Chapter 2 - The Heir Apparent

"Who are you?" Clara asked, holding her bump instinctively as she retreated a step back toward the ICU door.
"My name is Victoria Sterling," the woman replied, stepping forward under the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway. The young boy by her side, holding the leather journal, looked up at Clara with an unsettling, calm gaze. "And this is Leo. Julian’s firstborn son. The real heir to the Vance legacy."
The hallway suddenly felt icy cold. Clara’s mind raced. Julian had never mentioned another child, nor had he ever spoken of a Victoria. But looking at the young boy, the resemblance was undeniable—the sharp jawline, the distinct bright blue eyes, even the slight dimple on his left cheek.
"Julian doesn't have a son," Clara said firmly, keeping her composure. "If he did, Eleanor would have used him against me years ago."
Victoria laughed—a dry, bitter sound. "Eleanor doesn't know. Julian paid me off eight years ago to keep Leo a secret. He didn't want his monstrous mother getting her claws into his child. But now that Julian is lying in a coma and Eleanor is unraveling, the rules have changed. Leo is eight years old, Clara. He has a legally binding paternity trust signed by Julian himself."
Leo stepped forward, holding out the leather journal. His voice was soft, far too mature for a child his age. "My dad promised me he would leave Rosdale Manor to me when I turned ten. He wrote it right here."
Clara looked at the boy, feeling a sudden surge of empathy mixed with acute danger. This child was being used as a pawn, just like Julian had been, just like her own unborn baby was about to be.
Before Clara could answer, Arthur Pendelton—Eleanor’s lead attorney—hurried back down the hallway, having clearly been summoned by Victoria.
"Ah, Mrs. Sterling, you made it," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses with a slick, victorious smile. "Mrs. Clara Vance, as you can see, your claim to the exclusive guardianship of the estate is now legally contested. Leo Vance is the primary direct blood heir. Under the original 1998 Vance Trust charter, an existing male heir takes full priority over an unborn child in matters of corporate control and estate management during an emergency incapacity."
"This is a setup," Clara said, looking between Victoria and Arthur. "You worked with Eleanor to sabotage Julian's car, didn't you? You brought this child here to stage a coup!"
"Careful with your accusations, Clara," Victoria sneered. "I came here to protect my son's rights. You’re just a pregnant waitress who got a ring on her finger. You think you can handle the vultures in the Vance boardroom? You won't last a week."
Suddenly, the red lights above the ICU door began to flash. The doors burst open, and a team of doctors pushed a gurney out, rushing Julian toward the surgical elevator.
"His intracranial pressure is spiking!" Dr. Harrison shouted. "We need to get him into emergency decompressive surgery right now!"
Clara rushed forward. "Julian!"
She grabbed his pale, cold hand. His eyes fluttered open slightly, filled with confusion and pain. His lips moved weakly. Clara leaned down close to his face.
"Clara..." Julian whispered, his breath shallow. "The... the ledger... in the nursery... don't trust... Victoria..."
Before he could say another word, the doctors pushed Clara back and rolled Julian into the elevator, the heavy steel doors slamming shut between them.
Clara stood frozen. The ledger in the nursery.
She turned back toward Victoria and Arthur. Victoria was watching her closely, her eyes narrowed in suspicion. "What did he say to you?" Victoria demanded, taking a step toward her.
"He said he loves me," Clara lied smoothly, staring Victoria straight in the eye. "And he said you’re running out of time."
Clara didn't wait for a response. She turned on her heel and walked briskly toward the exit, her heart hammering against her ribs. She needed to get back to Rosdale Manor before Eleanor’s team or Victoria got there.
Thirty minutes later, Clara arrived at the grand, imposing gates of Rosdale Manor. Rain was beginning to pour, slicking the stone drive. She hurried inside, taking the massive winding staircase up to the third floor where she had been preparing the baby nursery for the past six months.
The nursery was painted a soft pastel green, filled with plush toys and a hand-carved wooden crib that Julian had built himself. Clara went straight to the crib, running her fingers along the bottom frame. She felt a small, secret latch hidden underneath the wood plank. She pulled it.
A false bottom popped open, revealing a thick, dark leather book—the true Vance Ledger.
Clara opened it with trembling hands. Page after page was filled with records, offshore bank accounts, and legal documents. But as she flipped to the center section, her breath caught in her throat.
There was a birth certificate for Leo Sterling—but Julian’s name wasn't listed under the father’s line.
It was signed by someone else entirely: Richard Vance—Julian’s late father.
Leo wasn't Julian’s son. He was Julian’s half-brother.
Suddenly, the soft sound of applause rang out from the doorway of the nursery.

Clara spun around. Standing in the doorway was Eleanor Vance, dripping wet from the rain, holding a silver walking cane, flanked by two heavily armed security guards.
"Brilliant, Clara," Eleanor said, stepping into the room with a cold, terrifying smile. "You always were smarter than Julian gave you credit for. But you're too late. Hand over the ledger."
