Chapter 2 - The Darkness Behind The Gates

Mark stepped into the dim hallway.
His hands rested in his coat pockets.
“Why did you do this, Mark?”
“My mother was going to destroy us.”
“Toby is our son!”
“He isn’t our son, Clara.”
Clara backed against the wall.
“What are you talking about?”
“Sarah never gave birth to Toby.”
The words hung cold in the air.
“Sarah was severely ill,” Mark said quietly.
“She couldn’t carry a child safely.”
“Eleanor paid a young nurse to carry him.”
“That woman was Hannah Vance.”
Clara felt the floor tilt beneath her feet.
“You lied to me for five years.”
“I tried to protect you, Clara.”
“By giving Toby to Eleanor?”
“Eleanor owns the construction firm,” Mark said.
“She threatened to ruin my entire life.”
“She said she would freeze our bank accounts.”
Heavy headlights flashed through the front window.
A black sedan pulled into the driveway.
Two men in dark suits stepped out.
Eleanor walked behind them with a cane.
She pushed open the front door without knocking.
“Take the boy’s luggage,” Eleanor ordered.
Clara ran to the hallway stairs.
“You can’t take him from this house!”
Eleanor raised a legal paper.
“The judge signed the order an hour ago.”
“You have no legal standing here, Clara.”
“You are not his biological mother.”
Toby stood at the top of the stairs.
He clutched his favorite stuffed bear.
“Mommy, where am I going?”
Clara tried to reach for him.
One of the men blocked her path.
Mark stood in the corner, silent and defeated.
“Mark!” Clara screamed. “Stop her!”
Mark squeezed his eyes shut.
He turned his back toward the room.
Eleanor took Toby by the hand.
They walked out into the dark night.
The heavy front door slammed shut.
Clara collapsed onto her knees.
The house became empty and silent.
Mark did not try to comfort her.
He left through the back garage door.
The next morning, rain poured against Clara’s windshield.
She drove two hours to the Ohio address.
It was a modest white clinic near the river.
Clara pushed open the front door.
Hannah Vance stood behind the counter.
She wore a faded denim coat.
“I knew you would come,” Hannah said.
“Tell me the truth,” Clara demanded.
Hannah pointed toward a quiet side office.
They sat down across from each other.
“Eleanor framed me seven years ago,” Hannah said.
“She claimed I stole medicine from her hospital.”
“She forced me to relinquish my rights.”
“Why did you send Toby that medicine?”
Hannah pulled out a medical file.
“Toby has a rare blood disorder.”
“Eleanor refused to pay for proper treatment.”
“She used cheap substitutes to save money.”
“The medicine I send keeps him alive.”
Clara covered her mouth in absolute horror.
“Mark knew about this?”
“Mark tried to stop her years ago,” Hannah whispered.
“But Eleanor holds his father’s debts over him.”
“He is terrified of his own mother.”
Clara stood up with new determination.
“I’m getting my son back today.”
“You can’t fight Eleanor alone,” Hannah warned.
“I’m not alone anymore,” Clara said.
Two hours later, Clara arrived at Eleanor’s estate.
The tall iron gates were locked tight.
Clara pressed the metal intercom button repeatedly.
Eleanor’s voice came through the speaker.
“Leave this property immediately, Clara.”
“I know about the medicine, Eleanor!”
“You have no proof of anything.”
The gates suddenly opened halfway.
Mark stepped through the gap alone.
He carried a thick yellow folder.
Clara ran up to her husband.
“Mark, we can stop her together.”
Mark looked at her with hollow eyes.
“It’s over, Clara.”
He handed her a formal court summons.
“What is this?”
“I filed an affidavit this morning.”
“I testified that you are mentally unstable.”
Clara felt her heart completely break.
“You swore an oath against me?”
“It was the only way,” Mark murmured.
“The judge granted Eleanor full permanent custody.”
Clara looked up at the main mansion window.
Toby was standing behind the glass pane.
He pressed his small hands against the window.
He was crying for her behind the glass.
Mark turned around and walked away.
The heavy iron gates slammed shut between them.

Clara stood alone in the freezing rain.
She had lost her family, her home, and her hope.
