Chapter 4 - The Secret Beneath the Beaumont

Khloe stared at the screen.

"No."

Elena said nothing.

"My father was Daniel Bennett."

"That was the name your mother gave you."

"You're lying."

Khloe turned toward Victor.

"Tell me she's lying."

Victor couldn't.

The birth certificate appeared authentic, but authenticity could be manufactured.

"We verify it," he said.

Khloe laughed bitterly.

"Verify that my entire life is fake?"

"We verify the document."

Her eyes filled.

"I spent twenty-nine years believing my father died before I was born."

Elena stepped closer.

"Your mother was protecting you."

"From whom?"

Elena looked at the screen.

"From him."

The name in the father field was Adrian Vale.

Councilman Richard Vale's older brother.

A man who officially died twenty-nine years ago.

Victor remembered the name from stories his father rarely told.

Adrian Vale had been brilliant.

Private.

And dangerous in a way that didn't require violence.

He understood systems.

Banks.

Contracts.

People.

"The Architect," Victor said.

Elena nodded.

Khloe backed away.

"No."

Victor followed.

"Khloe."

"Don't."

She entered the kitchen.

Victor stopped at the doorway.

She gripped the counter.

"My mother worked two jobs. We lived in a one-bedroom apartment until I was twelve. If my father controlled millions, why?"

"Maybe he didn't know you existed."

"Or maybe none of this is true."

Victor nodded.

"That's possible."

She looked at him.

He didn't try to comfort her with certainty he didn't possess.

That mattered.

Behind them, Javier called Victor.

"There's another file."

Victor returned.

A video.

Timestamp: six days earlier.

Elliot appeared on-screen.

He looked exhausted.

"If you're watching this, Khloe, I'm sorry."

Khloe approached slowly.

"I should have told you earlier. I kept hoping I could prove I was wrong."

He held up a document.

"Adrian Vale did not die in 1997."

Khloe stopped breathing.

"He disappeared. Your mother helped him."

The video continued.

"Years later, she learned what he'd become. She left him and hid you."

Khloe whispered, "Mom."

Sarah Bennett had died four years earlier.

Elliot looked directly into the camera.

"Your mother gave me one instruction before she died. If the network ever found Khloe, I was to take her to Victor Rossi."

Victor frowned.

Why him?

Elliot answered as if he'd anticipated the question.

"Because Victor's father died trying to stop Adrian."

Silence filled the apartment.

Then Elliot said:

"Victor, if you're seeing this, Adrian is alive."

Victor's blood chilled.

"And he's coming back to Chicago."

The video ended.

Javier immediately started making calls.

Elena sat down.

Victor looked at Khloe.

She was crying silently.

Not dramatically.

Just tears she seemed annoyed by.

He offered her a handkerchief.

She stared at it.

"Do people actually carry these?"

"My father did."

Khloe took it.

"Thank you."

They spent the next hour examining files.

The ledger wasn't merely evidence of old crimes.

It showed current transactions.

Someone was buying properties around the Beaumont through shell companies.

Khloe recognized one.

"Harlow & Pierce."

Her employer.

Victor leaned closer.

The accounting firm wasn't investigating the network.

It belonged to it.

"Elliot worked inside their system," Khloe said.

"He was gathering evidence," Victor replied.

Javier found another pattern.

Every transaction converged on one date.

Tomorrow.

"What's tomorrow?" Khloe asked.

Victor knew.

"The Beaumont sale."

A private investment consortium was purchasing the hotel.

If the transaction closed, dozens of shell companies would collapse into one legal entity.

The old records would effectively disappear.

"The ledger becomes useless," Javier said.

"Not useless," Khloe corrected.

They looked at her.

"I'm an administrative assistant at a forensic accounting firm. I still listen when accountants talk."

She pointed at the screen.

"Closing creates records. Signatures. Verification. Beneficial ownership disclosures."

Victor understood.

"Tomorrow forces the Architect into the open."

Khloe nodded.

"Or someone signing for him."

Victor looked at the photograph.

The fifth man.

Adrian Vale.

Khloe's father.

"We go back to the Beaumont."

Javier objected.

"Absolutely not."

"He's right," Victor said.

Khloe looked at him.

"We don't know who's compromised."

"So?"

"So I go."

"No."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

Khloe stepped closer.

"The invitation was sent to me. The key was hidden in my purse. Elliot chose me."

"Which makes you bait."

"Maybe."

She met Victor's eyes.

"But bait only works when somebody thinks they can catch it."

Victor disliked how logical she was becoming.

Hours later, they returned through an underground service entrance.

Room 317 had changed.

Someone had searched it.

The desk was overturned.

Shelves ripped down.

Victor crouched beside the wall.

"Here."

A narrow groove.

Javier pushed against it.

Part of the wall moved.

Behind it was a second room.

Khloe entered first.

Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.

Old photographs.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Decades of secrets.

At the center sat a desk.

And on it was a fresh envelope.

KHLOE.

She reached for it.

Victor stopped her.

Javier checked it.

Clear.

Khloe opened it.

Inside was a photograph of her mother.

Sarah stood beside Adrian Vale.

She was pregnant.

On the back:

YOUR MOTHER STOLE SOMETHING FROM ME.

Khloe's hand shook.

Another line had been written beneath it.

NOW YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE IT BACK.

A phone began ringing somewhere inside the hidden room.

They followed the sound.

An old landline sat on a shelf.

Impossible.

Victor picked it up.

"Who is this?"

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

"Put my daughter on the phone."

Khloe went white.

Victor looked at her.

The voice continued.

"And Victor?"

May you like

A quiet laugh.

"Ask Elena who really killed your father."
