SHADOWS OF ROSDALE DRIVE / Chapter 3 / 3

Chapter 3 - The Triumph of Rosdale

"Step away from the crib, Eleanor," Clara said, pressing her back against the wooden frame, hiding the ledger behind her back. "If you take one more step, I will throw this entire file out the window into the storm."

Eleanor laughed softly, tapping her silver cane on the hardwood floor. "And destroy the only evidence that proves Leo is my late husband’s bastard son? I don't think so, Clara. You need that book to save your unborn daughter's birthright. Without it, Victoria and her little brat will take everything, and you'll be thrown into the streets with nothing."

"You knew all along," Clara realized, her eyes widening. "You knew Victoria was carrying Richard’s child eight years ago! You hid them away so Richard wouldn't split the family fortune!"

"Of course I knew!" Eleanor snarled, her cold demeanor cracking with deep-seated hatred. "My husband was a weak, cheating fool! I spent forty years building the Vance fortune from the ground up while he squandered it on women like Victoria. I wasn't about to let a bastard child inherit half of my life's work! But now? Victoria thinks she can blackmail me. She thinks she can use that boy to take control of Vance Enterprises."

Eleanor motioned to her guards. "Get the ledger."

The two men stepped forward. Clara’s heart pounded violently. She felt a sudden, sharp contraction across her abdomen—a surge of intense pain that nearly brought her to her knees. She gasped, holding her baby bump.

"Going into labor, Clara?" Eleanor sneered, taking a step closer. "How tragic. The stress must be too much for you."

Just as the guard reached out to grab Clara, a loud crash echoed from the main foyer downstairs, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps rushing up the grand staircase.

"Police! Nobody move!"

A squad of five uniformed police officers burst into the nursery, guns drawn, led by Detective Miller—a man Clara had discreetly sent her live-stream location to before leaving the hospital. Behind them stood Dr. Harrison, holding an official emergency court injunction.

"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, and corporate fraud," Detective Miller announced, stepping between Clara and the guards.

Eleanor froze, her face turning pale. "What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who I am?!"

"We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "We have the wiretap audio provided by your daughter-in-law, as well as the mechanical report from your son's vehicle. The brake lines were cut with professional tools matched to your estate mechanic."

"No... this is a mistake! Arthur! Call my lawyers!" Eleanor screamed as the officers grabbed her arms and forced them behind her back.

At that moment, Victoria Sterling walked past the officers into the room, holding young Leo by the hand, a look of utter horror on her face as she saw Eleanor being handcuffed.

"It's over, Victoria," Clara said through gritted teeth, struggling through another intense contraction. She held up the leather ledger for the detective to see. "The DNA records and birth trust in this ledger prove that Leo is Richard Vance's son, not Julian's. Your paternity claim against my husband is completely fraudulent."

Victoria’s jaw dropped. She looked down at the boy, then back at Clara, realizing her entire scheme had collapsed in seconds. "Clara... please... I was just trying to secure a future for my boy..."

"You used a child as a weapon," Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "Get out of my house."

Detective Miller signaled to another officer. "Escort Mrs. Sterling and the child downstairs for questioning regarding fraud and extortion."

As Eleanor and Victoria were led away in handcuffs, Clara collapsed against the side of the crib, a sharp gasp escaping her lips. "Doctor... the baby... it's time!"

Dr. Harrison rushed forward, holding her shoulders. "Hang in there, Clara! The ambulance is outside!"

Three Weeks Later.

The afternoon sun streamed warmly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Rosdale Manor, illuminating the quiet, peaceful nursery.

Julian sat in a plush armchair by the window, a light surgical bandage still wrapped around his temple, but his eyes were bright, clear, and full of life. In his arms, he held a tiny baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket.

Clara walked into the room carrying two cups of warm tea, a tired but triumphant smile on her face. She sat down on the arm of Julian’s chair, leaning her head gently against his shoulder.

"She has your eyes, Julian," Clara whispered softly, reaching down to touch the baby's tiny fingers.

Julian looked up at Clara, tears glistening in his eyes. "She has your strength, Clara. You saved my life... you saved our family... you saved everything."

Following the arrest of Eleanor and Victoria, the board of Vance Enterprises had unanimously voted Julian as the sole CEO and Chairman. Eleanor was currently awaiting trial without bail, while Victoria was facing federal charges for attempt to defraud an estate. Young Leo had been placed in the care of a loving, non-corrupt distant relative, funded by a modest, honest education trust that Julian had personally set up for his half-brother.

"What should we name her?" Julian asked softly, looking down at his daughter.

Clara looked around the bright, quiet room—a nursery that was no longer a place of secrets and fear, but a place of hope and new beginnings.

"Hope," Clara said, her voice full of warmth and absolute certainty. "Her name is Hope Vance."

Julian smiled, kissing Clara gently on the lips before pressing his forehead against hers. The dark shadows of Rosdale Drive had finally cleared, leaving behind a bright, unbroken future.
