Chapter 6 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Adrian stared at the photograph longer than anyone.
Harper had never seen him lose control.
Not when men tried to enter his VIP room.
Not when Mercer threatened Claire.
Not even when Leo’s safety was discussed.
But now his hand trembled.
“That’s Michael.”
Roman stepped closer.
“It could be old.”
Claire sent another message.
HE’S HERE.
ALIVE.
Adrian turned toward the door.
Roman blocked him.
“Think.”
“That’s my brother.”
“I know.”
“Move.”
“Mercer wants exactly this.”
Adrian stopped.
Harper understood Roman’s fear.
Everything about tonight had been designed to pull them in different directions.
Claire at the estate.
Ledger at the church.
Exchange at the pier.
Now Michael.
Too many emergencies.
Too many choices.
Someone wanted them scattered.
Harper grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.
“Claire found him. That means she can reach him.”
Adrian looked at her.
“We stick to the plan.”
“I don’t care about the plan.”
“Neither did I when Claire called me from your VIP room.”
That stopped him.
Harper lowered her voice.
“You told me blind trust gets people killed.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Trust Claire.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he nodded.
Roman exhaled.
A new call came through.
Claire.
Adrian answered this time.
“Michael.”
Claire whispered, “Alive.”
“How?”
“I don’t know everything yet. Mercer kept him in a private medical wing. He’s weak.”
“Can he walk?”
“Barely.”
“Get him out.”
“I’m trying.”
Harper moved closer.
“What about Nathan?”
“He’s gone.”
“Gone where?”
“He left twenty minutes ago.”
Harper looked at the clock.
Pier.
Nathan planned to meet them without Claire.
Claire continued.
“Mercer doesn’t know I’m in this wing yet.”
A distant alarm sounded.
Claire swore.
“He knows now.”
The call disconnected.
Adrian headed for the door.
This time Roman followed.
Harper did too.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“You’re going to Mercer’s estate?”
“Yes.”
“The exchange—”
“Was never real.”
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“What do we do with this?”
Harper thought quickly.
“Rachel.”
They transferred the ledger to Rachel’s federal contact.
Not physically.
Photographs.
Every page.
Multiple secure uploads.
If Mercer destroyed the original, the evidence would survive.
For the first time, leverage belonged to them.
Adrian drove personally.
Roman sat beside him.
Harper and Daniel rode in back.
The trip to the Marlowe estate took twenty-eight minutes.
Too long.
Claire sent no further messages.
Evelyn did.
EAST SERVICE GATE OPEN.
Rachel had managed to disable one security system.
When they arrived, smoke drifted from a detached garage.
Evelyn’s distraction.
No explosion.
No major fire.
Just enough confusion to draw security away.
They entered through the service gate.
Harper stayed close to Daniel.
Adrian moved with terrifying focus.
He knew the estate.
Michael had investigated Mercer here four years earlier.
That realization chilled Harper.
Adrian stopped outside a corridor.
“The medical wing.”
Roman checked the door.
Unlocked.
Inside smelled like antiseptic.
Three empty rooms.
Then they heard Claire.
“Easy.”
Harper ran.
Claire stood beside a wheelchair.
A thin man sat in it.
Gray touched his dark hair.
His face was pale.
But the resemblance to Adrian was undeniable.
Michael Vale.
Adrian stopped in the doorway.
Neither brother spoke.
Michael slowly raised his head.
“Adri?”
Adrian crossed the room.
He knelt in front of the wheelchair.
“You’re alive.”
Michael’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian embraced him carefully.
Roman looked away.
Claire saw Harper.
For half a second, neither sister moved.
Then Harper crossed the room and grabbed her.
“You are the worst sister in the world.”
Claire laughed and cried at the same time.
“I know.”
Harper hugged her harder.
“You hid a memory card in my bracelet.”
“I needed somewhere Nathan wouldn’t search.”
“He searched me.”
Claire’s face changed.
“Did he hurt you?”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“Mostly my patience.”
Claire smiled weakly.
Then she saw Daniel.
Her eyes widened.
“Dad.”
Daniel crossed the room and held both daughters.
For a moment, everything they had lost was contained inside one embrace.
Then Michael spoke.
“Mercer will come here.”
Adrian turned.
“What happened four years ago?”
Michael looked at him.
“I found evidence that Mercer was paying people inside our company.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Michael shook his head.
“You know part of it.”
He looked at Roman.
Adrian followed his gaze.
Roman froze.
Harper felt the room change.
Michael said, “The leak wasn’t one of our accountants.”
Adrian’s voice became cold.
“Michael.”
“It was someone close.”
Roman stepped backward.
“No.”
Michael stared at him.
“Your father.”
Roman’s face emptied.
“My father died ten years ago.”
“He worked for Mercer before that.”
Roman shook his head.
“I was eighteen when he died.”
“I know.”
Adrian stood.
“This has nothing to do with Roman.”
Michael nodded.
“I know. But Mercer believed Roman knew where his father kept records.”
Roman laughed bitterly.
“So that’s why you never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Harper almost smiled at the familiar phrase.
Roman did not.
