Chapter 5 - The Father Nobody Expected

“Don't move.”
The gunman held Lily against his leg.
Elara stopped breathing.
Adrian's entire body went still.
Lily looked terrified.
“Mama.”
Elara lifted both hands.
“It's okay, baby.”
The gunman was one of Adrian's security officers.
At least Elara had seen him outside earlier.
Adrian recognized him.
“Nolan.”
“Sorry, boss.”
“You will be.”
Nolan pressed the gun closer to Lily.
“Don't.”
Elara's voice cracked.
“Please.”
Adrian's expression became unreadable.
“What do you want?”
Nolan glanced at Marianne.
“The ledger.”
“We don't have it.”
“Then we're going to get it.”
Marianne said, “Richard promised you money?”
Nolan laughed.
“He promised me I would keep breathing.”
Adrian said, “You know him poorly.”
“Maybe.”
Nolan backed toward the hallway.
“Keys.”
Adrian slowly reached into his pocket.
“Nobody follows.”
He tossed the keys.
They landed near Nolan.
Lily suddenly bit his hand.
He yelled.
The gun shifted.
Adrian moved.
One violent second.
A shot exploded into the ceiling.
Elara screamed.
Adrian slammed Nolan against the wall.
Julian grabbed Lily.
Elara ripped her daughter into her arms.
Adrian struck Nolan's wrist.
The gun fell.
Marco seized it.
It was over.
Lily sobbed against Elara.
“Mama.”
“I've got you.”
She looked at Adrian.
He nodded.
Safe.
For now.
Nolan was dragged away.
Adrian immediately doubled the guards.
Nobody slept.
At dawn, Lily sat wrapped in a blanket eating pancakes in Adrian's kitchen as if the night had been a nightmare she was determined to defeat with syrup.
Elara watched her.
Julian stood in the doorway.
“Can I come in?”
Elara looked at Lily.
Lily barely knew him.
Julian had chosen that.
But if Marianne was telling the truth...
He might not be her father at all.
“Five minutes.”
Julian sat across from Lily.
“Hi.”
Lily looked at him suspiciously.
“Are you Mommy's mean friend?”
Elara almost choked.
Julian closed his eyes.
“Probably.”
Lily ate another bite.
“Grandma said you used to make Mommy sad.”
“She was right.”
“Why?”
Julian looked at Elara.
“Because I was stupid.”
Lily considered this.
“Mommy says people can learn.”
Elara's eyes burned.
Julian swallowed.
“Your mommy is smarter than I am.”
“Yes.”
That almost made Elara laugh.
After breakfast, Marianne joined them in Adrian's study.
Elara shut the door.
“Finish what you said.”
Marianne looked at Lily, who was now upstairs with two female security officers.
Then at Julian.
“Richard had Lily's finger-paint sample tested.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because he wanted confirmation that she was your child.”
“And?”
“She wasn't.”
Elara shook her head.
“That is impossible.”
Julian stared at the floor.
Elara turned.
“Tell her.”
He didn't.
“Julian.”
His face looked destroyed.
“There was a night.”
Elara's skin turned cold.
“What night?”
“Three weeks before I left.”
She remembered.
They had fought.
Julian had disappeared for two days.
When he came back, he was distant.
“What happened?”
“My father showed me a DNA report.”
“Before Lily was born?”
“Prenatal testing.”
Elara stared.
“You had me tested without permission?”
“I didn't.”
“My father did.”
“How?”
“Your doctor.”
Elara felt nauseated.
“Was on his payroll.”
Julian nodded.
“He told me the baby wasn't mine.”
The room went silent.
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
“You never asked me?”
“I thought you had cheated.”
Her voice shook.
“I didn't.”
“I know that now.”
She stepped back.
“I loved you.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You destroyed me over a report you never verified.”
“Yes.”
Marianne spoke softly.
“The report was real.”
Elara turned.
“What?”
Marianne put an envelope on the desk.
“I obtained the laboratory archive.”
Elara didn't touch it.
“There was only one man.”
Julian looked up.
Elara's face burned.
“One man besides Julian.”
Nobody spoke.
Adrian stood near the window.
Elara slowly turned toward him.
He had gone very still.
“No.”
Adrian said nothing.
Marianne looked at him.
“You don't remember her?”
Elara's heart pounded.
Adrian's brow furrowed.
“Remember what?”
Marianne said, “The charity gala.”
Elara remembered.
Five years ago.
Two months before she discovered she was pregnant.
She and Julian had broken up for six weeks.
A real breakup.
Julian had disappeared with friends to Europe.
Elara had attended a charity event because her bakery supplied desserts.
She had been devastated.
She remembered too much champagne.
A dark-haired stranger.
A long conversation on a balcony.
A kiss.
Then—
Her eyes widened.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her as though the floor had moved beneath him.
“That was you.”
“I didn't know your last name.”
“I gave you my first.”
“Elara.”
“You said your name was Adrian.”
“Yes.”
She sat because her knees failed.
Julian stood frozen.
Marianne placed the DNA report on the table.
Elara couldn't breathe.
“No.”
Adrian slowly approached.
“Let me see it.”
He read.
His face drained.
PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.9987%.
Adrian Moretti.
Elara stared at him.
Five years collapsed.
One night.
