Chapter 2 – The Locker She Never Wanted Opened

My Wife Handed Me Divorce Papers While She Was In Labor... I Signed Them... Then The Doctor Whispered, "She Just Saved Your Life."
Chapter 2 – The Locker She Never Wanted Opened
The operating room doors slammed shut.
The red SURGERY IN PROGRESS light turned on.
I stood frozen.
The divorce papers were still in my hands.
Unsigned.
The silver key Emily had slipped into my palm felt strangely warm.
Then...
The man in the dark suit walked toward me.
He wasn't smiling.
"Mr. Carter?"
I nodded.
He looked at the papers.
"You haven't signed yet."
My heart pounded.
"Who are you?"
"I'm not allowed to answer that."
"Not until your wife comes out of surgery."
He walked away.
Didn't threaten me.
Didn't explain.
Just... waited.
That was somehow even more terrifying.
Twenty minutes later...
The doctor stepped into the hallway.
"The baby's alive."
I couldn't breathe.
"And Emily?"
The doctor hesitated.
"She's stable."
"For now."
I nearly collapsed with relief.
Then he looked at the unsigned papers in my hands.
His expression changed.
"You still haven't signed?"
"No."
He closed the door behind him.
Lowered his voice.
"You should've listened to your wife."
"What do you mean?"
He looked around to make sure no one else was listening.
Then he said quietly,
"She wasn't trying to leave you."
"She was trying to keep you alive."
Before I could ask another question...
He walked back into the ICU.
Nothing made sense.
Alive from what?
Emily had never lied to me.
Not once in eleven years.
If she wanted a divorce...
There had to be a reason.
But not this reason.
Not like this.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Silence.
Then an older woman's voice.
"You have the key."
I froze.
"Who is this?"
"Emily trusted you."
"Please don't let anyone open Locker 214."
The call disconnected.
Locker 214.
The same locker Emily had whispered about.
I looked toward the maternity wing.
Halfway down the corridor...
I saw the man in the dark suit talking to hospital security.
Then...
Both of them looked at me.
I made a decision.
Instead of waiting...
I walked toward the employee lockers.
Locker 214 sat alone at the end of the hallway.
My hands shook as I inserted the silver key.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside...
There wasn't money.
There wasn't jewelry.
There wasn't a passport.
Only a baby memory box.
A tiny pink blanket.
Our daughter's first ultrasound.
A stuffed rabbit.
And one sealed envelope.
Across the front...
Emily had written:
If you're reading this...
I'm still alive.
Which means you ignored me.
I felt sick.
Inside was only one page.
Daniel...
Close the locker.
Walk away.
If anyone sees what's underneath...
you'll never be safe again.
Underneath?
I slowly lifted the memory box.
My stomach dropped.
Hidden beneath it...
Was a thick stack of medical files.
Every page stamped in bright red.
CONFIDENTIAL
On top...
A DNA report.
Patient Name:
Emily Carter
Below that...
Another name.
Mine.
I frowned.
Why would our DNA be tested together?
I flipped to the last page.
One sentence had been circled.
Immediate family members should never be considered compatible donors.
My heart stopped.
Immediate family?
Emily wasn't my sister.
This had to be a mistake.
Then I noticed something else.
Someone had written across the margin in blue ink.
He still doesn't know the truth.
Footsteps echoed behind me.
I turned.
The man in the dark suit stood at the end of the hallway.
This time...
He wasn't alone.
Two hospital security officers were with him.
He looked directly at me.
Then calmly said,
"Mr. Carter..."
"Please step away from the locker."
No anger.
No panic.
Just certainty.
As if...
He already knew exactly what I'd found.
I slowly folded the DNA report into my jacket.
Before I could close the locker...
Something slid from behind the medical files.
A small voice recorder.
Its battery light blinked once.
Automatically.
A recording began to play.
Emily's voice filled the empty hallway.
Soft.
Weak.
Terrified.
"Daniel... if you're hearing this...
May you like
they found the locker before I could tell you everything..."
The three men started running toward me.
