Chapter 2 - THE MASTERMIND

“Sit down, Adrian,” Emma said quietly. Her voice lacked all anger; it carried only the cold weight of absolute authority.
Vanessa glared at Emma, her voice rising in pitch. “Who do you think you are, ordering him around? Adrian is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carter Meridian Group! He owns this town!”
“Correction, Miss Cole,” the elderly gentleman with the leather briefcase spoke up, his deep voice carrying clearly through the silent restaurant. “Mr. Carter was the Chief Executive Officer until four o’clock this afternoon.”
Adrian slammed his palms onto the table. “Who the hell are you? Get out of my sight before I call the Police Commissioner!”
“I am Judge Arthur Vance,” the old man replied calmly, pulling a bound stack of legal injunctions from his briefcase. “And this is Mr. Robert Sterling, Chief Enforcement Officer for the Financial Crimes Division of the SEC.”
Vanessa’s hand froze mid-air as she reached for her glass. Adrian stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically between the federal agents and his wife.
Emma gently shifted Lily in her arms. The toddler had stopped crying, lulled by the sudden quietness of the room. Emma looked down at her damp coat, then turned her eyes back to the man she had married seven years ago.
“You always had a terrible memory, Adrian,” Emma said smoothly, walking around the table until she stood directly at the head of the booth. “You forgot who built Carter Meridian.”
“I built it!” Adrian snarled, his voice cracking. “I brought in every major investor! I negotiated every acquisition!”
“You negotiated the deals I drafted,” Emma replied coolly. “When we met eight years ago, you were a mid-level analyst with two failing shell companies and two hundred thousand dollars in gambling debts. My father gave you the capital to launch Carter Meridian Group on one condition: that ninety percent of the voting shares were held in a blind trust managed by Sterling Holdings.”
Adrian’s breath hitched. “That trust was dissolved during our wedding!”
“No,” Emma corrected softly. “You assumed it was dissolved because I allowed you to put your name on the door and take the public credit. I let you play the visionary founder while I managed the operations, the technology patents, and the institutional relationships from behind the scenes.”
She turned to Judge Vance, who handed her a heavy set of brass keys and a stamped court document.
“Three months ago,” Emma continued, “when you started transferring company funds into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to buy Miss Cole’s loyalty, our internal monitoring systems alerted me immediately. Every single dollar you moved from payroll, every private flight, every piece of jewelry—including that forty-carat diamond ring on Miss Cole’s finger—was tracked, logged, and audited.”
Vanessa gasped, instinctively pulling her right hand back into her lap. “This is ridiculous! Adrian, tell them she’s lying!”
Adrian couldn't speak. Sweat was beginning to bead along his hairline.
“As of sixteen hundred hours today,” Judge Vance announced, reading directly from the judicial order, “the Board of Directors of Carter Meridian Group convened an emergency session. By a vote of eleven to zero, Mr. Adrian Carter has been formally removed from his position as CEO and Chairman due to gross breach of fiduciary duty, corporate embezzlement, and criminal fraud.”
“You can’t do this!” Adrian yelled, stepping around the table toward Emma.
Before he could take two steps, two of the suit-wearing enforcement officers moved forward instantly, placing heavy hands on his shoulders and forcing him back down into his chair.
“Furthermore,” Emma added, looking down at the divorce papers she still held in her hand, “these documents you had your lawyers prepare are entirely invalid. The assets you listed—the Park Avenue penthouse, the Hamptons estate, the company fleet, and the corporate accounts—were never registered under your personal name. They belong to Vanguard Trust.”

She leaned down, placing her hands on the table, bringing her face inches from Adrian’s trembling visage.
“And Vanguard Trust,” Emma whispered, “is owned one hundred percent by me.”
