Chapter 9 - The Choice Victor Never Expected

The woman was named Margaret Hale.

She was seventy-four years old.

And she lived in a retirement community two hours outside Chicago.

Khloe expected another conspiracy.

Instead, Margaret invited them inside and offered cookies.

Victor stared suspiciously at the plate.

Margaret laughed.

"Vittorio's son, definitely."

"You knew my father?"

"I helped him."

"How?"

"I was Adrian Vale's attorney."

Khloe stiffened.

"Was?"

"I resigned thirty years ago."

Margaret sat.

"Your mother convinced me."

She looked at Khloe.

"Sarah was extraordinary."

Khloe's throat tightened.

Margaret explained the final missing piece.

Sarah hadn't merely escaped Adrian.

She had spent years quietly dismantling his structure.

Vittorio helped her.

So did Elliot.

Eventually Richard.

Even Elena.

They weren't perfect people.

Some had participated before understanding what Adrian was building.

Some stayed silent too long.

But eventually they chose differently.

"Your father wanted you to find Margaret," Khloe told Victor.

Margaret shook her head.

"No. He wanted you to find what I kept."

She retrieved a sealed box.

Inside was Vittorio's final statement.

Not evidence.

A letter.

Victor read it alone.

Khloe waited outside.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then Victor emerged.

His eyes were red.

She didn't mention it.

"What did he say?"

Victor looked at the letter.

"He apologized."

"For what?"

"For leaving me an empire when he should have left me a choice."

Khloe understood.

Victor had spent his life believing duty and inheritance were the same thing.

They weren't.

"What are you going to do?"

He looked at her.

"I don't know."

"Good."

Victor frowned.

"Good?"

"For once, you don't already have the answer."

Margaret gave them the remaining documents.

Those records completed the government's case.

Adrian Vale eventually accepted a plea agreement that required full disclosure of the financial network and restitution from recoverable assets.

Khloe didn't attend the hearing.

She didn't need to see him.

He had occupied enough space in her life.

A year after the Beaumont gala, the Gold Room reopened under new ownership.

The Sarah Bennett Foundation held its first annual fundraiser there.

Khloe almost refused.

Then she decided reclaiming a place mattered.

She stood beneath the same chandelier.

Same marble floor.

Same mirrored pillars.

Everything looked familiar.

Everything felt different.

Javier approached in a tuxedo.

"You look nervous."

"I'm giving a speech."

"You faced Adrian Vale."

"He wasn't holding a microphone."

Javier smiled.

Their relationship had become easier.

Not simple.

But real.

"Victor here?"

"He said he'd be late."

Khloe pretended that didn't disappoint her.

She gave her speech.

No dramatic declarations.

She spoke about second chances.

About people who had lost businesses and homes because powerful institutions treated them like numbers.

About using recovered money to rebuild what had been taken.

When she finished, the room stood.

Khloe stepped down.

Victor still wasn't there.

Twenty minutes later, Javier found her.

"Khloe."

Something in his expression frightened her.

"What?"

"Victor left this."

An envelope.

Her name on it.

Khloe opened it.

One line.

MEET ME WHERE YOU FIRST LIED TO ME.

She stared.

"The ballroom?"

Javier shook his head.

"You didn't lie in the ballroom."

Khloe remembered.

The alley.

When Victor asked whether she knew who was following her.

She'd said no.

But she had recognized one of them.

Not his identity.

Only his face from Harlow & Pierce.

She'd been too terrified to admit it.

Khloe hurried through the kitchen.

She pushed open the service door.

The alley was empty.

"Victor?"

Nothing.

Then she saw something on the brick wall.

A photograph.

Their security-camera image from the night they met.

Khloe grabbing Victor's tuxedo.

Below it was another note.

YOU PICKED THE SCARIEST MAN IN THE ROOM.

Khloe laughed.

"Victor!"

His voice came from behind her.

"Your words."

She turned.

Victor stood beneath the service light.

No tuxedo.

Dark suit.

Nervous expression.

Khloe looked at him.

Then at the photograph.

"What are you doing?"

"Something I'm extremely bad at."

"That doesn't narrow it down."

He smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

"A year ago you grabbed me because you were afraid."

Khloe stepped closer.

"Victor—"

"You changed my life in approximately four seconds."

"Technically you kissed me."

"You ordered me to."

"Fair."

He took her hands.

"I spent most of my life believing protecting people meant controlling everything around them."

Khloe said nothing.

"You taught me that isn't protection."

His thumb moved across her hand.

"It's standing beside someone while they make their own choices."

Khloe's eyes filled.

Victor reached into his pocket.

Her breath caught.

But he didn't kneel.

Not yet.

Instead he held out a small black box.

"I know what I want."

He opened it.

A simple ring.

"But this part isn't my decision."

Khloe stared at him.

Victor's voice softened.

"Khloe Bennett, would you choose me?"

She started laughing and crying at the same time.

Victor looked worried.

"Is that bad?"

"No."

"You're crying."

"I'm aware."

"I prepared for several responses. This is difficult to classify."

Khloe laughed harder.

Then she wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Yes."

Victor froze.

"What?"

"Yes."

"You're sure?"

She pulled back.

"Victor."

"Yes?"

"Kiss me."

He smiled.

Then she added:

"They're watching us."

Victor looked toward the kitchen window.

Dozens of gala guests were pressed against the glass.

Javier stood among them.

Victor groaned.

Khloe laughed.

Then Javier's phone rang.

His smile disappeared.

He answered.

Listened.

And slowly looked at Victor.

"What?" Victor asked.

Javier lowered the phone.

"That was the federal prosecutor."

Khloe's stomach tightened.

"The final account was opened."

Victor waited.

Javier looked at the ring on Khloe's hand.

May you like

Then at them.

"They found something your father hid before he died."
