Chapter 13 - The Night Vanessa Finally Talked

Lydia looked more like me than Claire ever had.

Same cardigan.

Same hairstyle.

Same glasses I wore for invoices.

Even my mother's necklace.

That made me angry.

"Take that off."

She touched the necklace.

"Sentimental?"

"It belonged to my mother."

"So did most of the evidence that ruined mine."

She removed it.

Placed it on the counter.

Unexpected.

Lydia wasn't there for a gunfight.

She wanted to negotiate.

She knew the police were listening.

She didn't care.

Because she had leverage.

Marcus.

He had the wallet's encrypted second key.

My recovery phrase wasn't enough.

Evelyn had divided access.

One key with me.

One unknowingly hidden in Marcus's childhood records.

Lydia had Marcus.

She wanted my half.

Then Vanessa entered.

Nobody expected her.

She walked past Adrian.

Past Ramirez.

Straight toward Lydia.

"You used us."

Lydia smiled.

"So did your mother."

"Claire and I were children."

"So was I."

Vanessa stopped.

Something passed between them.

Recognition.

Not forgiveness.

All four of Celeste and Margaret's children had been shaped by women who treated love as leverage.

Marcus chose power.

Lydia chose revenge.

Vanessa chose cruelty until cruelty turned on her.

Claire chose to disappear into somebody else.

But choices could change.

Vanessa removed a phone from her purse.

"I recorded everything."

Lydia's smile disappeared.

For years, Vanessa had kept a private archive.

Insurance against Celeste.

Marcus.

Lydia.

Everyone.

She handed the phone to Ramirez.

Lydia lunged.

Adrian moved.

So did Claire.

The fight lasted seconds.

Lydia was arrested.

But Marcus was still missing.

The phone contained his location.

Navy Pier.

A maintenance building near the water.

We found him bleeding but alive.

He laughed when Adrian entered.

"Little cousin."

Adrian's expression remained flat.

"You betrayed my mother."

"I saved your family more times than you'll ever know."

"And destroyed others."

Marcus looked at me.

"Evelyn understood. There are no clean fortunes."

"Then mine can start getting cleaner."

He laughed again.

I told him the wallet would be returned to victims.

His face changed.

Two hundred fourteen million dollars.

The fortune everyone had lied, stolen, threatened, and nearly killed for.

And I didn't want it.

That was the one move none of them had prepared for.

Marcus gave Ramirez the second key in exchange for medical treatment and the opportunity to negotiate cooperation.

Not freedom.

Just a chance to talk.

As paramedics took him away, he looked at Adrian.

"There's something you don't know."

Adrian didn't respond.

"Your father knew."

"Knew what?"

"About Celeste. About Evelyn. About Daniel."

Daniel stepped closer.

Marcus smiled weakly.

"He wasn't protecting Amelia."

The ambulance doors remained open.

Marcus looked directly at Isabella.

"He was protecting the person who ordered Daniel's disappearance."

Everyone turned toward her.

May you like

And Isabella whispered:

"I know."
