Chapter 6 - The Night the Mansion Turned Against Him

Dominic reached the entrance hall and found the mansion filling with smoke.
Not enough for a major fire.
Enough for confusion.
Exactly what someone wanted.
“Where is Lily?”
Arthur appeared from the kitchen corridor.
“I thought she was with Mrs. Russo.”
“Elena is with me.”
“I meant Evelyn.”
Dominic’s blood went cold.
The front gates were locked.
Security cameras were down.
Smoke alarms screamed through every room.
Victor had been restrained in the chapel.
Anna was receiving medical attention.
Evelyn had disappeared with Lily and the hard drive.
Dominic looked at Elena.
“I’ll find her.”
Elena’s expression was different now.
Not pleading.
Not frightened.
“If anything happens to my daughter—”
“Nothing will.”
“You don’t get to promise that anymore.”
She walked away.
Dominic deserved the words.
Luca ran toward the basement control panel.
Dominic followed.
They found the security room burning.
A small targeted fire.
Servers.
Backup equipment.
Video storage.
Nothing else.
“This was intentional.”
“No kidding.”
“Sir.”
Dominic looked at Luca.
“What?”
“The fire suppression system was manually disabled.”
“By who?”
“Evelyn had access through the old service system.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
Victor’s claim returned.
Evelyn built the archive.
Was that possible?
Maybe.
A forensic accountant.
Inside the family for years.
Trusted by his father.
Anna’s guide.
Michael’s contact.
She had touched every part of the story.
Dominic’s phone buzzed.
Text message.
A photo of Lily sleeping beneath a blanket.
Below it:
She is safe. Bring Victor to St. Gabriel’s. Alone.
Dominic recognized the name.
St. Gabriel’s was an abandoned Catholic school outside the city.
His father had donated money there for years.
“Victor is bait,” Luca said.
“Yes.”
“You’re not taking him.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Dominic.”
“She has Lily.”
“And possibly the archive.”
“Exactly.”
Victor laughed when Dominic told him.
“You finally understand.”
“Understand what?”
“Evelyn never wanted justice.”
“What did she want?”
“Control.”
Dominic stared.
Victor continued.
“Your father created files. Evelyn created the indexing system. She knew how to connect every payment, every favor, every secret.”
“Why?”
“At first? To help him.”
“And later?”
“To own him.”
Dominic did not believe Victor.
Not fully.
But he believed enough to be careful.
They drove to St. Gabriel’s.
Victor sat in the rear seat, wrists bound.
“You know she’ll kill me.”
Dominic looked out the window.
“That would solve several problems.”
Victor smiled.
“There you are.”
“What?”
“The man your father raised.”
Dominic looked at him.
“No. The man my father failed to raise.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
At the school, Dominic entered alone with Victor.
The old gymnasium lights were on.
Lily sat on the stage.
Evelyn stood beside her.
The child was eating crackers from a small plastic bag.
She waved.
“Mr. Dominic!”
Dominic almost collapsed from relief.
“Hi, Lily.”
“Grandma says everybody is mad.”
“That’s accurate.”
Evelyn looked tired.
Not dangerous.
Not victorious.
Just tired.
“Let her come to me.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Go.”
Lily jumped from the stage.
She ran directly to Dominic.
He lifted her.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Mama is mad at you.”
“I know.”
“She’s mad at Grandma too.”
“I know.”
“She’s mad a lot today.”
“I know.”
Lily leaned back.
“Did you say sorry yet?”
Dominic almost laughed.
“Not properly.”
“You should.”
“You’re right.”
He placed her behind him.
“Go sit by the door.”
She obeyed.
Dominic faced Evelyn.
“Why take her?”
“I needed you to come.”
“You could have called.”
“You might not have believed me.”
“You’re starting to sound like everyone else in my family.”
Evelyn looked at Victor.
“Give him to me.”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“Told you.”
Dominic ignored him.
“What is on the hard drive?”
“Evidence.”
“Against Victor?”
“Against all of them.”
“All of who?”
“The network.”
Victor laughed.
“She means everyone.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Politicians who buried murders. Agents who sold investigations. Executives who laundered money. Judges who traded sentences.”
“And my father?”
“Yes.”
“And you?”
Silence.
Dominic looked at her.
“You’re on it.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“I built the accounting structure.”
Victor smiled.
“She wasn’t an innocent maid.”
“I never said I was.”
Evelyn continued.
