Chapter 6 - The Man Behind Every Lie

Richard Wynn looked older than Elara remembered.

Not weaker.

Older.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His suit remained perfect.

His calmness was the worst part.

Julian stepped forward.

“You used me.”

Richard smiled at his son.

“I raised you.”

“You lied about Lily.”

“I protected you from an unsuitable marriage.”

Elara's stomach turned.

“Suitable?”

Richard looked at her.

“You always were emotional.”

Adrian moved subtly closer to Elara.

Richard noticed.

“Interesting.”

His eyes dropped to the ring.

“Sofia's.”

Adrian's voice was cold.

“Don't say my mother's name.”

Richard leaned back.

“You finally figured it out.”

“You killed her.”

“I corrected a problem.”

Marianne lunged.

Adrian caught her before she reached him.

“You murdered her!”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“She was going to destroy everything Carlo and I built.”

“So you killed her.”

“Yes.”

The admission echoed.

Elara looked around.

Adrian's eyes moved toward the small recorder on the shelf.

Richard followed his gaze.

Then laughed.

“Don't bother. I've survived recordings before.”

Marianne said, “Not this time.”

Richard's expression shifted.

“What did you do?”

Marianne smiled for the first time.

“I activated Sofia's dead-man archive when we opened the vault.”

Richard stood.

His calm cracked.

“What?”

“Every file is uploading.”

“To where?”

“Three federal agencies. Two newspapers. One prosecutor who isn't on your payroll.”

Richard's face turned white.

“You stupid woman.”

He reached inside his jacket.

Adrian drew first.

“Don't.”

Richard froze.

Julian moved between them.

“Dad.”

“Move.”

“No.”

Richard stared at his son.

“You think she cares about you?”

Julian's voice was quiet.

“This isn't about whether Elara cares about me.”

“Everything you've done has been for her.”

“No.”

He looked at Elara.

“Everything I did to her was because I was afraid of you.”

Richard sneered.

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Julian stood straighter.

“Not anymore.”

Richard's hand remained inside his jacket.

Adrian said, “Slowly.”

Richard removed a phone.

He smiled.

“Everyone has a weakness.”

Elara's blood chilled.

Richard tapped the screen.

A live video appeared.

Lily.

At the safe house.

Elara screamed.

“No.”

Marco's wife lay unconscious on the floor behind her.

A masked man held Lily.

Adrian's face became something terrifying.

Richard said, “Upload stops now.”

Marianne stared.

“I can't stop it.”

“Then the child dies.”

Elara moved toward him.

“Call him.”

“Stop the upload.”

“I can't!”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Then perhaps Marianne shouldn't have designed such permanent solutions.”

Adrian asked, “What do you want?”

“Everything.”

Richard smiled.

“The archive drives. The ledger. And a path out.”

“You won't get ten feet.”

“I don't need to.”

He held up his phone.

“If I don't send a code every five minutes, the man holding Lily has instructions.”

Elara looked at Adrian.

He understood.

“Give him what he wants.”

Marianne protested.

“Elara—”

“That's my daughter!”

“If we give him the files, people die.”

“My child dies if we don't!”

Adrian stepped toward the shelves.

Richard smiled.

“You understand fatherhood quickly.”

Adrian stopped.

The words hit him.

Fatherhood.

Four years stolen.

One hour discovered.

And already Richard was using it against him.

Adrian picked up the ledger.

“Elara.”

She looked at him.

His eyes held hers.

Trust me.

The same thing he had asked at the wedding.

She breathed.

Once.

Then nodded.

Adrian gave Richard the ledger.

Then the drives.

Marianne looked furious.

Richard put them into a case.

“Good.”

“Release Lily.”

“When I'm outside.”

Julian said, “You won't make it.”

Richard looked at him sadly.

“You were always disappointing.”

Julian flinched.

Elara stepped beside him.

Richard noticed.

Something changed in Julian.

Maybe for the first time, he understood that family was not the person whose blood you carried.

It was the people you chose not to destroy.

Richard moved toward the vault door.

Adrian lowered his weapon.

Richard smiled.

“Smart.”

He reached the corridor.

Then stopped.

Sirens sounded faintly above.

Richard looked at Marianne.

“You lied.”

“No.”

Adrian said, “I did.”

Richard turned.

Adrian held up his own phone.

“The files were already copied before we entered.”

Richard's eyes widened.

“My people sent them.”

“You don't have people left.”

“I have enough.”

Adrian smiled without warmth.

“You had Nolan.”

Richard's face shifted.

Adrian continued.

“And Nolan gave us the address of every secondary team you hired.”

Elara understood.

They had known.

Before coming here.

Lily's safe house attack—

Was it real?

Adrian looked at Richard's phone.

“Tell your man to turn the camera.”

Richard said nothing.

“Turn it.”

Richard tapped.

The masked man rotated the camera.

