Chapter 14 - Everything She Stole From Me

Isabella had carried the final secret for thirty-four years.

Adrian's father had discovered Daniel intended to expose both Celeste's fraud and Moretti money laundering.

He feared prison.

He ordered Daniel frightened into silence.

Not killed.

Celeste hijacked the plan.

She imprisoned Daniel and used his disappearance to gain leverage over the Morettis.

By the time Adrian's father realized what she'd done, admitting his role would destroy everyone.

So he stayed silent.

Isabella found out years later.

She hated him for it.

She also remained with him until his death.

People are complicated in ways stories often pretend they aren't.

Adrian struggled most.

His father had been his hero.

Then his burden.

Now something worse.

Human.

Flawed enough to love his family and still destroy another man's life to protect it.

Daniel surprised us.

"I forgave him years ago."

Adrian stared.

"Why?"

"I didn't say I excused him."

That sentence stayed with me.

It became the difference between what I eventually felt for Vanessa, Claire, Isabella, and even my father.

Forgiveness wasn't pretending.

It wasn't forgetting.

It wasn't handing somebody the weapon again.

It was refusing to keep carrying it yourself.

The prosecutions began.

Celeste faced fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, extortion, and identity theft charges.

Marcus cooperated.

Lydia did not.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to assault and conspiracy charges connected to the boutique setup and financial fraud. Her cooperation mattered, but consequences remained.

Claire entered a protected cooperation agreement and surrendered every false identity she had used.

For the first time in her adult life, she applied for identification under her real name.

The fake Amelia Brooks died on paper.

I attended the hearing.

When the clerk confirmed that the fraudulent records had been invalidated, I expected to feel transformed.

I didn't.

I felt hungry.

I bought a sandwich afterward.

Life is rude that way.

The $214 million wallet was placed under federal control pending restitution.

Victims were identified.

Families received money they never expected to see again.

The legitimate Brooks-Moretti Trust remained mine.

After taxes, litigation, and claims, it was still enough money to change my life many times over.

I replaced the flower cooler.

That was my first purchase.

Kayla cried.

"You have millions."

"The peonies were dying."

I also bought the building.

Raised Kayla's salary.

Created an emergency fund for small businesses damaged by online defamation.

And established a legal clinic with Ramirez's help for identity-theft victims.

Adrian called it predictable.

"What does that mean?"

"You got rich and immediately started fixing everybody else's refrigerators."

"Somebody has to."

My relationship with Daniel developed slowly.

He didn't become Dad overnight.

He became Daniel.

Then he became the man who brought coffee to the shop.

Then the man who knew my mother's favorite song.

Then the man I called when the delivery van wouldn't start.

One afternoon, without thinking, I called him Dad.

Neither of us acknowledged it.

His eyes filled anyway.

Isabella became part of Brooks & Bloom.

Not officially.

She simply appeared three afternoons a week and criticized my ribbon choices.

Adrian appeared too.

Usually claiming to visit his mother.

Usually staying after she left.

He wasn't what the newspapers suggested.

He also wasn't innocent.

I made that clear.

"If you're involved in anything illegal, don't bring it near me."

"I'm restructuring."

"That's suspiciously vague."

"It means lawyers are making extraordinary amounts of money."

"Better."

He moved family businesses toward legitimate operations.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Some people left.

Some threatened him.

He kept going.

Months passed.

My cheek healed.

The internet moved on.

Bellamy & Rowe offered me a private settlement.

I rejected the confidentiality clause.

They removed it.

The company publicly apologized to Isabella and me, acknowledged the security footage, and established new intervention procedures.

Then came the final surprise.

A letter arrived at Brooks & Bloom.

No return address.

Inside was my mother's original wedding ring.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

Celeste had taken it from Evelyn years earlier.

A note accompanied it.

Amelia,

Some things should be returned to their real owners.

—V

Vanessa.

I held the ring for a long time.

Then placed it on a chain around my neck.

That evening, Adrian came to the shop.

He carried no security detail.

No black suit.

Just dark jeans and a charcoal sweater.

Almost normal.

Almost.

"I need to show you something."

"Every time a Moretti says that, my week gets worse."

"This may be different."

"May?"

He handed me an envelope.

Inside was a deed.

A property near Lake Michigan.

My mother had owned it with Daniel.

Neither had known it survived the financial seizures because Evelyn transferred it into my name when I was a baby.

Daniel wanted to go there.

So did Isabella.

Adrian asked me to come.

The house was small.

Weathered.

Empty.

Daniel stood outside staring at it.

"Your mother wanted to raise you here."

Inside, dust covered the furniture.

My childhood could have happened in those rooms.

A life stolen before I remembered having it.

I walked upstairs alone.

The final bedroom door was closed.

My name was carved faintly into the wood.

AMELIA.

My hand shook as I reached for the knob.

From the other side came a faint mechanical sound.

A projector.

Someone had turned it on.

I opened the door.

My mother appeared on the wall.

Alive.

Smiling.

And beside her was a little girl I recognized as myself.

May you like

Then Evelyn looked into the camera and said:

"Amelia, someday I hope you'll bring the man you love back to this room..."