“At first I believed your father when he said information would protect the family. Then I watched it destroy everyone around him.”
“So you helped Anna expose it.”
“Yes.”
“And Michael?”
“Yes.”
“Why take the drive?”
“Because handing it to one agency would be useless. Too many people were compromised.”
“What was your plan?”
“To release encrypted copies simultaneously to multiple federal offices, journalists, attorneys, and independent watchdog organizations.”
Dominic looked at Victor.
“That’s why you’re afraid.”
Victor’s face hardened.
Evelyn nodded.
“He can’t stop all of them.”
Dominic asked, “Then why do you need Victor here?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Because one file is encrypted separately.”
“What file?”
“Michael’s murder.”
Elena’s husband.
Lily’s father.
“The password is something only Victor knows.”
Victor laughed.
“You think I’m giving it to you?”
Evelyn raised a small recorder.
“You already did.”
Victor stopped laughing.
“When?”
“At the warehouse.”
Dominic understood.
Every conversation.
Every confession.
She had recorded him.
Evelyn inserted the password.
The hard drive unlocked.
A video file appeared.
MICHAEL.
She played it.
Victor was shown in a garage.
Michael stood across from him.
“You’re my father.”
Victor said, “Then act like my son.”
“I’m leaving.”
“You don’t leave.”
“I have Elena.”
“You have obligations.”
“I have a daughter.”
Victor froze on the recording.
“What?”
Michael realized his mistake.
Victor stepped closer.
“A daughter?”
Michael backed away.
The recording ended.
Another file followed.
A vehicle repair record.
Brake line tampering.
Payment authorized through one of Victor’s accounts.
Elena would finally know.
Michael had not abandoned her.
He had died trying to leave.
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“Release it.”
Victor lunged.
Despite his bound wrists, he hit Dominic from the side.
The laptop fell.
Victor ran toward Lily.
Dominic tackled him before he reached her.
They crashed onto the gym floor.
Victor grabbed a broken metal chair leg.
Dominic blocked the strike.
Lily screamed.
Evelyn pulled her away.
Dominic hit Victor once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Victor stared up at him.
“Do it.”
Dominic’s fist remained raised.
“Do what?”
“Become your father.”
Dominic slowly lowered his hand.
“No.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Victor’s face changed.
Evelyn had already sent the evidence.
Police entered.
Federal agents followed.
This time Dominic did not run from them.
He stood.
He gave them Victor.
He gave them the drive.
He gave them the archive.
Then he called Elena.
“I have Lily.”
Elena began crying.
“She’s safe?”
“Yes.”
“Put her on.”
Lily took the phone.
“Mama!”
Dominic walked away while they spoke.
Evelyn joined him.
“You did the right thing.”
“I’m not finished.”
“With what?”
Dominic looked at Lily.
“The apology.”
Two days later, Victor was charged.
Then more arrests followed.
Sebastian cooperated.
Anna survived surgery.
Evelyn agreed to testify.
Dominic opened his own records voluntarily, knowing he might lose businesses, money, and power.
He accepted it.
Then Elena asked to see him.
They met in the entrance hall.
Same place where Lily had confronted him.
Elena held the forged dismissal notice.
“I kept this.”
“I noticed.”
“You know what bothers me most?”
“What?”
“You really didn’t know.”
Dominic nodded.
“No.”
“You had all this power.”
“Yes.”
“And people used your name to hurt others.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“So what happens now?”
Dominic took the document.
He tore it in half.
Then again.
“Now I learn what my name is attached to.”
Elena almost smiled.
“Good answer.”
From the staircase came Lily’s voice.
“But you forgot!”
Dominic turned.
She ran down the steps.
“What did I forget?”
Lily stopped before him.
Hands on hips.
Exactly as before.
“The sorry.”
Dominic looked at Elena.
Then he lowered himself to one knee.
But before he could speak, Arthur entered from the front doors.
His face was pale.
“Sir.”
Dominic stood.
“What?”
“There’s someone outside.”
“Who?”
Arthur handed him a sealed envelope.
No return address.
Dominic opened it.
Inside was a photograph taken that morning.
It showed Lily leaving the mansion with Elena.
A red circle had been drawn around the child.
On the back were four words.
Victor was never alone.
Dominic looked toward the open front doors.
A black sedan was parked across the street.
Its rear door opened.
Someone stepped out.
Anna whispered from behind him:
“I know that man.”
May you like
Then Dominic saw his face.
And everything changed.
