Chapter 6 - The Name Above Caldwell

Luca looked through the window.
Six vehicles.
No markings.
No flashing lights.
Professional formation.
“Everyone downstairs,” he said.
Caldwell laughed.
“You brought them.”
Samuel shook his head violently.
“No.”
Caldwell looked confused.
That was the moment Luca understood.
The senator was afraid too.
“Who are they?” Clara asked.
Samuel whispered one name.
“Wexler.”
James went pale.
Rebecca froze.
Clara looked between them.
“Who is Wexler?”
Luca answered.
“Arthur Wexler.”
Clara knew the name.
Everyone did.
Billionaire financier.
Hospital foundations.
Universities.
Museums.
A man photographed beside presidents and kings.
“He funded Caldwell thirty years ago,” Samuel said.
“He built the network.”
Caldwell snapped, “Shut up.”
Samuel ignored him.
“I created the offshore structure. Caldwell handled politics. Wexler owned the system.”
Clara looked at Adrian.
“And my marriage?”
Samuel closed his eyes.
“Wexler wanted the trust records.”
Caldwell shouted toward security.
“Lock the doors.”
Too late.
The estate lost power.
Luca moved Clara and Margaret toward the back staircase.
James took the evidence case.
Rebecca kept the upload live.
Samuel followed.
Adrian hesitated.
Caldwell grabbed him.
“You stay.”
Adrian looked at Clara.
For the first time in three years, she saw him for what he was.
Not powerful.
Not invincible.
Terrified.
He ran after them.
Caldwell screamed his name.
They descended into the basement.
Samuel knew the estate.
“There’s a tunnel to the boathouse.”
“Why?” Rebecca asked.
“Smuggling route.”
Of course.
Luca led them through a steel door.
Margaret’s wheelchair barely fit.
Clara pushed from behind.
Adrian reached them.
“Wait.”
Luca turned.
“Stay back.”
“I can help.”
Clara almost laughed.
“You?”
Adrian looked at her.
“You don’t understand what Wexler will do.”
“I understand what you did.”
“I was trying to keep us alive.”
“There is no us.”
That sentence broke something in his face.
“Clara—”
“You killed Daniel.”
Adrian stopped.
Silence.
James stared.
Adrian looked toward the tunnel entrance.
Then back at Clara.
“I didn’t mean to.”
James moved forward.
Luca blocked him.
“Say it again,” Clara said.
Adrian swallowed.
“Daniel came to my office.”
“What happened?”
“He threatened to expose everything.”
“And?”
“Caldwell ordered me to stop him.”
Clara’s voice became cold.
“How?”
Adrian’s eyes filled.
“I hit him.”
James clenched his fists.
“He fell.”
“Did he die?”
“No.”
James’s eyes widened.
Adrian continued.
“He was alive when Caldwell’s men took him.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
James stared.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
“Daniel’s body—”
“Was identified through dental records Caldwell provided.”
The implication struck everyone.
James whispered, “Then Daniel might still be alive.”
Adrian nodded.
Clara looked at Luca.
His face had changed.
Another ghost.
Another supposedly dead person.
Samuel grabbed Adrian’s shirt.
“Where did they take him?”
“I don’t know.”
“You worked for them!”
“I never knew everything.”
Gunfire sounded above.
Luca pushed everyone forward.
They reached the boathouse.
Cold lake air hit Clara’s face.
A boat waited.
Samuel stared.
“I didn’t arrange that.”
Luca raised his gun.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Late sixties.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
Arthur Wexler.
He smiled.
“Clara Miller.”
No guards visible.
That made him more frightening.
Luca stepped in front of her.
Wexler looked amused.
“Luca. Still trying to redeem yourself?”
“No.”
“Good. Redemption is boring.”
Clara moved beside Luca.
“Where is Daniel Foster?”
Wexler’s smile faded slightly.
Interesting.
Samuel whispered, “Clara, don’t.”
She ignored him.
“Where is Daniel?”
Wexler studied her.
“You have your father’s impatience.”
“My father wasted eleven years hiding.”
Samuel flinched.
Clara did not apologize.
“Answer me.”
Wexler looked toward the lake.
“Daniel was useful.”
James stepped forward.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
The word changed everything.
“Where?” James asked.
Wexler smiled.
“Safe.”
James lunged.
Luca stopped him.
Wexler continued.
“He understood numbers. More importantly, he understood loyalty.”
Clara stared.
“You forced him to work for you.”
“Initially.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means people adapt.”
Clara felt something cold.
“You’re saying Daniel joined you?”
Wexler smiled.
“I’m saying Daniel Foster has been managing my European accounts for almost three years.”
James shook his head.
“No.”
Wexler took out a phone.
He played a video.
Daniel appeared.
Older.
Alive.
Sitting in an office.
Clara’s knees weakened.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“James, if you see this, stop looking for me.”
James whispered, “No.”
Daniel continued.
“Clara, I’m sorry.”
The video ended.
Wexler put the phone away.
“People are complicated.”
Clara stared at him.
“Why are you here?”
“To clean up Caldwell’s mistake.”
“Meaning us?”
“Possibly.”
Luca raised his gun.
Wexler smiled.
“You could kill me.”
“Yes.”
“And then what?”
Sirens sounded again.
Real ones this time.
Wexler looked mildly annoyed.
Rebecca smiled.
“Federal.”
Wexler glanced at her.
“You think federal agents frighten me?”
“No.”
Rebecca held up her phone.
“But markets might.”
Wexler’s face changed.
She had released the corporate files.
His offshore holdings.
Illegal political transfers.
Hospital kickbacks.
Everything.
Wexler moved toward her.
Luca aimed.
“Stop.”
Wexler stopped.
For the first time, the billionaire looked old.
Not weak.
But mortal.
Helicopter lights appeared over the lake.
Federal agents approached the estate.
Wexler sighed.
“Well done.”
Clara stared.
“That’s it?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“This is never it.”
Adrian suddenly moved.
He grabbed Margaret’s wheelchair and pulled her backward.
Clara screamed.
“Mom!”
Adrian held a gun against the wheelchair handle.
“Everybody stop.”
Luca aimed at him.
“Put it down.”
Adrian was crying now.
“I can’t go to prison.”
Clara stared at the man who had controlled her life.
“You’re using my mother.”
“I need a way out.”
“You always need someone weaker than you.”
His face twisted.
“I loved you.”
Clara almost pitied him.
Almost.
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You loved owning me.”
Adrian’s hand shook.
Luca whispered, “Clara, stop.”
She continued.
“You took my money.”
Another step.
“You took my friends.”
Another.
“You took three years.”
Adrian’s breathing became ragged.
“You don’t get another second.”
Margaret suddenly drove her elbow backward.
Adrian lost balance.
Luca moved.
The gun slid across the dock.
James tackled Adrian.
Federal agents flooded the boathouse.
Wexler raised his hands.
Samuel sank onto a bench.
Rebecca hugged Margaret.
Clara stood in the center of everything.
Free.
Not safe yet.
But free.
An agent approached.
“Clara Miller?”
“Yes.”
“We need you to come with us.”
Luca stepped forward.
“Why?”
The agent looked uncomfortable.
“There’s been another development.”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
The agent held up a tablet.
A live video call was waiting.

The name on the screen read:
