Chapter 6 - The Name Behind the Trust

Dante pulled Harper behind the kitchen island.
Marco fired twice.
The front door slammed.
A body fell outside.
Harper crawled toward Thomas.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
“Dad.”
“I’m fine.”
“You were shot.”
“Occupational disagreement.”
Even wounded, apparently Thomas Hayes remained irritating.
Evelyn pressed a towel against the injury.
Marco checked the attacker.
“Dead.”
Dante crouched beside him.
“Who?”
Marco turned the man’s wrist.
A Lombardi security insignia was tattooed beneath his sleeve.
Dante recognized him.
“Enzo.”
“One of yours?” Harper asked.
“For eleven years.”
The betrayal kept widening.
Harper looked at Thomas.
“Now explain the money.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“The payments were operational funds.”
“Eight million dollars?”
“Informants. safe houses. surveillance.”
“Why route them through your personal identity?”
“Because Vittorio believed I was corrupt.”
Harper understood.
“You pretended he bought you.”
“For nineteen years.”
Evelyn added, “Thomas became the person Vittorio trusted most outside the family.”
Harper stared at her father.
“You could have told me.”
“No.”
“One phone call.”
“And if Vittorio monitored you?”
“One letter.”
“And if he intercepted it?”
Harper had no answer.
Thomas looked at her.
“I chose your anger over your funeral.”
That silenced her.
Dante moved toward the laptop.
“Elaine Pendleton’s trust.”
Thomas nodded.
“Not Elaine’s.”
Harper frowned.
“The documents name her.”
“Because Arthur changed them.”
“Who owns it?”
Thomas looked at Harper.
“You do.”
The room became silent.
Harper laughed.
Nobody joined her.
“No.”
Evelyn sat beside her.
“When Salvatore realized Vittorio had penetrated his businesses, he needed somewhere to place evidence and protected assets.”
“Why me?”
“You were a child. Unconnected. Invisible.”
Dante understood.
“My father trusted Evelyn.”
Thomas nodded.
“The trust wasn’t designed to enrich Harper. It was designed as a legal dead drop.”
Harper stared at the financial records.
“Twelve million dollars wasn’t being stolen into my trust.”
“No.”
“It was being collected there.”
“Yes.”
“Evidence?”
“And money Vittorio couldn’t explain.”
Dante leaned forward.
“Where is the evidence?”
Thomas looked at Harper.
“Locked behind her identity.”
Harper felt suddenly tired.
“Of course it is.”
The trust required three factors.
Harper’s biometric identification.
A physical key.
And a phrase Salvatore had entrusted to Evelyn.
Evelyn knew the phrase.
Thomas knew where the key had been hidden.
Harper possessed the identity.
Three people deliberately separated.
“If Vittorio gets all three,” Thomas said, “he can destroy everything.”
Dante asked, “Where’s the key?”
Thomas looked toward Harper.
“Your childhood home.”
Harper’s stomach tightened.
The small house in Queens had remained empty since Evelyn’s supposed death.
They went after dark.
Harper entered first.
Nothing had changed.
Her mother’s old ceramic bowl remained by the door.
Her father’s photograph still stood on the bookshelf.
Two dead people smiling from a house they had both abandoned.
Thomas led them upstairs.
Harper’s childhood bedroom.
He pulled a floorboard beneath the window.
A metal box rested underneath.
Inside was a brass key.
And a photograph.
Harper picked it up.
Salvatore Lombardi stood beside Evelyn.
Between them was a little girl.
Harper.
Dante stared.
“How old were you?”
“Five.”
“I don’t remember this.”
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“You weren’t supposed to.”
On the back, Salvatore had written:
FOR THE GIRL WHO MUST NEVER OWE A LOMBARDI ANYTHING.
Dante read it.
A sad smile crossed his face.
“That sounds like my father.”
Harper handed him the photograph.
“You knew him better.”
“Sometimes I wonder.”
A floorboard creaked downstairs.
Marco raised his weapon.
Dante motioned everyone silent.
Another creak.
Then a voice.
“Evelyn?”
Her mother went white.
Harper whispered, “Who is that?”
Evelyn didn’t answer.
The man downstairs spoke again.
“I know you found the key.”
Thomas reached for his gun.
Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that’s Vittorio.”
Dante’s expression became ice.
Footsteps climbed the stairs.
Slow.
Unhurried.
Vittorio Lombardi reached the landing.
He smiled at Dante.
“My boy.”
Dante raised his gun.
Vittorio looked past him at Harper.
“There she is.”
Harper tightened her hand around the brass key.
Vittorio’s smile widened.
“The woman who owns my empire.”

Then another bedroom door opened behind Harper.
And Gabriel Russo stepped out holding Evelyn at gunpoint.
