Chapter 2 - The Name Julian Feared

The man at the ballroom doors lifted the envelope and said:

“Claire Bennett, you deserve to know what Adrian Mercer did.”

Ethan moved before I could.

“Get him out of here.”

The stranger didn’t flinch.

Julian did.

That was what scared me.

Not Ethan’s anger.

Not Sabrina’s sudden silence.

Julian.

The man beside me had negotiated hostile acquisitions, faced lawsuits worth hundreds of millions, and once sat through a charity auction while a drunk senator insulted him for fifteen straight minutes without losing his composure.

But at the sound of Adrian’s name, his jaw locked.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The stranger stepped forward.

He looked to be in his early forties, lean, neatly dressed, gray beginning at his temples. Not wealthy enough to blend naturally into this room, but too controlled to look intimidated by it.

“Daniel Hart.”

Ethan swore under his breath.

I turned toward him.

“You know him.”

“No.”

Daniel laughed once.

“That was fast.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Security.”

Julian finally spoke.

“No one touches him.”

The nearest event staff froze.

Ethan looked at Julian.

“This is a private gala.”

Julian’s expression turned cold.

“No. It’s a foundation event partially funded by my trust.”

Sabrina glanced at him sharply.

That detail clearly mattered to her.

Julian continued.

“And until I know why this man is holding something addressed to Claire, he stays.”

Daniel inclined his head.

“Thank you.”

“I didn’t do it for you.”

“I know.”

I stared at the envelope.

“Give it to me.”

Daniel’s eyes met mine.

“Not here.”

I almost laughed.

Apparently everyone had decided that tonight.

“Why does everyone keep telling me that?”

“Because this room is full of people who benefit from you not knowing the truth.”

My fingers tightened around the first photograph.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Claire, don’t listen to him.”

That sentence alone was enough to make me want to listen.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is Adrian?”

For the first time, he hesitated.

Then he looked directly at Ethan.

“Ask your ex-husband.”

I turned.

Ethan’s face had gone hard.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Hard.

“You know.”

He stared at me.

“Claire.”

“You know who Adrian is.”

“It’s complicated.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Of course it is.”

Sabrina whispered, “Ethan?”

He ignored her.

I watched that register on her face.

There was history here.

History she didn’t know.

The realization seemed to disturb her almost as much as it disturbed me.

I held up the photograph from my envelope.

“Who is the woman?”

Ethan looked at the image and went pale again.

Daniel answered.

“Her name was Olivia Hart.”

The surname stopped me.

I looked back at him.

“Your wife?”

“My sister.”

The room disappeared around me for a moment.

Not literally.

The music still played somewhere.

Glasses still clinked.

People still whispered.

But suddenly all I could see was Daniel’s face.

“She knew Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Daniel looked toward Julian.

That glance was small.

But Julian saw it.

So did I.

“Why are you looking at him?”

Daniel drew a breath.

“Because this started before your divorce.”

My heart began beating faster.

Ethan cut in.

“Enough.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“You’ve had seven years to decide when enough was enough.”

Seven years.

My marriage had lasted seven years.

I felt the coincidence like a pressure against my ribs.

“What happened seven years ago?”

No one answered.

I looked from Ethan to Julian.

Then to Sabrina.

Sabrina shook her head immediately.

“Don’t look at me. I don’t know anything about this.”

For once, I believed her.

Daniel extended the envelope again.

“This contains copies. Not originals.”

“Copies of what?”

“Bank records.”

Ethan lunged forward.

Julian stepped between us so quickly that two nearby guests gasped.

He didn’t touch Ethan.

He didn’t have to.

Julian was taller by several inches, and in that moment he seemed even larger.

“Back up.”

Ethan glared at him.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

Daniel spoke from behind Julian.

“That’s not true.”

Julian turned slowly.

Daniel continued.

“It has everything to do with him.”

I felt a chill.

“Why?”

Daniel’s gaze dropped to my stomach.

Then rose again.

“Because Adrian worked for Duval Meridian.”

Julian went completely still.

I looked at him.

“You knew that.”

“Yes.”

The answer came too quickly.

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“I didn’t know Adrian was connected to Ethan.”

“Who was he?”

Julian’s eyes stayed on Daniel.

“A financial compliance director.”

“For you?”

“For one of our subsidiaries.”

“And what happened to him?”

This time Julian hesitated.

Daniel answered.

“He disappeared.”

Sabrina covered her mouth.

Ethan muttered, “This is insane.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why are you afraid?”

“I’m not afraid.”

“You should be.”

Ethan took another step.

Julian blocked him again.

The tension around us had become impossible to hide.

The gala host approached from the stage with two staff members.

“Mr. Duval? Is everything all right?”

Julian didn’t look away from Ethan.

“Delay the presentation.”

The woman blinked.

“Sir?”

“Ten minutes.”

Sabrina finally stepped forward.

“You can’t delay it.”

Julian turned toward her.

“Why not?”

Her hand moved to the crown.

“It’s the recognition ceremony.”

Julian’s eyes dropped to it.

Again.

“What number is inside the band?”

Sabrina stared.

“I told you, I don’t know.”

“Take it off.”

Her face flushed.

“I’m not taking off my crown in front of everyone.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You may want to.”

She whipped toward him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not pity.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“Because that crown was never supposed to be yours.”

The nearest guests stopped pretending not to listen.

Sabrina looked at Julian.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Julian held out his hand.

“Let me see it.”

“No.”

“Sabrina.”

“No.”

Her voice rose.

Ethan grabbed her wrist gently.

“Just give it to him.”

She stared at him.

“You’re siding with them?”

“I’m trying to end this.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“No. You’ve been trying to end this for years.”

Ethan spun toward him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Daniel lifted the envelope.

“I know about Mercer Advisory.”

My ex-husband’s face changed.

That name meant something.

I had heard it before.

Ethan’s private consulting company.

The one he started three years into our marriage.

The company he claimed barely broke even.

The company he later blamed for our financial problems.

I looked at Daniel.

“What about it?”

“Olivia found transfers.”

“What transfers?”

Daniel glanced at Ethan.

“Money moving through shell vendors tied to charity sponsorships.”

Sabrina’s hand lowered slowly from her crown.

“What charity sponsorships?”

No one answered her.

She looked at Julian.

Then at me.

Then at Ethan.

“Ethan.”

He avoided her eyes.

Her face went white.

I knew that feeling.

I had lived inside it.

The moment you realized the person beside you had already started abandoning you, and you were simply the last person to know.

Daniel continued.

“Olivia traced several payments from a Duval subsidiary into Mercer-controlled accounts.”

Julian’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel met his gaze.

“That’s what she thought.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

Julian’s expression sharpened.

“What subsidiary?”

“Northgate Philanthropic Services.”

Julian stopped breathing for half a second.

I noticed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Northgate was dissolved six years ago.”

“Why?”

“Internal irregularities.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

A knot formed in my stomach.

“Were you involved?”

Julian’s gaze snapped to mine.

“No.”

The force of the answer surprised me.

“Then why do you look like that?”

“Because Adrian was the one who reported Northgate.”

Daniel nodded again.

“And then he vanished.”

Silence.

Real silence this time.

Even Ethan stopped moving.

Julian turned toward Daniel.

“When?”

“Three days before the internal review.”

I looked at Ethan.

He was sweating.

Barely.

But I knew him.

Ethan never sweated under pressure.

Not during court mediation.

Not during arguments.

Not even when I found the hotel receipt.

But he was sweating now.

“Ethan.”

He looked at me.

“Did you know Adrian?”

“No.”

Daniel said, “Yes.”

Ethan snapped.

“Shut up.”

“Did you know Olivia?”

“No.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You slept with her.”

Sabrina made a small sound.

I stared at Ethan.

The ballroom tilted.

“What?”

“That’s not true.”

Daniel reached inside his jacket.

Ethan moved again.

Julian grabbed his arm this time.

Not violently.

Firmly.

Enough.

Daniel pulled out a second photograph.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

Ethan.

Younger.

Same face.

Same smile.

Same hotel from the photograph in my first envelope.

Olivia beside him.

His hand on her waist.

Her mouth against his cheek.

I looked at the date.

Two months after our wedding.

My lungs stopped working.

“No.”

The word came out before I realized I had spoken.

Ethan stepped toward me.

“Claire.”

I backed away.

Julian’s hand found my elbow.

“Don’t.”

Ethan froze.

I looked at the photograph again.

Seven years of memories rearranged themselves in seconds.

The business trips.

The late meetings.

The locked phone.

The unexplained cash withdrawals.

The way he always accused me of being suspicious when I asked questions.

Sabrina whispered, “You cheated on her seven years ago?”

Ethan said nothing.

She stepped back from him.

He looked at her.

“Sabrina, this isn’t what it looks like.”

She laughed.

A broken, disbelieving sound.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Daniel said, “Olivia ended it.”

Ethan’s gaze turned murderous.

