Chapter 8 - The Ledger Arthur Couldn’t Burn

Harper stared at the report.
“No.”
Dante read it again.
Thomas stepped closer.
“What?”
Harper turned the screen.
Thomas went pale.
The report indicated a biological relationship.
Not father and son.
Half brothers.
Dante looked at Thomas.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Evelyn sat down.
She knew something.
Harper saw it.
“Mom.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Salvatore and Thomas had the same father.”
Thomas stared at his wife.
“What?”
Evelyn had discovered it six years ago.
Their father, Dominic Lombardi, had maintained another relationship before his marriage.
Thomas’s mother had never revealed the truth.
That made Thomas a Lombardi by blood.
And Harper part of the same extended family.
Harper rubbed her temples.
“I miss when my biggest problem was quarterly tax estimates.”
Dante laughed despite himself.
Then the implications settled.
Vittorio was not biologically a Lombardi.
Thomas was.
The entire inheritance structure could be challenged.
“That’s why Vittorio hunted you,” Harper said.
Thomas nodded slowly.
“If this became public, he lost leverage.”
Dante looked at the evidence.
“He killed my father over a name.”
“No,” Harper said. “He killed him over control.”
They copied everything.
Harper insisted on three encrypted backups.
One went to Thomas’s federal contact.
One to an attorney.
One remained with Harper.
Dante watched her.
“You trust nobody.”
“I trusted my parents were dead. Look how that worked out.”
Evelyn deserved that.
She accepted it silently.
They left the vault before dawn.
Outside, federal agents waited.
Thomas raised his hands.
A woman stepped forward.
Special Agent Lena Cross.
Thomas relaxed.
“She’s ours.”
Cross looked at Harper.
“You’re Evelyn’s daughter.”
“So I’m told.”
Cross almost smiled.
They moved to a secure federal building.
For the first time, Harper believed the nightmare might end.
Then Cross told them the evidence had a problem.
“Chain of custody.”
Harper stared.
“You’re joking.”
“No.”
“The ledgers document murder.”
“They also came from a secret archive controlled by people with criminal connections.”
Dante’s expression hardened.
Cross continued.
“We need corroboration.”
“Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
“Vittorio.”
“Yes.”
“Arthur is dead.”
Cross nodded.
Harper thought.
Then remembered the gala.
Arthur had been talking with Senator Reese.
Why?
She searched Arthur’s calendar remotely.
A meeting invitation.
Reese.
Midnight.
Pier 17.
Arthur had planned to give Reese something.
Dante said, “Reese is compromised.”
“Maybe.”
Harper checked Arthur’s phone backup.
One unsent email.
CALVIN — IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, THE ORIGINAL LEDGER IS IN THE PLACE CAROLINE HATED.
Harper knew immediately.
Arthur’s country house.
His daughter Caroline had hated the basement because it flooded.
They drove there under federal protection.
The basement smelled of mildew.
Harper found a locked cabinet.
Inside was the original ledger.
Paper.
Signatures.
Bank stamps.
Vittorio’s handwriting.
Gabriel’s.
And one more name.
Special Agent Lena Cross.
Harper froze.
Dante saw it.
Neither spoke.
Upstairs, footsteps crossed the floor.
Cross called down.
“Find anything?”
Harper closed the ledger.
Dante quietly drew his weapon.
Harper whispered, “She’s in it.”
Dante nodded.
The basement door opened.
Cross appeared at the top of the stairs.
She was holding a gun.
“Give me the ledger.”
Thomas stepped between her and Harper.
“Lena.”
Cross looked almost sorry.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Evelyn gasped.
Cross aimed.
Then the lights went out.
A shot exploded through the darkness.
Harper heard someone fall.
Emergency lights flickered red.
She looked down.
May you like
Blood covered Dante’s shirt.
And he collapsed at her feet.
