lounge, capturing the attention of every billionaire and executive present. "You sat next to me for eight hours, Julian. You didn't look at my face once because you were too busy looking down at my shoes. You abandoned your family, you forged my name to steal five million dollars, and today, you planned to strip away the foundations that feed thousands of families just to buy a penthouse in Manhattan."

"Mrs. Vance, please!" Victoria cried out, suddenly dropping to her knees, her voice desperate and pleading. She clutched at Eleanor’s gray tweed coat, the very same coat she had ridiculed hours prior. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know! I was just trying to support Julian. I'm a good person, I promise!"

Eleanor gently but firmly pulled her coat out of Victoria’s grip. "You are an opportunist, Miss Thorne. And a very loud one at that. You told me on the plane that the fall from arrogance is very long. Let’s see how accurate your prediction is."

Eleanor turned her gaze to Arthur. "Arthur, read the resolutions."

Arthur adjusted his glasses and opened a formal leather folder. "As of 8:15 AM today, by absolute majority veto of the Chairwoman, Julian Vance has been stripped of all titles, corporate credentials, and association with Vance Global. Furthermore, the five million dollars stolen five years ago, which was tracked into your tech startup, has been legally reclaimed. Your bank accounts are officially frozen, effective sixty seconds ago."

Julian staggered backward, hitting the wall. "No… no, you can't do this! I’m your son!"

"You ceased being my son the day you traded your integrity for greed," Eleanor said, her voice filled with a heavy, sorrowful finality. "But because I am a mother, I will not put you in prison for the fraud you committed. You will live. But you will live on the ground, working a real job, earning a real wage, until you remember what it means to be a human being."

Two security guards stepped forward, firmly grabbing Julian by the arms and hoisting him away from the VIP area. Victoria screamed, scrambling backward as Arthur handed her a legal document.

"Miss Thorne," Arthur said coldly. "Vance Global’s legal team has filed a preemptive injunction against you for insider trading based on the texts you sent regarding the projected bonuses. You are legally barred from entering any Vance property, and your wedding to Julian is the least of your financial worries. Goodbye."

The crowd of photographers began snapping pictures furiously as Julian and Victoria were practically dragged out of the terminal, completely ruined, their faces destined to be the front page of every financial and tabloid magazine by noon.

Eleanor Vance stood in the center of the lounge, taking a deep, clean breath of the New York air. The burden she had carried for five years had finally been lifted. Justice had been served, the corrupt had been weeded out, and her company was safe.

She looked down at her scuffed leather notebook, a small smile breaking across her face.

"Well, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice returning to its warm, elegant tone. "Let's go to the real board meeting. We have some scholarships to fund."

With her head held high, the silver-haired titan walked out of the lounge, surrounded by the people who truly respected her, leaving the storm behind and stepping into the bright, victorious sunshine.