Daniel continued anyway.

“She discovered what Mercer Advisory was doing.”

I looked at him.

“What happened to her?”

Daniel’s eyes changed.

She was his sister.

Whatever answer came next had lived inside him for years.

“She died.”

My stomach clenched.

“How?”

“Car accident.”

Ethan looked away.

Daniel saw it.

“So did the police.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

“Olivia called me the night before she died.”

He swallowed.

“She said she had proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“She never told me over the phone.”

Daniel looked at the envelope in his hand.

“She said if anything happened to her, I should find Adrian.”

Julian frowned.

“But Adrian vanished before she died.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s what everyone was told.”

Julian’s face changed.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Adrian didn’t disappear.”

The words seemed to crack through the room.

“He was hidden.”

“By whom?”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Then at Julian.

“I don’t know.”

I almost shouted.

“Then what do you know?”

Daniel held up the envelope.

“I know Adrian contacted me six weeks ago.”

Julian stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“He’s alive.”

Ethan whispered something.

I turned.

“What did you say?”

He shook his head.

“Nothing.”

“You said something.”

Daniel watched him.

“Say it louder.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel took one step toward him.

“You said, ‘He promised.’”

My blood went cold.

I looked at Ethan.

“Who promised?”

He said nothing.

“Ethan.”

His jaw clenched.

Sabrina suddenly tore the crown from her head.

“Fine.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She thrust it at Julian.

“Here. Check it.”

Julian took the crown.

He rotated it beneath the ballroom light.

His eyes narrowed.

“There’s no serial number.”

Sabrina went pale.

“What does that mean?”

“It means this isn’t the crown my foundation issued.”

“That’s impossible.”

Julian ran a thumb along the inner band.

Then stopped.

Something had been scratched into the metal.

I leaned closer.

Three small characters.

A.

M.

My breath caught.

I pulled out my invitation.

The handwritten number beneath my name.

Daniel saw it.

His face drained.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was on my invitation.”

“No.”

He grabbed his own envelope and opened it.

Inside was a folded sheet.

He unfolded it.

At the top, printed in black ink, were the same letters.

AM-17.

Julian looked between the crown and the document.

“What is AM-17?”

Daniel’s hands began to shake.

“I thought it was an account code.”

Ethan stepped backward.

Just one step.

But all of us saw it.

Daniel turned on him.

“You know what it is.”

“No.”

“You do.”

“I don’t.”

Daniel moved toward him.

“Then why did Olivia write it down the night she died?”

Ethan’s face collapsed.

For one second.

Then recovered.

Too late.

I saw it.

Julian saw it.

Sabrina saw it.

I whispered, “What did you do?”

Ethan looked at me.

And for the first time, there was no charm left.

No polished husband.

No wounded ex.

Just fear.

“Claire, we need to leave.”

“We?”

“Yes.”

A laugh escaped me.

“You think I’m going anywhere with you?”

His eyes moved to my stomach.

“Then you need to leave with Julian.”

Julian stepped closer.

“Why?”

Ethan looked around the ballroom.

People.

Cameras.

Staff.

Security.

His voice dropped.

“Because if Adrian contacted Daniel, someone knows Claire is here.”

Daniel went still.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I can’t explain.”

Julian grabbed his lapel.

“You’re going to.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You think this is about stolen charity money?”

“What is it about?”

Ethan’s face twisted.

“You have no idea what Northgate was.”

Julian’s grip tightened.

“Tell me.”

Before Ethan could answer, every light in the ballroom went out.

Someone screamed.

The chandeliers died.

The stage vanished.

For two seconds, there was complete darkness.

Julian pulled me against him.

“Claire, stay close.”

Phones lit up across the room.

Emergency lighting flickered red along the walls.

Then the ballroom doors slammed shut.

Daniel cursed.

Security shouted.

Sabrina screamed Ethan’s name.

And somewhere in the darkness, a phone began ringing.

Mine.

I pulled it from my purse.

UNKNOWN CALLER.

Julian looked at the screen.

“Don’t answer.”

The ringing stopped.

A message appeared.

One photograph.

I opened it.

It showed me standing inside the ballroom.

Taken less than a minute ago.

My stomach visible.

Julian beside me.

Beneath the image were five words.

YOU BROUGHT HIS CHILD HERE.

My hand went numb.

Julian read it.

His face changed.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“Why does it say his?”

Before Julian could answer, another message arrived.

A video attachment.

The thumbnail showed Ethan.

Seven years younger.

May you like

Standing beside Adrian.

And behind them was Julian.
