Chapter 3 - THE DOMINOES FALL

The silence in the restaurant was deafening. The wealthy patrons who had watched Emma get doused in ice water minutes earlier were now staring at Adrian with open disgust and ridicule. The man near the window with the iPhone was still recording, capturing every second of Adrian’s collapse.

Vanessa’s face turned pale. She turned to Adrian, clutching his arm in panic. “Adrian! What is she talking about? Tell me this is a joke! You said you owned the penthouse! You said I was getting the townhouse in Soho!”

Adrian pushed her arm away roughly. “Shut up, Vanessa!”

“Don’t yell at me!” Vanessa shrieked, her composed facade completely crumbling. “You told me she was just a useless housewife who lived off your money!”

“Miss Cole,” Emma interrupted, her tone polite yet icy. “I suggest you check your personal banking apps immediately.”

Vanessa frantically pulled her iPhone from her designer purse. Her thumb trembled violently as she opened her mobile banking application. A moment later, a sharp scream escaped her throat.

“My accounts… they’re frozen! All of them!”

“They aren't just frozen,” Mr. Sterling from the SEC stepped forward, handing Vanessa a formal summons. “They have been seized under federal asset forfeiture laws. The funds deposited into your private accounts over the past fourteen months came directly from Carter Meridian’s stolen operational revenues. You are named as a co-conspirator in a federal grand jury indictment for money laundering and wire fraud.”

Vanessa dropped her phone onto the table. It cracked against the marble plate. Tears of pure terror welled in her eyes as she looked at Adrian. “You told me those were bonuses! You said it was legal!”

“You took the money, didn't you?” Adrian spat at her, his composure entirely gone. “You demanded the clothes, the trips, the cars! You bled me dry!”

“You offered it to me to keep me in your bed!” Vanessa screamed back, slapping Adrian hard across the cheek.

The slap echoed through the room. The diners gasped, and several people broke out into quiet applause at the sheer drama unfolding before them.

Adrian sat frozen, his cheek bright red, as two federal officers stepped forward with handcuffs.

“Adrian Carter,” Officer Sterling announced, pulling Adrian’s arms behind his back. “You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy.”

“Wait!” Adrian yelled as the cold steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He looked up at Emma, his eyes wide with desperate panic. “Emma, please! Think about Lily! You can’t let her father go to prison! We can work this out! I was confused, I was manipulated by Vanessa!”

Vanessa gasped in outrage. “You lying coward!”

Emma looked down at Adrian, her expression unreadable. “When I came in here tonight, Adrian, I gave you one final chance. I called you eleven times today. I was going to tell you that Lily’s fever had finally broken, and that if you showed a single shred of humanity, mercy, or love for your family, I would have settled this quietly out of court.”

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat.

“But you didn't ask about your daughter,” Emma said softly. “You threw ice water in her face. You tried to ruin us out of sheer arrogance.”

Emma picked up her wet coat, wrapped it securely around Lily, and turned toward the manager.

“Julian,” Emma said. “Please have the valet pull my car around.”

“Right away, Mrs. Carter,” Julian replied with a respectful bow.

As the police officers led a sobbing Vanessa and a shouting Adrian toward the exit in front of flashing phone cameras, Emma walked calmly past them, her head held high.
