Chapter 4 - Someone Inside the House

Tommy looked almost exactly as Chloe remembered him from happier photographs.
That was the worst part.
Clean coat.
Neat hair.
Calm smile.
He could have been arriving for dinner.
“Chloe.”
Adrian stepped between them.
Tommy raised both hands.
“Relax.”
“You followed us,” Chloe said.
“I followed my property.”
Adrian's voice went cold.
“She isn't property.”
Tommy smiled.
“I meant the key.”
Chloe held the flash drive behind her.
Tommy saw the movement.
“There it is.”
“What is this?”
“Something that doesn't belong to you.”
“My mother's photograph was hidden with it.”
Tommy's smile disappeared.
“You found that?”
“Yes.”
For the first time, fear crossed his face.
Chloe saw it.
And suddenly she understood something important.
Tommy was afraid.
Not of Adrian.
Of the drive.
“What did my mother know?”
Tommy glanced toward the hallway.
“We shouldn't discuss this here.”
“Why?”
“Because Rossi isn't who you think.”
Adrian didn't react.
Tommy continued.
“Ask him why his family spent three years looking for Elena without filing half of what they knew with police.”
Chloe looked at Adrian.
“Is that true?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Elena asked me not to trust anyone connected to Vale Development.”
Tommy laughed.
“Convenient.”
Chloe looked between them.
Two men.
Two versions.
She was done letting men choose reality for her.
She pulled out her phone.
“What are you doing?” Tommy asked.
“Recording.”
His face tightened.
“Chloe.”
“Talk.”
Tommy stepped closer.
Adrian moved.
Chloe raised her hand.
“No. Both of you stay where you are.”
They did.
“Tommy, why did you date me?”
His silence answered first.
“Tell me.”
“I loved you.”
“Why did you approach me?”
“I saw you.”
“Where?”
He hesitated.
“Coffee shop.”
“Before that.”
Nothing.
Chloe's throat tightened.
“You knew my mother.”
“No.”
“You knew about her.”
Tommy looked toward the flash drive.
That was enough.
Chloe backed toward the door.
Tommy moved suddenly.
Not toward Chloe.
Toward the drive.
Adrian blocked him.
The confrontation lasted seconds.
No punches.
No dramatic fight.
Just Adrian standing between Tommy and Chloe.
Tommy stopped.
“Move.”
“No.”
Tommy's eyes hardened.
“You have no idea what you're protecting.”
Adrian replied, “Neither do you.”
Chloe slipped into the hallway.
“I'm leaving.”
Tommy called after her.
“If you open that drive, you'll regret it.”
She turned.
“That sentence used to work on me.”
Tommy stared.
“It doesn't anymore.”
She and Adrian left.
They went directly to an attorney Adrian trusted.
Not his house.
Not his office.
A neutral location.
The flash drive was copied before anyone opened it.
The attorney insisted on documenting every step.
Chloe appreciated that.
The first folders contained financial records.
Hundreds.
Then audio files.
One was labeled MARGARET.
Chloe clicked.
Her mother's voice filled the room.
Chloe hadn't heard it in fourteen years.
She covered her mouth.
“If you're hearing this, then I failed to fix this quietly.”
Chloe cried without sound.
Margaret described accounts.
False property purchases.
Money moved through tenants who didn't know their names were being used.
Then she said:
“My daughter knows nothing. Keep her out of this.”
Chloe closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
A second voice appeared.
Young.
Elena.
“I'll keep the copies.”
Margaret answered, “And if something happens to me, you walk away.”
Elena said, “I can't promise that.”
The recording ended.
Adrian looked shattered.
Another file.
Recorded years later.
Elena's voice.
“Tommy Vale found Chloe.”
Chloe's hands trembled.
“He thinks Margaret gave her the missing ledger. Chloe doesn't know. I'm sure of it.”
Another pause.
“If Tommy gets close to her, I need to warn her.”
The recording stopped abruptly.
Chloe looked at Adrian.
“That's why Elena asked about him.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“She disappeared first.”
They opened the final folder.
One document.
A scanned contract.
Tommy's signature appeared at the bottom.
The contract authorized payments to several shell companies.
But another signature appeared beside his.
Chloe leaned closer.
“Who is Victor Hale?”
Adrian's face changed.
“My business partner.”
Chloe stared at him.
“What?”
“He's been with me twelve years.”
“Your partner was working with Tommy?”
“I didn't know.”
Adrian called Daniel.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then Chloe remembered the photograph of Adrian's open front door.
Someone had gotten inside.
Someone who knew the house.
Victor.
Adrian stood.
“We need to contact investigators now.”
Chloe nodded.
No more hiding.
They provided copies of everything to the attorney, who arranged contact with law enforcement.
By sunrise, Chloe had given a preliminary statement.
For the first time in months, she felt as though she had moved one inch toward daylight.
Then Adrian received a call.
He listened.
His face drained.
“What happened?” Chloe asked.
He lowered the phone.
“Daniel's missing.”
Chloe stood.
“And Victor?”
“No one can find him.”
The attorney's assistant entered.
“Ms. Mercer?”
“Yes?”
“A package was delivered downstairs for you.”
“From who?”
“No name.”
Adrian immediately said, “Don't touch it.”
The assistant placed it on the far end of the table.
Police were notified.
The package was inspected.
No dangerous contents.
Inside was a single photograph.
Elena.
Alive.
The timestamp printed beneath it was from yesterday.
Chloe stared.
Adrian couldn't speak.
Then they turned the photograph over.
A message had been written on the back.
ADRIAN, YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND ME.
Below that was an address.
And a time.
May you like
Tonight.
11:00.