“Everybody in this room needs to stop saying that.”
Even Adrian smiled faintly.
Then a slow clap came from the corridor.
Elliot Mercer stood in the doorway.
Elegant.
Gray-haired.
Completely calm.
Two men flanked him.
Nathan stood behind them.
Harper’s stomach turned.
Mercer looked around.
“What a touching reunion.”
Adrian moved in front of Michael.
Mercer smiled.
“You’ve spent four years believing I killed your brother.”
“You kept him prisoner.”
“I kept him useful.”
Michael whispered, “He needed my access codes.”
Mercer looked at Harper.
“And you.”
Harper held his gaze.
“You’re less impressive than I expected.”
Nathan almost smiled.
Mercer did not.
“I assume you brought the ledger.”
“No.”
“That would be unfortunate for Claire.”
Claire stepped beside Harper.
“You’re out of threats.”
Mercer raised an eyebrow.
“Am I?”
Nathan took out his phone.
A live video appeared.
Leo.
Sitting inside Adrian’s apartment.
Mrs. Alvarez unconscious on the floor behind him.
Adrian went pale.
Mercer smiled.
“I believe your nephew would disagree.”
Adrian moved.
Mercer’s men raised their weapons.
Harper grabbed Adrian.
“Wait.”
Mercer looked delighted.
“The famous Adrian Vale finally understands.”
Harper looked at the video.
Something bothered her.
Leo was afraid.
But he wasn’t looking at the camera.
His eyes kept moving toward the left.
Then Harper noticed the clock behind him.
10:22.
It was nearly 1:00 a.m.
The video wasn’t live.
Harper whispered, “It’s old.”
Mercer’s smile faded.
Adrian looked.
The clock.
Roman saw it too.
Nathan stared at his phone.
Mercer turned on him.
“You said it was live.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“I—”
Adrian smiled coldly.
“Leo left that apartment before midnight.”
Harper understood.
Adrian had moved him.
Of course he had.
Mercer’s leverage vanished.
Sirens sounded outside.
Rachel.
Federal agents.
Mercer looked toward the windows.
Claire smiled.
“I copied your entire server before I found Michael.”
For the first time, Mercer looked afraid.
Nathan stepped away from him.
“You said you controlled the police.”
Mercer ignored him.
“You fool.”
Nathan’s expression twisted.
“You dragged me into this.”
“I employed you.”
“You were going to sacrifice me.”
Mercer looked at him like an inconvenience.
“You were always replaceable.”
Nathan stared.
The word from the list.
EXPENDABLE.
Something broke in him.
He turned toward Harper.
“I tried to get you out.”
“You chased me.”
“I didn’t order them to hurt you.”
“You lied to Claire for eighteen months.”
Nathan looked at Claire.
For the first time, genuine shame crossed his face.
“I did love you.”
Claire’s answer was quiet.
“That’s what makes it worse.”
Mercer backed toward the hallway.
Adrian blocked him.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
Agents shouted from downstairs.
Mercer’s men hesitated.
One dropped his weapon.
Then the other.
Mercer looked around.
His empire had collapsed without drama.
No gunfight.
No heroic last stand.
Just evidence.
Witnesses.
And people who were finally done being afraid.
Federal agents entered the corridor.
Rachel came with them.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her expression was furious.
Harper had never been happier to see a stranger.
Mercer was placed in handcuffs.
Nathan too.
As an agent led Nathan away, he stopped beside Harper.
“I’m sorry.”
Harper looked at him.
“For which part?”
He had no answer.
They took him away.
Evelyn entered minutes later.
Harper and Claire both stared at their mother.
Evelyn began to cry.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Claire crossed her arms.
“Good.”
Harper looked at her mother.
“We’re alive.”
Evelyn nodded.
“That’s enough for tonight.”
The sisters hugged her.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But a beginning.
Michael was taken to a hospital.
Adrian rode with him.
Harper remained at the estate to give a statement.
Before leaving, Adrian stopped beside her.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
She looked at him.
“Your brother is alive.”
“Yes.”
“You found him.”
“Claire found him.”
Harper smiled.
“She does that.”
Adrian hesitated.
“Harper.”
“What?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For stopping me from doing something stupid.”
“You’ll have to be more specific.”
He almost laughed.
Then he left.
At sunrise, Harper stood outside the Marlowe estate with Claire and Daniel.
The sky turned pale over the trees.
Claire leaned against her.
“You hate me?”
“A little.”
“Fair.”
“You were going to marry Nathan just to investigate him?”
“Yes.”
“That might be the stupidest brave thing anyone has ever done.”
“Also fair.”
Daniel looked at them.
“I missed this.”
Harper turned toward him.
“You’re not disappearing again.”
“I won’t.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
Claire pointed at him.
“We have trust issues.”
“I noticed.”
Harper’s phone buzzed.
A notification.
Unknown email.
Subject:
YOU DIDN’T GET ALL OF MERCER’S FILES.
Harper’s smile vanished.
She opened it.
One attachment.
A photograph.
Mercer sitting at a restaurant six months earlier.
May you like
Across from him sat a woman Harper recognized.
Rachel Shaw.
