Chapter 2 - Five Men at the Gate

The iron gates opened slowly.

Adrian was already in the driveway when the first SUV rolled through.

Claire watched from the upstairs landing.

He had changed.

Ten minutes earlier, he had been a man shouting at a child.

Now he wore the careful expression of someone realizing witnesses were coming.

Vanessa stood just inside the front door.

“What is this?” she whispered.

Adrian did not answer.

The first vehicle stopped.

Ethan got out.

At forty-three, Claire’s oldest brother had the calm manner of a man who spent his career in courtrooms waiting for other people to make mistakes. He wore a charcoal suit with no tie and carried a leather briefcase.

Marcus stepped from the second SUV.

He was forty-one, broad-shouldered, quiet, and had spent eighteen years managing financial audits for large companies.

Daniel arrived next.

A trauma surgeon who hated confrontation but was terrifying when finally pushed.

Luke followed.

Then Nathan.

Five brothers.

Five different tempers.

One identical expression.

Adrian glanced back toward the house.

Claire came downstairs.

Emma remained upstairs with their longtime housekeeper, Rosa, who had returned from the market minutes earlier.

Claire stepped outside.

Ethan looked at her once.

His eyes moved over her face.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Emma?”

“Safe.”

Marcus looked toward Adrian.

“Good.”

Adrian raised both hands.

“Everyone needs to calm down.”

Nathan laughed once.

Nobody else did.

“This is a family disagreement,” Adrian continued.

Ethan walked toward him.

“Then why were you reviewing documents from our family trust?”

Adrian’s face tightened.

Claire stopped beside Ethan.

“Tell me what he transferred.”

Ethan opened the briefcase.

Adrian moved.

Not toward Claire.

Toward the house.

Marcus stepped into his path.

“Stay.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You don’t give me orders on my property.”

Luke looked at Claire.

Then at Ethan.

Then back at Adrian.

“Your property?”

Adrian realized the mistake too late.

Claire folded her arms.

“Go ahead,” she said. “Explain that one.”

Vanessa appeared behind Adrian.

“Claire, this is getting ridiculous.”

Nathan looked at her torn dress.

“You must be Vanessa.”

Her chin lifted.

“And you are?”

“The uncle of the little girl you accused.”

Vanessa looked away.

Ethan removed several pages.

“At 9:14 this morning, a transfer request was submitted to Westbridge Private Bank against the estate’s equity line.”

Claire stared at him.

“What equity line?”

“Exactly.”

Adrian spoke quickly.

“It was preliminary.”

Ethan turned.

“You told the bank Claire had authorized a six-hundred-thousand-dollar secured credit facility.”

Claire felt the blood drain from her face.

“You did what?”

“It wasn’t finalized.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Yes, it was.”

Adrian looked at him.

Marcus held up his phone.

“The account was funded at 11:03.”

Claire could hear birds in the palm trees.

A lawn sprinkler clicking.

Vanessa breathing too quickly.

“Where did the money go?” Claire asked.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Tell her.”

Adrian said nothing.

“Tell me.”

“It was an investment.”

Claire laughed softly.

The sound surprised everyone, including her.

“You borrowed six hundred thousand dollars against a house you don’t own.”

“I was acting in our interest.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I did not forge anything.”

Claire held up the paper Emma had found.

Adrian froze.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for an instant.

But Nathan saw it.

“So you recognize that?” he asked her.

“No.”

“You looked like you did.”

“I don’t.”

Ethan took the document from Claire.

He examined it.

Then looked at Adrian.

“This is a copy of the authorization sent to the bank.”

“You can’t prove I signed it.”

Claire stared at him.

“You just said you didn’t forge anything.”

“I said you authorized the investment.”

“I never authorized it.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire, this is exactly why I didn’t want your brothers involved. They make everything hostile.”

Ethan’s expression remained almost pleasant.

“You stole six hundred thousand dollars.”

“Allegedly.”

Marcus smiled without humor.

“That word isn’t going to help you.”

Vanessa moved toward the driveway.

Nathan shifted slightly.

He did not block her.

He only looked at her.

She stopped anyway.

Claire turned to Vanessa.

“Where were you when Emma supposedly tore your dress?”

“In the hallway.”

“Emma says you were in the guest room.”

“She’s eight.”

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“And?”

“She could be confused.”

“She says she watched you cut your own dress.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Then laughed.

“That’s insane.”

Claire studied her.

“Then you won’t mind if we look at the cameras.”

Adrian spoke immediately.

“The upstairs cameras are offline.”

Every face turned toward him.

Claire did not.

She kept looking at Vanessa.

“How do you know?”

Adrian hesitated.

“I noticed last week.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“Claire—”

“I check the security system every Sunday because Emma sleepwalked twice last year. The cameras were working three nights ago.”

Nobody spoke.

Luke took out his phone.

“What system?”

Claire told him.

“I installed half of it,” Luke said. “Outdoor feeds have independent backup.”

Adrian’s voice sharpened.

