Chapter 9 - Luca Moretti's Real Reason

"You knew," Norah said.

Luca entered.

"Part of it."

"How long?"

"Since yesterday."

Grant looked between them.

"I'm going to make coffee."

Nobody stopped him.

Luca placed the missing page on Eleanor's desk.

"My father asked me to protect Hian if Eleanor ever lost control."

"Why you?"

"Because Samuel saved my father's life."

Norah waited.

Luca told her.

Years earlier, before Moretti Holdings became respectable enough for magazine covers, Luca's father had been surrounded by men who believed fear was a business model.

Samuel Vale helped him separate legitimate holdings from criminal associates.

It nearly got Samuel killed once.

Possibly twice.

When Samuel later died in a construction accident, Luca's father suspected retaliation.

He couldn't prove it.

"So you knew the land had history."

"Yes."

"And still offered forty million."

"Because I wanted the project."

"Only that?"

"No."

At least he was honest.

"What else?"

"I wanted the records."

Norah folded her arms.

"So you were using Bennett Construction too."

"I was investigating it."

"That's a polished word for the same thing."

He accepted that.

She appreciated it despite herself.

"Why didn't you tell me when I walked into your conference room?"

"Because I didn't know whether you were involved."

Norah laughed once.

"Fair."

"You changed my mind quickly."

"How?"

"You accused your own family before asking me to protect you."

That wasn't romantic.

It was better.

It was respect.

The missing page contained no shocking revelation about Luca himself.

Instead, his father had written that Luca would inherit the obligation to protect the evidence if Moretti Holdings ever became involved.

"He made you responsible for a promise you didn't make."

"Yes."

Norah looked at him.

"Parents."

For the first time, Luca smiled fully.

"Parents."

Their alliance changed that night.

Not into trust.

Not yet.

But into something chosen rather than inherited.

They built a plan.

Hale expected Bennett Construction to collapse.

Richard expected Norah to save it quietly.

Grant expected to lose everything.

Norah decided all three expectations were wrong.

She called an emergency board meeting.

Then she called the banks.

Then suppliers.

Then employees.

She told them enough truth to prevent rumors from becoming weapons.

By morning, everyone knew Bennett Construction faced a governance crisis.

They also knew Norah Bennett was taking responsibility for fixing it.

At noon, Richard arrived at headquarters.

His access card no longer worked.

He stared at the reader.

Norah opened the door from inside.

"You locked me out."

"Temporarily."

"This is my company."

"That's what we're voting on tomorrow."

His face hardened.

"You think employees will follow you?"

"I'm not asking them to follow me."

"What are you asking?"

"Whether they want a company that still exists next year."

Richard stepped closer.

"I built this."

"So did Mom."

"I sacrificed everything."

"So did she."

"You don't know what it took."

"No. Because whenever anyone asked, you called questions disloyal."

That struck him.

Richard looked older suddenly.

"Norah."

She waited.

"I never meant to hurt you."

She believed him.

That was perhaps the saddest part.

"Intent doesn't repair documents."

He looked away.

Grant arrived.

Richard's expression changed.

"My son."

Grant stopped beside Norah.

"No."

Richard stared.

"No what?"

"Don't use me against her."

"Grant—"

"I signed things I shouldn't have signed. I created Hian Consulting. I'll answer for that."

Richard looked genuinely betrayed.

Norah almost pitied him.

Almost.

Then Melissa Crane called.

Norah put the phone on speaker.

"I have evidence against Hale," Melissa said.

"Why would I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

Good answer.

"What evidence?"

"Recordings."

"Of?"

"Hale ordering the forged authorizations."

Norah looked at Luca.

"Where are you?"

Melissa gave an address.

Then added:

"There's something else. Richard didn't order your signature forged on the Moretti contract."

Norah looked at her father.

He looked equally confused.

"Who did?"

Melissa whispered:

"Grant."

Silence.

Norah slowly turned.

Her brother had gone completely pale.

"Grant?"

He shook his head.

"Norah, listen to me."

"Did you forge my signature?"

"Not for the reason you think."

"Yes or no?"

Grant swallowed.

"Yes."

Norah felt the room disappear around her.

"Why?"

Grant reached inside his jacket.

He pulled out an envelope.

"I was trying to force you to find this."

He held it toward her.

Norah didn't take it.

"What is it?"

Grant's hand trembled.

"The document Dad was going to sign the morning after the Moretti closing."

Norah finally opened the envelope.

She read the first line.

Then looked at Richard.

Her father whispered:

"Grant, where did you get that?"

May you like

Because the document wasn't a sale.

It was a confession.
