Chapter 7 - The Man Behind Hian Consulting

Luca read Eleanor's warning twice.

"I never saw this."

Norah believed him.

She wasn't sure why.

Perhaps because Luca had done the one thing every Bennett man seemed incapable of doing.

When he didn't know something, he said so.

The sealed basement lay beneath a warehouse scheduled for demolition.

They entered the next morning with Margaret, Grant, engineers, and police observers.

Behind a false wall they found filing cabinets.

Not money.

Not weapons.

Records.

Thousands of them.

Samuel Vale had discovered a network of fraudulent land acquisitions dating back decades.

Luca's father had financed Samuel because several parcels had originally belonged to Moretti companies.

Samuel and Eleanor had been quietly repairing titles.

Then Samuel died.

Richard exploited the confusion.

But another name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Hale.

Norah recognized it immediately.

Hale Urban Partners.

Luca's largest rival.

And the silent lender behind Bennett Construction's recent debt.

Everything suddenly connected.

Hale had been positioning Bennett Construction for failure.

If the Moretti deal collapsed without an alternative, Hale could seize Bennett assets—including the riverfront.

Grant stared at the records.

"Dad knew?"

Norah looked at Richard's signatures.

"He had to."

Luca's expression became grim.

"The forty-million-dollar deal wasn't the target."

"The land was," Norah said.

Someone wanted Moretti money to clear existing debt, consolidate ownership, and make the parcel easy to transfer.

Her forged approval was the bridge.

Grant sat down.

"We were being used."

Norah looked at him.

"You were also helping."

He nodded.

No defense.

Progress.

Margaret found another document.

A letter from Eleanor.

Luca,

If you're reading this, your father was right. The land matters, but not because of its price. Samuel discovered enough evidence here to return properties to families who lost them through fraudulent liens. Do not let Richard or Hale bury it.

Norah read over his shoulder.

"Your father knew?"

"Some of it."

"Why didn't you?"

"He kept me away from the older business."

Luca folded the letter carefully.

"Maybe he had reasons."

Norah understood that feeling too well.

Parents called secrecy protection.

Children inherited the consequences.

That afternoon, Hale Urban Partners filed notice of default against Bennett Construction.

Richard had missed a covenant.

They had seventy-two hours before Hale could begin seizure proceedings.

Grant stared at the notice.

"Dad planned this."

Norah shook her head.

"No."

Richard had done terrible things.

But this would destroy him too.

Someone else had accelerated the default.

They checked the authorization.

Again, Norah's name appeared.

This time she almost laughed.

"They really need new material."

Luca didn't smile.

"This signature was submitted yesterday."

Norah froze.

Daniel had been in custody.

Richard had been under observation.

Grant was beside her.

"Then who signed it?"

Margaret examined the digital certificate.

"This isn't copied."

Norah looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"It's your valid token."

"My token is in my office safe."

Grant went pale.

"No."

"What?"

"Your office was cleaned yesterday."

"By whom?"

"Dad's executive assistant."

Norah's stomach tightened.

"Melissa?"

Melissa Crane had worked for Richard for twelve years.

Quiet.

Efficient.

Trusted.

Norah called.

Disconnected.

Security footage showed Melissa leaving Bennett headquarters with two boxes.

Luca obtained the parking records.

Her car drove directly to Hale Urban Partners.

Norah understood.

Melissa wasn't Richard's assistant.

She was Hale's person inside Bennett Construction.

For twelve years.

They went to her apartment.

Empty.

On the kitchen counter sat a single envelope addressed to Norah.

Inside was her security token.

And a note.

YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.

Norah turned it over.

Another sentence.

LUCA WAS.

She looked at him.

His phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Norah asked.

Luca lowered the phone.

"Hale just requested a private meeting."

"When?"

"Now."

"Why?"

Luca showed her the message.

Victor Hale had attached a photograph.

It showed Richard Bennett sitting in Hale's office.

A contract lay before him.