“You’re not accessing anything without my permission.”

Luke looked genuinely confused.

“Why would I need your permission?”

“This is my home.”

“No,” Claire said.

The word landed harder this time.

Adrian looked at her.

Claire had spent years avoiding arguments about money.

She had never wanted Adrian to feel like a guest.

When they married, she added him to household accounts.

She gave him use of the office.

She let him oversee renovations.

She had even stopped correcting people when they called the estate “Adrian’s place.”

Maybe that had been kindness.

Maybe it had been stupidity.

“This house belongs to the Bennett Family Trust,” Claire said. “I’m the primary beneficiary. My brothers are trustees. You have residency through our marriage. Nothing more.”

Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward Adrian.

That reaction was different.

Not fear.

Shock.

She had not known.

Claire noticed.

So did Ethan.

Adrian’s mouth became a thin line.

“You’re humiliating me in front of everyone.”

Claire almost could not believe him.

“You screamed at my daughter over a dress.”

“She needs to learn—”

“Stop saying that.”

Her voice rose for the first time.

Emma appeared at the upstairs railing.

“Mommy?”

Everyone looked up.

Claire immediately softened.

“Go back with Rosa, sweetheart.”

Adrian pointed.

“No. She needs to come down and admit what she did.”

Nathan took one step forward.

Ethan put a hand against his chest.

Not now.

Claire looked at Adrian.

“You will not speak to her.”

“I’m her stepfather.”

“Not tonight.”

His face darkened.

“You can’t erase six years because she lied.”

Emma began crying again.

Claire crossed the foyer and went upstairs.

Behind her, she heard Daniel say, “Good job, Adrian.”

Claire reached Emma.

“Come on.”

She carried her back to the bedroom.

Rosa closed the door after them.

“Stay with her,” Claire said.

Rosa nodded.

“I heard him yelling.”

Claire looked at her.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Did you see Vanessa earlier?”

Rosa hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Coming out of Mr. Adrian’s office.”

“With anything?”

“A folder.”

Claire’s skin prickled.

“What kind?”

“Brown leather.”

The same one Adrian had been carrying minutes before her brothers arrived.

Claire returned downstairs.

Luke was standing beside the security panel.

“I found something.”

Adrian stiffened.

Luke tapped the screen.

“Somebody disabled the interior cameras manually at 5:42 p.m.”

Claire had arrived at 6:17.

“Can you recover anything?”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe?”

“The local recording unit was wiped.”

Adrian exhaled.

Too quickly.

Luke looked toward him.

“But whoever did it forgot about the cloud mirror.”

Vanessa’s face emptied.

Luke entered a code.

A loading icon appeared.

Adrian stepped forward.

“This is absurd.”

Marcus blocked him again.

Luke looked at Claire.

“There are eight backed-up clips.”

“Play them.”

The first showed an empty upstairs hallway.

The second showed Emma chasing Snowball.

The third showed Vanessa walking toward the guest room.

She looked over her shoulder before entering.

The fourth had no sound.

Vanessa came out seven minutes later.

The dress was already torn.

Emma appeared behind her.

Vanessa turned sharply.

The fifth clip showed Adrian entering the hall.

Vanessa immediately grabbed the torn fabric and pointed toward Emma.

Claire’s jaw tightened.

There was no audio.

But there did not need to be.

Emma had told the truth.

Adrian’s face went pale.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“This proves nothing.”

Nathan stared at her.

“It proves the dress was torn before Emma touched you.”

“You can’t see what happened inside the room.”

“No,” Claire said.

“But I can see my daughter running away from you.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

He did not look back.

Luke swiped to the next clip.

Empty hallway.

Next.

Nothing.

“Last one,” he said.

The screen flickered.

The image appeared.

It was not the hallway.

It was Adrian’s office.

Claire frowned.

“That camera was removed years ago.”

Luke shook his head.

“The main camera was. This feed is from the old baby monitor system.”

The video began.

Timestamp: 4:56 p.m.

Adrian entered.

Vanessa followed.

She was wearing the dress before it had been torn.

They closed the door.

The microphone crackled.

Then Adrian’s voice came through.

“Did you bring the papers?”

Vanessa answered.

“Yes.”

“And the dress?”

“I’ll handle the girl.”

Claire stopped breathing.

On-screen, Adrian kissed Vanessa.

Daniel muttered something under his breath.

Claire did not move.

Adrian stepped toward the monitor.

“No.”

Luke held it away.

The video continued.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“She’s going to believe her daughter over you.”

Adrian poured himself a drink.

“That’s the point.”

Claire felt Ethan’s hand touch her shoulder.

On-screen Adrian opened a brown leather folder.

He placed papers on the desk.

Vanessa leaned over them.

“What if Claire refuses to leave?”

Adrian smiled.

“Then we make her angry enough to sign something without reading it.”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“And if that fails?”

May you like

Adrian’s answer came clearly through the speaker.

“Once Claire signs, we can finally get rid of both of them.”
