Chapter 5 - The Woman in Room 317

“Mom?”

Chloe stepped toward the darkness.

Vincent caught her wrist.

Not hard.

Just enough.

“Wait.”

A flashlight flickered at the far end of the corridor.

A woman stood there.

Older than the photograph Chloe carried in her memory.

But alive.

“Chloe.”

The voice broke on her name.

Chloe pulled free.

“Mom?”

Maria began crying.

Chloe ran.

Seventeen years disappeared in ten steps.

Maria caught her daughter in both arms.

Chloe had imagined this moment thousands of times.

She had imagined screaming.

Demanding answers.

Refusing forgiveness.

Instead she buried her face against her mother’s shoulder and sobbed like the eleven-year-old girl who had waited beside a telephone that never rang.

“I’m sorry,” Maria whispered.

Chloe pulled away.

“You were alive.”

“Yes.”

“You were alive.”

“I had to disappear.”

“For seventeen years?”

Maria looked past her.

At Vincent.

Fear entered her face.

Vincent saw it.

“So,” he said. “October seventeenth.”

Maria closed her eyes.

“Vincent.”

“What happened?”

“You deserve the truth.”

“Then give it to me.”

Maria led them into an old records room.

She explained everything.

Carlo Moretti had discovered a conspiracy inside his own organization.

Someone had arranged the vehicle explosion intended for Vincent.

Carlo believed a rival family was responsible.

Maria knew otherwise.

The order had come from inside Moretti House.

From Salvatore.

Vincent went silent.

“Why?”

“Because Salvatore believed you would destroy the organization.”

“I was seventeen.”

“He was planning decades ahead.”

Maria had saved Vincent by keeping him at the hospital.

Then she found proof linking Salvatore to the bomb.

Carlo promised protection.

Instead, someone tried to kill Maria.

She fled.

“Why leave Chloe?”

Vincent asked.

Maria looked at her daughter.

“Because they didn’t know she mattered.”

Chloe recoiled.

“I mattered to you.”

“More than anything.”

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

“Because Salvatore watched you.”

Chloe’s face crumpled.

“All those years?”

“Yes.”

Maria reached for her.

Chloe stepped away.

Love remained.

So did seventeen years of abandonment.

Both could exist at once.

Derek sat against the wall.

“You haven’t told her the worst part.”

Maria turned.

“Be quiet.”

Chloe looked at Derek.

“What?”

He smiled bitterly.

“Ask her who hired me.”

Chloe already knew the answer.

“Salvatore.”

Derek shook his head.

“No.”

Maria went pale.

Derek looked directly at Chloe.

“Your mother did.”

Silence.

Chloe stared at Maria.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Maria couldn’t.

Chloe felt something inside her crack.

“You sent him?”

“At first.”

Derek laughed.

“She paid me to watch you.”

Maria’s voice shook.

“To protect you.”

“Everyone keeps using that word.”

“I never told him to hurt you.”

“But you put him in my life!”

“I hired him to watch from a distance. He approached you himself.”

Derek’s expression hardened.

“Because Salvatore offered more.”

Chloe looked between them.

“You worked for both?”

“Yes.”

Derek had started as Maria’s observer.

Then Salvatore discovered him.

Money changed hands.

Instructions changed.

Derek was ordered to get close.

To find Maria’s evidence.

To find the key.

“What about us?” Chloe whispered.

Derek looked away.

That hurt more than if he had laughed.

“At first, it was a job.”

“At first?”

He met her eyes.

“I did love you.”

Vincent stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Derek looked at him.

“What?”

“Don’t turn what you did into love.”

The room went silent.

Derek lowered his eyes.

Chloe realized she had been waiting years for someone to say that.

Maria opened an old cabinet.

Inside was a metal case.

She removed a ledger.

“The evidence.”

Vincent took it.

Names filled the pages.

Police.

Politicians.

Businessmen.

Then he found one name that stopped him.

Marco Bellini.

Vincent slowly raised his eyes.

May you like

Marco stood by the door.

His gun was already pointed at Vincent.
