CHAPTER 1 The Divorce Papers in the Delivery Room

The Divorce Papers in the Delivery Room

(2-second Hook)

"Thirty seconds before our daughter was born...

my wife begged me to divorce her.

I thought she had stopped loving me.

I had no idea... she was trying to save my life."

People think the worst words you can hear in a delivery room are...

"We're losing the baby."

They're wrong.

Sometimes...

the worst words are much quieter.

My name is Daniel Carter.

And the last thing my wife asked me before giving birth...

was to sign our divorce papers.

Emily and I had been married for eleven years.

We weren't perfect.

We argued over money.

Over work.

Over whose turn it was to pick up groceries.

But never...

not once...

had either of us mentioned divorce.

Until that night.

She was already in labor when the nurse handed me a large brown envelope.

"I think your wife wants you to have this."

I smiled.

"I'll open it later."

The nurse didn't smile back.

"I think you should read it now."

Something in her voice made my stomach tighten.

Inside...

was a legal divorce agreement.

Already signed by Emily.

Every page.

Every signature.

Every date.

Only one line remained blank.

Mine.

I rushed to her bedside.

"What is this?"

She looked exhausted.

Sweat covered her forehead.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

She didn't answer.

She simply whispered...

"Please... sign it before the baby comes."

I thought the pain medication was making her confused.

I laughed.

"We'll talk about this tomorrow."

She grabbed my wrist.

Hard.

Hard enough to stop me walking away.

Her voice broke.

"There isn't going to be a tomorrow like you think."

The monitor suddenly beeped faster.

Doctors hurried into the room.

The nurse gently pulled me aside.

"You need to stay calm."

Calm?

My wife had just asked for a divorce while giving birth.

Nothing about this felt calm.

A contraction hit.

Emily cried out.

Then looked straight into my eyes.

"Daniel...

if you ever loved me...

sign it."

I couldn't understand.

Had she fallen in love with someone else?

Was this guilt?

Fear?

Had our marriage been over for months without me noticing?

Every terrible possibility raced through my mind.

Then something strange happened.

A man in a dark suit appeared outside the delivery room.

He wasn't family.

He wasn't hospital staff.

He spoke quietly to the charge nurse.

She looked toward Emily's room...

Then immediately looked away.

When I asked who he was...

No one answered.

Minutes later...

Another woman arrived.

Also wearing a suit.

She carried a briefcase.

She didn't knock.

She walked directly into Emily's room.

Emily nodded as if she had been expecting her.

The woman placed another envelope on the bed...

Then left without saying a word.

I opened it.

Inside...

was a handwritten letter.

Not from Emily.

From her attorney.

Only one sentence was highlighted.

"If Daniel signs before the child is born...

he cannot legally inherit Emily's medical debt."

I frowned.

Medical debt?

Emily had good insurance.

We both did.

None of this made sense.

Before I could ask another question...

The doctor rushed in.

"We need to move now."

"The baby's heart rate is dropping."

Everything exploded into motion.

Nurses.

Machines.

Alarms.

The bed rolled toward the operating room.

Emily reached for my hand one last time.

She slipped a small silver key into my palm.

No explanation.

Just six whispered words.

"Don't let them open my locker."

The operating room doors slammed shut.

I stood alone in the hallway...

Holding divorce papers in one hand...

A tiny silver key in the other...

Wondering who "they" were...

And why my wife believed divorcing me...

Was the only way to keep me alive.

Then I looked up...

The man in the dark suit was staring directly at me.

He slowly pointed at the unsigned divorce papers...

Then checked his watch.

May you like

As if...

He was waiting for me to make a decision.
