Chapter 5 - My Mother's Final Statement

Nobody spoke.
Claire stared at Thomas.
"My mother had cancer."
"She did."
"Then what are you saying?"
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"She was getting better."
Claire felt the room tilt.
Rebecca grabbed her arm.
Thomas explained.
Margaret Walker's cancer had entered remission.
Then, weeks before she was supposed to testify against Charles Bennett, she suffered a sudden medical decline.
Her death had been ruled a complication from treatment.
Thomas never believed it.
Before he could investigate, Charles threatened Rachel.
Thomas disappeared to protect his daughter.
Charles eventually found him and kept him hidden through threats, financial coercion, and years of isolation.
"Why didn't you come back?" Rachel demanded.
Thomas cried.
"Because every time I tried, they showed me photographs of you."
Rachel turned away.
The investigators secured the cassette.
Hours later, its contents were digitized.
Claire watched her mother appear on a screen.
Margaret looked thin but alert.
"If Claire ever sees this," she began, "then I was right to be afraid."
Claire started crying.
Margaret explained the financial scheme.
She named Charles.
She named Arthur.
But she did not name Daniel.
Daniel had been only twenty-three then.
Margaret's final words were for Claire.
"Do not let what they did turn you into someone who cannot trust. Be careful, sweetheart. But stay kind."
Claire covered her face.
Her mother had known darkness and still refused to let it define her.
Claire decided she would do the same.
But kindness was not forgiveness.
Daniel remained in custody.
Arthur was arrested the next morning.
Charles had escaped the warehouse during the raid.
Investigators believed he was still in New York.
Thomas entered protective custody.
Rachel stayed with him.
For the first time, Claire and Rachel were alone after everything.
Rachel approached her.
"I owe you an apology that isn't big enough."
Claire said nothing.
"I knew Daniel was married."
"Yes."
"I believed his marriage was ending, but I knew."
"Yes."
Rachel's eyes filled.
"I hurt you."
"You did."
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"Good."
Rachel nodded.
Claire continued.
"But you also gave me evidence that may save my mother's foundation."
Rachel looked at her.
"Both things can be true."
Rachel cried quietly.
Claire left.
She returned to the penthouse two days later accompanied by Ethan and investigators.
The bed had been stripped.
The jewelry box remained.
Claire opened it.
Inside was the diamond necklace.
Underneath was a card.
FOR CLAIRE.
She stared.
The necklace hadn't been Rachel's.
It had been hers.
Daniel had bought it for Claire.
That somehow made everything worse.
On the back of the card, Daniel had written:
Six years and I still choose you.
Claire sat down.
The irony was almost unbearable.
Ethan found her there.
"You okay?"
"No."
He sat beside her.
"Good answer."
She laughed through tears.
For the first time in days, the laugh felt real.
They spent hours gathering Claire's belongings.
Before leaving, Claire found Daniel's old phone in a drawer.
Investigators searched it.
There were hundreds of messages between Daniel and Charles.
The earliest messages proved Daniel had initially approached Claire because his father instructed him to.
But something changed after their engagement.
Daniel began resisting.
CHARLES: Get access to the foundation.
DANIEL: No.
CHARLES: That was the purpose.
DANIEL: Not anymore.
Months later:
CHARLES: You're choosing her over your family?
DANIEL: Yes.
Claire stopped reading.
Ethan watched her.
"He loved you."
Claire wiped her eyes.
"He still cheated."
"I know."
"And he still forged my signature."
"I know."
Love didn't erase choices.
That realization freed her.
Daniel's feelings could have been genuine.
His betrayal was genuine too.
Both could exist.
That evening, Claire's attorney filed for divorce.
The next morning, Daniel requested to see her.
Claire refused.
He sent a handwritten letter through his attorney.
She left it unopened.
Three days later, investigators discovered Daniel had agreed to cooperate.
His testimony implicated Arthur and Charles.
He also admitted the forgery, fraud conspiracy, and affair.
No excuses.
No attempt to blame Rachel.
Claire respected the truth without forgiving the behavior.
Weeks passed.
The foundation's assets were frozen temporarily and then restored.
No money was ultimately lost.
Claire returned to work.
She changed every financial control.
No single person would ever again have the authority Daniel once possessed.
Thomas and Rachel began rebuilding their relationship.
Ethan was cleared when forensic analysis proved his signature had also been forged.
Rebecca remained beside Claire.
Then, one evening, Claire finally opened Daniel's letter.
Claire,
There is no version of this letter where I deserve you back.
I approached you because my father told me to.
Then I fell in love with you.
I should have told you everything.
Instead, I spent years believing I could keep you and outrun the man I had been raised to become.
When the company began failing, I panicked.
I told myself borrowing the foundation money temporarily wasn't theft.
Then I forged your signature.
Then I betrayed our marriage.
Each terrible decision made the next one easier.
Rachel did not destroy us.
I did.
Claire stopped reading.
She cried.
Then continued.
I am cooperating because it is the first useful thing I can still do for you.
Please protect your mother's work.
And please don't let me teach you that love itself was the mistake.
Daniel.
Claire folded the letter.
Her phone rang.
Rebecca.
"We found Charles."
Claire stood.
"Where?"
Rebecca paused.
"At your mother's grave."
Claire's blood ran cold.
"Is he in custody?"
"No."
Then Claire heard a noise outside her apartment.
Someone inserted a key into the lock.
May you like
The handle slowly turned.
And a man's voice whispered her name.
