Chapter 1 - The Secret In The Church

Seven-year-old Toby walked up the aisle.

He stopped in front of a quiet stranger.

He wrapped his small arms around her waist.

“Thank you for sending the medicine, Mommy.”

Clara dropped her memorial program.

The paper fluttered to the cold stone floor.

Her heart pounded inside her chest.

Toby’s mother had died five years ago.

Clara had raised him since he was two.

The woman knelt down slowly.

She touched Toby’s cheek with a trembling hand.

She wore a worn silver bracelet on her wrist.

Clara stepped forward with shaking knees.

“Who are you?”

Mark grabbed Clara’s arm tightly.

His face was completely pale.

“Clara, leave it alone.”

“She called her Mommy, Mark.”

“He’s just confused today.”

The stranger stood up immediately.

She backed toward the glass doors.

Her eyes were filled with deep tears.

She vanished into the heavy rain outside.

Clara looked down at Toby.

“Why did you call her that, sweetie?”

Toby pulled a tiny blue bottle from his pocket.

“She leaves these in my school locker every month.”

Clara took the plastic bottle.

There was no prescription label on it.

Eleanor stepped out from the front pew.

She gripped her pearl necklace with thin fingers.

“Give me that bottle right now, Clara.”

Eleanor was Mark’s wealthy, controlling mother.

She had paid for the entire memorial service.

“This is private family business,” Eleanor whispered.

“Toby is my nephew,” Clara said firmly.

“He is my grandson,” Eleanor replied coldly.

“And you are only an in-law.”

Clara looked at her husband.

“Mark, say something.”

Mark stared at the carpet.

He refused to meet her eyes.

“Listen to my mother, Clara.”

Distrust flooded Clara’s mind.

She backed away from both of them.

She held the blue bottle tight in her fist.

That night, the house was completely silent.

Mark slept on the living room sofa.

He had not spoken a word since dinner.

Clara sat at the kitchen table.

The blue bottle sat under the bright lamp.

She turned the plastic cap carefully.

Inside was a single folded piece of paper.

It contained a handwritten address.

It also contained a short note.

“Keep him away from Eleanor’s doctor.”

Clara’s hands began to shake.

She recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was identical to the letters in Mark’s desk.

She stood up and walked to the hallway closet.

She pulled down Mark’s old leather satchel.

Inside was a hidden metal box.

She used the small key from his keyring.

The box opened with a quiet click.

Inside were twelve bank withdrawal slips.

Every slip was made out for five thousand dollars.

Every payment went to a clinic in Ohio.

The clinic was registered under a familiar name.

It belonged to the woman from the church.

Her name was Hannah Vance.

Clara found a sealed brown envelope at the bottom.

It bore the seal of the family probate court.

She opened the thick paper envelope.

It contained Toby’s original adoption file.

Clara’s name was listed as his mother.

But a fresh red stamp covered the front page.

The stamp read: REVOKED.

Clara turned to the final page.

Mark’s signature sat clearly at the bottom.

Beside it was a legal surrender clause.

Mark had signed away their parental rights yesterday.

He had transferred full guardianship to Eleanor.

Clara gasped for air.

The hallway light suddenly turned on.

Mark stood at the end of the corridor.

He looked at the opened metal box.

“You weren’t supposed to see that,” he whispered.
