Chapter 3 - The Wedding That Was Never About Love

“Mom, where are you?”
Silence filled the line.
Harper stood so quickly the chair scraped across the floor.
“Mom?”
Evelyn’s breath trembled.
“I’m safe.”
Nathan spoke again in the background.
“Tell her.”
Harper’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Put Nathan on.”
A pause.
Then his voice became clear.
“Harper.”
“You lied to me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You sent men after me.”
“I sent people to bring you somewhere safe.”
“They grabbed me.”
“Things got out of control.”
“Where is Claire?”
Nathan did not answer.
Harper’s voice broke.
“Where is my sister?”
“Bring the bracelet.”
Harper looked at Adrian.
Nathan continued.
“You found the card, didn’t you?”
Adrian signaled for Roman to trace the call.
Harper forced herself to remain calm.
“What happens if I bring it?”
“You get Claire and your mother back.”
“Let me speak to Claire.”
“No.”
“Then I don’t believe you have her.”
Nathan laughed softly.
“That confidence doesn’t suit you.”
Harper felt Adrian move closer.
Not touching.
Just there.
Nathan said, “You always let Claire make the hard decisions. That’s why she never told you the truth.”
“What truth?”
“Ask Adrian Vale why your sister approached him.”
Harper looked at Adrian.
Nathan knew she was with him.
How?
“Ask him what Claire promised in exchange for his protection.”
Adrian’s expression did not change.
Harper stared at him.
Nathan continued.
“Then ask him why she chose you as insurance.”
The call ended.
Roman looked at his phone.
“Couldn’t trace it.”
Harper turned toward Adrian.
“What did Claire promise you?”
“Nothing.”
“Nathan said—”
“Nathan wants you to doubt everyone except him.”
“Did Claire ask you for protection?”
“For Leo. Not herself.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Harper repeated, “Did Claire ask you to protect me?”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“And you didn’t think telling me mattered?”
“She specifically asked me not to.”
Harper laughed without humor.
“So everyone gets to decide what I’m allowed to know.”
“That is exactly what Claire was trying to stop.”
“By lying to me?”
“By buying enough time to expose the people around her.”
Harper walked away from the table.
She needed air.
Space.
Anything that did not contain secrets.
The apartment suddenly felt crowded with them.
Her father.
Her mother.
Nathan.
Claire.
Adrian.
Every person Harper trusted seemed to have been holding one part of her life behind their backs.
She pressed both hands to the counter.
“Play Claire’s recording.”
Adrian nodded.
Roman resumed it.
Claire’s voice filled the kitchen.
“Dad didn’t abandon us.”
Harper shut her eyes.
“He discovered that Bennett Holdings was being used to wash money for Mercer’s network. Mom knew part of it, but I still don’t know how much. Dad copied records and planned to take them to federal investigators.”
Harper whispered, “No.”
“He disappeared three days later.”
The recording crackled.
“I spent years believing what Mom told us. Then, last year, I found one of Dad’s old storage keys hidden inside a box of tax files.”
Harper remembered Claire asking questions about their father.
She had thought it was wedding anxiety.
It wasn’t.
“I found documents tying Mercer to Dad’s disappearance. I also found payments to a young attorney named Nathan Cole.”
Harper opened her eyes.
Nathan had been in law school twenty-two years earlier.
Too young to be involved.
Claire continued.
“Not Nathan himself. His father.”
Harper exhaled.
“Richard Cole worked for Mercer. Nathan took over some of those relationships after Richard died.”
The recording went on.
“By the time I understood who Nathan was, we were already engaged.”
Harper’s stomach turned.
“I stayed because I needed access. I know you’ll hate me for that. Maybe you should.”
Harper whispered, “Never.”
Adrian looked away.
Claire’s voice trembled for the first time.
“Harper, if you’re hearing this, Nathan probably knows I betrayed him.”
The room became still.
“Do not trust Mom completely.”
Harper felt the words physically.
“Mom helped Mercer years ago. I don’t know whether she understood what he did to Dad. I wanted to believe she didn’t.”
The recording paused.
Then Claire said something quieter.
“I still want to.”
Harper wiped her eyes.
“That’s all?”
Roman checked.
“There are more recordings.”
Harper nodded.
“Play them.”
For the next hour, Claire dismantled the life Harper thought she knew.
Nathan had used Claire’s accounting credentials to move funds between shell companies.
Mercer had been preparing to transfer ownership of several businesses before an upcoming federal inquiry.
Claire copied everything.
The wedding was supposed to be her exit.
She planned to disappear afterward.
But something changed three weeks earlier.
Claire discovered Harper’s name on a corporate document.
Someone had forged Harper’s signature.
