Chapter 7 - Chloe’s Last Secret

Chloe could hear her own heartbeat.
“What do you mean?”
Tommy exhaled.
“Victor knew Elena would eventually contact Adrian if you appeared.”
“You sent those men after me.”
“I told them to scare you toward the alley.”
Adrian's expression turned dangerous.
Chloe lifted one hand.
She wanted to hear this.
“The car?” she asked.
“Victor knew Adrian was at the club.”
“And you knew I'd climb inside?”
“No. We only needed you near him.”
“You terrified me.”
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
No excuse.
Somehow that made it worse.
“You made me think I was running for my life.”
“I know.”
Chloe's voice shook.
“You don't know anything.”
She ended the call.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
Then she laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was breaking something.
“Even my escape was arranged.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“They pushed you toward the alley. They didn't make you open my car door.”
“Does that distinction matter?”
“It matters to me.”
“Why?”
“Because they don't get credit for the choice you made.”
Chloe stared.
Those words stayed with her.
They didn't get credit for the choice.
Tommy had manipulated circumstances.
Victor had manipulated people.
Elena had hidden truths.
But Chloe had run.
Chloe had opened the door.
Chloe had survived.
That belonged to her.
Investigators moved quickly after Daniel surrendered the ledger.
Victor disappeared.
Tommy's attorney contacted authorities.
He offered cooperation.
Chloe didn't care whether guilt or self-preservation motivated him.
She cared about evidence.
She also cared about one final question.
Her mother.
Daniel searched the ledger.
Margaret Mercer's name appeared only twice.
One unauthorized account.
One reversal.
No payment connected to her death.
Elena's old files showed the same.
Maybe the accident had been exactly that.
An accident.
Not every tragedy needed a hidden villain.
That truth hurt differently.
Chloe had almost preferred someone to blame.
Three days passed.
She stayed at a secure hotel arranged through victim services, not Adrian.
That choice mattered.
Adrian respected it.
He called once each evening.
Never more.
On the fourth day, Chloe met Elena.
Alone.
“You wanted to see me?” Elena asked.
Chloe placed a small box on the table.
Inside was Bruno's brass nameplate.
Elena began crying.
“I thought you'd want it.”
“Thank you.”
Chloe sat.
“I haven't forgiven you.”
“I know.”
“I don't know if I ever will.”
“I understand.”
“But my mother trusted you enough to give you a chance.”
Elena looked down.
“She was kinder than I deserved.”
“Maybe.”
Chloe paused.
“But she also expected you to do something with that chance.”
Elena nodded.
“I will.”
She had agreed to testify.
Against Victor.
Against Tommy if necessary.
Against herself.
For the first time, Chloe believed Elena might actually be trying to repair something rather than hide it.
When Chloe left the café, Adrian waited across the street.
He hadn't come inside.
“Were you watching me?”
“Elena asked me for a ride.”
“Convenient.”
“She took a cab.”
Chloe almost smiled.
“You're bad at this.”
“At what?”
“Pretending you weren't waiting.”
“I was waiting.”
The honesty surprised her again.
They walked.
“You're leaving the hotel tomorrow?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“My own apartment.”
“You found one?”
“Temporary rental.”
“Good.”
No offer to move into his house.
No argument.
No attempt to take over.
Chloe appreciated that more than she wanted to admit.
“Adrian?”
“Yes?”
“Why did you really lock the car?”
He looked embarrassed.
“I thought you were about to jump out while it was moving.”
“That simple?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were kidnapping me.”
“I realized that approximately five seconds too late.”
She laughed.
A real laugh.
It felt strange.
Adrian smiled.
Then his phone rang.
Daniel.
Adrian answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Chloe's smile vanished.
“What happened?”
Adrian put the phone on speaker.
Daniel's voice came quickly.
“Victor surfaced.”
“Where?”
“At the Rossi office.”
Adrian stopped walking.
“Why?”
“He isn't running anymore.”
“What does he want?”
“You.”
Adrian frowned.
Daniel continued.
“He walked into the lobby ten minutes ago and asked to speak to you.”
“Police?”
“On their way.”
“Keep him there.”
“Adrian, there's something else.”
“What?”
“He brought a file.”
Chloe's stomach tightened.
“What file?”
Daniel answered.
“It's labeled CHLOE MERCER.”
Adrian looked at her.
May you like
Then Daniel added:
“And according to Victor, Chloe is the only person allowed to open it.”