One mistake she had never told Julian about because they had not been together.
A night that had been unexpectedly tender.
Adrian had left before dawn after receiving an emergency call.
She had never seen him again.
Until the wedding.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“Your ring fit.”
“I knew your size because Marco checked photographs.”
“That sounds worse.”
“I know.”
“You knew Lily's name.”
“Because of Marianne.”
“You knew about me for years.”
“Not as the woman from that night.”
Elara searched his face.
He looked genuinely shattered.
Marianne said, “I didn't know until Richard tested her.”
“How did you find out?” Adrian asked.
“I intercepted one of his files.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Carlo's organization still existed. Because I didn't know whether you had become him.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“You kept my daughter from me.”
Marianne flinched.
“Yes.”
Elara stood.
“Don't.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You don't get to be angry before I do.”
His expression softened instantly.
“You're right.”
Elara paced.
Julian remained near the wall.
“So Lily is Adrian's daughter.”
“Yes,” Marianne said.
Elara laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
“This is insane.”
No one contradicted her.
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
Where Lily was.
Something changed in him.
Fear.
Wonder.
Grief.
He whispered, “Four years.”
Elara heard.
“You don't know her.”
“No.”
“You don't get to walk in and become her father because of a test.”
“I know.”
“She doesn't even know you.”
“I know.”
“She needs stability.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What do you want me to say?”
Elara's voice broke.
“I don't know.”
He stepped back.
“Then I won't say anything.”
That restraint hurt more than an argument would have.
Julian suddenly spoke.
“Elara.”
She looked at him.
His eyes were red.
“I owe you an apology that won't matter.”
“No. It won't.”
“I should have trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“I should have asked.”
“Yes.”
“I should have been there anyway.”
“Yes.”
Each answer cut him.
She didn't care.
But when he looked toward the stairs, she understood another loss.
He had believed Lily was his once.
For a brief time.
And somewhere underneath his cowardice, that mattered.
Julian said, “Richard destroyed all of us.”
Marianne shook her head.
“No.”
They looked at her.
“He manipulated you. He threatened you. But you chose what you did after that.”
Julian lowered his eyes.
Elara realized she was right.
Richard had created lies.
Julian had still chosen cruelty.
That distinction mattered.
Adrian turned to Marianne.
“Where is the vault?”
“Under the Plaza.”
“We know that.”
“No.”
Marianne shook her head.
“317 isn't the vault number.”
Adrian frowned.
“What is it?”
“A date.”
March 17.
Elara's birthday.
“The card opens an elevator beneath the hotel,” Marianne continued.
“The real vault is below the old ballroom foundation.”
“What is inside?”
“The original ledger. Sofia's recordings. Richard's accounts. Names.”
“Enough to destroy him?”
“Enough to destroy dozens of people.”
Adrian's phone rang.
Marco answered from the doorway.
His face changed.
“Boss.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Richard Wynn just called the police.”
“About what?”
“He reported Lily kidnapped.”
Elara stared.
“By who?”
Marco looked directly at Adrian.
“You.”
Within minutes, news alerts appeared.
MISSING CHILD.
ARMED SUSPECT.
ADRIAN MORETTI.
Richard had photographs.
Security footage from the wedding.
Adrian taking Elara outside.
Edited video.
Elara felt sick.
“He's making you the villain.”
Adrian nodded.
“And once police surround this house, Richard takes the vault.”
Marianne said, “We have to move now.”
Adrian looked at Elara.
“I can get you and Lily out through the east tunnel.”
“No.”
“Elara.”
“I am opening the vault.”
“No.”
“My mother hid it. My daughter opens it. Your blood opens it.”
“I won't put you there.”
“You don't decide.”
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
Closer.
Adrian looked toward the window.
Then at Elara.
She saw him calculate.
Every risk.
Every possible outcome.
Finally he nodded.
“We go together.”
They left through an underground garage three minutes before police reached the gates.
Marianne, Julian, Elara, and Adrian rode in one SUV.
Lily stayed at a separate safe house with Marco's wife.
Elara hated leaving her.
But for the first time, Lily's location was known only to four people.
Adrian drove beneath the city through private service tunnels.
They emerged three blocks from the Plaza.
The hotel was still recovering from the wedding.
Guests had mostly left.
Security corridors were quiet.
Marianne guided them through an employee passage.
They reached the basement.
A steel elevator stood behind an unmarked door.
Elara inserted the black card.
Nothing.
Then she entered 317.
The elevator opened.
They descended.
One level.
Two.
Three.
The doors opened onto an old stone corridor.
At the end stood a vault.
Elara touched the first scanner.
Red.
“Lily,” she whispered.
Marianne shook her head.
“No. Richard changed it.”
“Then how?”
Marianne reached into her pocket.
A transparent strip.
Lily's fingerprint.
Elara glared.
“I took it from her juice glass.”
The scanner turned green.
Adrian placed his hand on the second pad.
A needle pricked his finger.
Green.
The vault clicked.
Julian exhaled.
Adrian pulled the door.
Inside was a small room.
Shelves.
Documents.
Hard drives.
A recorder.
And one chair.
Someone was sitting in it.
Elara stopped.
The man slowly turned around.
May you like
Richard Wynn smiled.
“I wondered how long it would take my family to bring me the key.”