She was being positioned as the legal owner of one shell company.
If investigators closed in, Harper would become the fall person.
That was why Claire moved the evidence.
That was why she put the memory card inside the bracelet.
“She gave it to me six months ago,” Harper said.
“She may have been building the archive for a long time,” Roman replied.
Adrian studied the files.
“Or she anticipated needing a backup.”
A message appeared on Harper’s phone.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
A photograph loaded.
Claire sat in the same chair as before.
But now someone had placed a wedding veil over her head.
Harper’s stomach twisted.
Below it:
MIDNIGHT TOMORROW.
BRING THE CARD TO ST. MATTHEW’S.
COME WITHOUT VALE.
Roman muttered, “A church.”
Harper stared.
“Why St. Matthew’s?”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“What?”
“You know it.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
He hesitated.
“My brother was married there.”
Leo’s father.
Harper remembered the boy calling Adrian “Uncle.”
“Where is your brother?”
“Dead.”
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian gave a small nod.
Roman looked at him.
“Same church.”
Harper sensed something else.
“What happened?”
Adrian’s gaze stayed on the photograph of Claire.
“My brother Michael started questioning people who worked with Mercer.”
Harper’s heart sank.
“When?”
“Four years ago.”
“And he died?”
“Car accident.”
Harper understood immediately.
“You don’t believe it was an accident.”
“No.”
The network connecting their families tightened around her.
Claire had not chosen Adrian randomly.
She knew Mercer might have been responsible for Michael Vale’s death.
Claire had found someone with his own reason to destroy him.
“You and Claire were working together.”
Adrian shook his head.
“She gave me information. I verified some of it.”
“What did you plan to do?”
“Get Leo out of the city, turn the evidence over to an attorney I trust, and make sure Mercer couldn’t reach either of you.”
“Claire trusted your attorney?”
“She chose her.”
Harper stared.
“Who?”
Roman answered.
“Rachel Shaw. Former federal prosecutor.”
Adrian checked the time.
“We need to contact her.”
Roman’s expression darkened.
“I already tried.”
“And?”
“No answer.”
Adrian immediately pulled out his phone.
Nothing.
Roman grabbed his jacket.
“I’ll go.”
“I’m coming,” Harper said.
“No,” both men answered.
Harper glared.
“I’m done being hidden in rooms while everybody else decides what happens.”
Adrian studied her.
“You could be identified.”
“I’m already identified.”
He could not argue with that.
Twenty minutes later, Harper wore a dark coat borrowed from Mrs. Alvarez.
Her hair was tied back beneath a cap.
Adrian insisted on going with her.
Roman drove.
Rachel Shaw lived in a townhouse in Brooklyn Heights.
The front door was closed.
Lights were on upstairs.
Roman knocked.
No answer.
Again.
Harper noticed an envelope wedged beneath the door.
Her name was written across it.
HARPER BENNETT.
Adrian stopped her before she touched it.
Roman put on gloves.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph and a key.
The photograph showed Harper’s father.
Daniel Bennett.
Older than Harper remembered.
Much older.
Alive.
A date was printed in the bottom corner.
Eight months ago.
Harper nearly stopped breathing.
“That can’t be real.”
Adrian examined it.
“Where was it taken?”
Behind Daniel stood a row of storage units.
One had a number.
Harper’s eyes widened.
“The bracelet.”
Roman looked at the key.
A small metal tag read:
LOCKER 317.
Harper grabbed the photograph.
“My father is alive.”
“We don’t know that,” Adrian said gently.
“This was eight months ago.”
“Yes.”
“After twenty-two years?”
Adrian said nothing.
Harper turned the photo over.
Words were written on the back.
Claire’s handwriting.
HE NEVER LEFT US.
Harper’s knees weakened.
Adrian steadied her.
She didn’t pull away this time.
Roman looked toward Rachel’s house.
“Why would Rachel leave this outside?”
Adrian’s face changed.
“She wouldn’t.”
They tried the door.
Unlocked.
Inside, the townhouse was silent.
A lamp lay broken in the hallway.
No blood.
No Rachel.
Her laptop was gone.
Files had been removed from shelves.
Someone had searched the place quickly.
Roman found Rachel’s phone beneath the sofa.
Last outgoing call:
Claire Bennett.
Three days ago.
Then another message appeared on Harper’s phone.
This one came from Claire’s number.
ONE PHOTO.
A picture opened.
Rachel sat beside Claire.
Both women were alive.
Behind them stood Evelyn Bennett.
Harper’s mother.
No ropes.
No visible guards.
Evelyn was holding a gun.
Harper stared at the image until her vision blurred.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
COME TO 317 IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHICH ONE OF US BETRAYED YOU.
