Chapter 4 - The Dead Man Calling

Daniel ended the call immediately.
Claire stared at him.
"Your father is alive."
Daniel didn't answer.
"Daniel."
"Go home."
"Your dead father just called you."
"Claire, leave."
She stepped closer.
"Did you know?"
His silence told her.
Claire felt another piece of her marriage collapse.
Charles Bennett had supposedly died from a heart attack while sailing near Greece.
There had been a memorial.
Daniel had cried in Claire's arms.
Claire had comforted him through the night.
Another performance.
"How long?"
"Claire."
"How long have you known he was alive?"
Daniel looked toward the windows.
"Since the beginning."
She laughed once in disbelief.
"The beginning of what?"
"My marriage?"
His eyes met hers.
That was answer enough.
Claire left.
This time Daniel didn't stop her.
Rebecca was waiting two blocks away.
Claire climbed into the car and told her everything.
Rebecca's face turned white when Claire mentioned Charles.
"Then Thomas may still be alive too."
Rachel leaned forward from the back seat.
"My father?"
"If Charles survived whatever happened twelve years ago, Thomas may have."
Rachel began crying.
They returned to the hotel.
Ethan had been researching the Bennett family.
He found a private company registered in Switzerland.
The listed director was a man named Carl Benton.
Same initials.
C.B.
Rachel searched corporate photographs.
One image showed an older man leaving a conference in Geneva.
Claire recognized him instantly.
Charles Bennett.
Alive.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Rebecca contacted investigators.
The scheme expanded quickly.
Charles had apparently spent years operating overseas while Daniel and Arthur controlled the American companies.
Claire's marriage had given them something Charles never managed to obtain directly:
access to the Walker foundation.
Rachel found another file.
A surveillance photograph of Claire.
Taken before she met Daniel.
Then another.
And another.
Daniel hadn't accidentally met her.
He had been sent to meet her.
Claire walked into the bathroom and vomited.
When she returned, nobody offered empty comfort.
She appreciated that.
Ethan handed her water.
"Whatever the marriage started as," he said, "that doesn't mean every day was fake."
Claire looked at him.
"I don't know which possibility hurts more."
That Daniel had never loved her.
Or that he had loved her and betrayed her anyway.
Rebecca's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Everyone looked toward her.
She listened.
Then said, "Send it."
A photograph arrived.
Rebecca showed them.
A man had entered the United States that morning using a Canadian passport.
Charles Bennett.
"He came back," Claire whispered.
Rachel looked at the time.
"Because Daniel told him Claire found the files."
The room suddenly felt unsafe.
Rebecca moved them to another hotel under Ethan's name.
That afternoon, Claire met investigators and provided the documents.
They warned her not to contact Daniel.
She agreed.
At seven that evening, she received a message.
DANIEL: I need to see you.
She ignored it.
Another arrived.
DANIEL: My father is here.
Then:
DANIEL: He knows you have the recording.
Claire showed Rebecca.
"Don't answer."
She didn't.
At eight seventeen, Daniel sent a photograph.
Rachel gasped.
It showed an older man sitting in a chair.
Alive.
His wrists appeared tied.
Rachel zoomed in.
"Dad."
Thomas Monroe.
Her father.
The man everyone believed had died twenty years earlier.
Below the photograph Daniel had written:
My father kept him alive.
Rachel grabbed Claire's phone.
"We have to find him."
Rebecca stopped her.
"This could be bait."
"I don't care."
Claire understood.
If someone had shown her a photograph of her mother alive, reason would have disappeared too.
Another message arrived.
DANIEL: Charles wants the original documents in exchange for Monroe.
Rachel whispered, "Please."
Claire looked at Rebecca.
"We don't give him anything."
Rachel stared at her.
"My father—"
"We give him copies."
Rebecca understood immediately.
They coordinated with investigators.
Claire replied.
CLAIRE: Where?
Daniel sent an address.
An abandoned Bennett warehouse in Brooklyn.
Midnight.
Rachel insisted on coming.
Claire refused.
"You've waited twenty years. Don't risk dying twenty minutes before you get him back."
At eleven forty, Claire approached the warehouse while investigators watched from surrounding positions.
She carried a folder.
Inside were copies.
A small transmitter was hidden beneath her coat.
Daniel waited near the entrance.
He looked broken.
"You shouldn't have come."
"You asked me to."
"I didn't send those messages."
Claire froze.
"What?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"My father has my phone."
The warehouse lights suddenly went out.
Daniel grabbed Claire.
She fought him.
"Stop," he whispered. "I'm trying to get you out."
A door slammed behind them.
An older man's voice echoed through the darkness.
"Claire Walker Bennett."
Lights flickered on.
Charles stood on a metal platform.
Beside him was Thomas Monroe.
Alive.
Rachel's father lifted his head.
Then Charles smiled.
"You look exactly like your mother."
Claire held the folder tighter.
"Let him go."
Charles laughed.
"You still think this is about money."
He descended the stairs.
Daniel moved in front of Claire.
His father noticed.
"Interesting."
"Let her leave," Daniel said.
Charles looked disappointed.
"You've always been weak where she is concerned."
Claire stared at Daniel.
Charles continued.
"Six years ago, I told my son to marry you."
Claire already knew.
But hearing it directly was different.
"And he did."
Charles smiled.
"The only mistake was that somewhere along the way, he forgot why."
Daniel looked at Claire.
She saw shame in his eyes.
Maybe even love.
It didn't matter.
Not yet.
Sirens sounded outside.
Charles's smile vanished.
He looked at Daniel.
"You brought them."
Daniel shook his head.
Charles reached into his coat.
Investigators stormed the warehouse.
Chaos erupted.
Claire dropped to the floor.
Daniel covered her.
Thomas fell sideways with his chair.
Charles ran toward a rear exit.
Officers pursued him.
Within seconds, the warehouse was filled with commands.
Rachel's father was freed.
Daniel was handcuffed.
Claire stood.
Daniel looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
She couldn't answer.
An officer approached Rebecca, who had entered with the investigators.
"We found something upstairs."
"What?"
"A locked office."
They climbed the stairs.
Inside were boxes of records.
Old photographs.
Hard drives.
One box was labeled WALKER.
Claire opened it.
Her mother's name appeared on dozens of pages.
Then she found a video cassette.
A label was taped across the front.
MARGARET WALKER — FINAL STATEMENT.
Rebecca stared at it.
Claire whispered, "My mother left another message."
Thomas Monroe appeared behind them.
His face changed when he saw the tape.
"No."
Rachel stared at her father.
"What is it?"
May you like
Thomas looked directly at Claire.
"Your mother didn't die the way you were told."