Marco appeared behind him.

Gun pointed at the kidnapper.

Lily was safe in his arms.

Elara sobbed.

“Mama!”

“Baby.”

Marco said, “She's safe.”

Richard's power disappeared in one second.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You threatened my daughter.”

Richard backed away.

“You're Carlo's son.”

“No.”

Adrian's voice was quiet.

“That is the mistake you made.”

Richard's hand moved.

Julian shouted.

“Gun!”

A shot exploded.

Elara screamed.

Richard fell.

For one horrifying second she thought Adrian had fired.

He hadn't.

Julian stood with a gun in his hand.

Richard looked down.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

“You shot me.”

Julian's hands shook.

“You were aiming at Elara.”

Richard stared at his son.

Police footsteps thundered in the corridor.

Federal agents.

Not Richard's local contacts.

Marianne raised her hands.

Adrian put his weapon down.

Richard remained on the floor.

Alive.

Furious.

Defeated.

Agents entered.

“Federal agents! Hands visible!”

Everything happened quickly.

Richard was arrested.

Marianne surrendered voluntarily.

So did Adrian.

Elara panicked.

“Why are you arresting him?”

An agent said, “Ma'am, we need statements from everyone.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Go to Lily.”

“They'll take you.”

“I'll be fine.”

“How do you know?”

He glanced at Marianne.

“Because she didn't upload only Richard's files.”

Marianne looked ashamed.

Elara understood.

Evidence against Moretti Holdings.

Adrian's organization.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you came anyway?”

“Yes.”

“You could lose everything.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His gaze settled on her.

“Some things should be lost.”

They took him away.

Lily ran into Elara's arms forty minutes later.

Elara held her daughter while federal agents filled the hotel's underground corridor.

Julian gave his statement.

Marianne gave hers.

By sunrise, Richard Wynn's empire had begun collapsing.

Accounts frozen.

Officials suspended.

Warehouses raided.

Arrests.

News helicopters circled the Plaza.

Elara sat in a federal office with Lily asleep in her lap.

She watched Adrian through a glass wall.

He was still being questioned.

No handcuffs now.

But not free.

Marianne sat beside Elara.

“I owe you more apologies than one lifetime can hold.”

Elara stared ahead.

“Yes.”

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

Marianne nodded.

“I thought staying away kept you safe.”

“It kept me alone.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Elara finally looked at her.

“You don't get to say that yet.”

Marianne's eyes filled.

Elara continued.

“You watched me raise Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You could have come back.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

That broke Marianne.

Tears rolled down her face.

Elara felt anger.

Love.

Grief.

All at once.

But she didn't hug her.

Not yet.

Some wounds needed more than a reunion.

Across the room, Adrian stood.

An agent shook his hand.

Then another door opened.

Adrian walked toward Elara.

She rose.

“Are you free?”

“For now.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Moretti Holdings will survive.”

“And the other part?”

“The criminal operations won't.”

“You're giving them up?”

“They're already gone.”

He looked at Lily.

Elara noticed the expression.

He still hadn't touched his daughter since learning the truth.

He was waiting.

Waiting for permission.

That mattered.

Lily woke.

She rubbed her eyes.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Are you Mommy's pretend husband?”

The adults froze.

Adrian crouched.

“If that's what she wants me to be.”

Lily looked at Elara.

“Is he?”

Elara nearly laughed.

“No, sweetheart.”

Lily frowned.

Adrian smiled.

A real smile.

Rare.

Warm.

“See?”

Lily studied him.

“Grandma said you're my daddy.”

Silence.

Elara closed her eyes.

Marianne whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Lily looked between them.

“Are you?”

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Then:

“Yes.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

She considered that for three seconds.

Then threw her arms around his neck.

Adrian froze.

The most powerful man Elara had ever met stood completely helpless before a four-year-old child.

Slowly, his arms wrapped around Lily.

His eyes closed.

Elara looked away because the grief on his face was too private.

Four lost years.

One small embrace.

Lily whispered something.

Adrian laughed quietly.

“What did she say?” Elara asked.

He looked at her.

“She said I owe her four birthday presents.”

Elara smiled despite herself.

“That sounds like Lily.”

For the first time in days, hope entered the room.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

Marco.

Adrian listened.

His smile vanished.

“What?”

Elara's heart sank.

He ended the call.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at Marianne.

“The federal archive received everything.”

Marianne nodded.

“So?”

“One file was missing.”

Her face changed.

“Which?”

Adrian looked at Elara.

“The one Sofia labeled E.W.”

Elara frowned.

“My initials.”

“Yes.”

“What was in it?”

Marianne went pale.

“I don't know.”

Adrian's phone vibrated again.

A photograph arrived.

The missing file.

Someone was holding it.

Beneath the image were six words.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT ELARA SAFE.

Elara looked at the sender's name.

May you like

And her blood turned cold.

Amanda.
