Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Moretti Deal

Hazel stared at her mother’s face.

Evelyn Brooks had been dead for more than a decade.

Yet there she was.

Younger.

Terrified.

Alive inside a recording.

“If you’re watching this,” Evelyn said, “then Antonio is dead or Victor has finally made his move.”

Mateo’s jaw tightened.

Evelyn explained that she had worked in the Lombardi kitchen.

She witnessed Antonio’s attempted infant-switch scheme.

But that was not the evidence she stole.

She had found records proving Victor had begun secretly selling information to Moretti years before anyone suspected him.

Evelyn copied everything.

Antonio discovered it.

Instead of killing her, he offered protection if she disappeared.

She accepted for Hazel’s sake.

But Evelyn kept one copy.

“Where?” Hazel whispered.

The recording answered.

“In the only place my daughter would someday think to look.”

Hazel knew.

Her mother’s recipe book.

The old blue cookbook Hazel had carried for years.

The one Victor returned in the overnight bag.

Hazel’s eyes widened.

“He had it.”

Mateo understood.

“But he didn’t find the evidence.”

“Because it isn’t inside the cover.”

Hazel remembered her mother’s favorite recipe.

Apple pie.

Page 117.

Her mother always said the measurements were wrong in every cookbook except hers.

Hazel had assumed it was pride.

It was a code.

They returned to the estate.

Page 117 contained handwritten measurements.

3-1-9-4-2.

A safe combination.

The safe was hidden inside an old kitchen wall.

Hazel opened it.

Inside were microfilm copies of ledgers.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Enough evidence to prove Victor had orchestrated decades of betrayal.

Moretti had not recruited Caleb.

Victor had.

Christian had not discovered the Lombardi secret.

Victor had fed it to him.

Even Hazel’s relationship with Mateo had been monitored.

Victor feared her because Evelyn had once told him:

“My daughter remembers recipes better than anyone remembers lies.”

He assumed Evelyn had passed the evidence to Hazel.

She had.

Without Hazel knowing.

Mateo looked through the documents.

“This ends him.”

“No,” Hazel said.

He looked at her.

“This exposes him.”

Mateo understood the difference.

The old Mateo would have killed Victor.

The man Hazel needed him to become would let truth do what violence never could.

Mateo contacted federal investigators through an attorney.

Records were copied.

Witnesses protected.

Christian agreed to testify if he survived surgery.

Caleb agreed too.

For the first time, Victor had nowhere safe to go.

Then Victor called Hazel.

Not Mateo.

Hazel answered.

“You found Evelyn’s safe.”

“Yes.”

“You sound proud.”

“I’m proud of her.”

“She destroyed your life.”

“No. You did.”

Victor laughed.

“You think Mateo changed?”

“I think people choose what they become.”

“And what did he choose?”

Hazel looked across the room.

Mateo sat on the floor helping Noah assemble a toy airplane.

“My son.”

Victor went silent.

Hazel continued.

“You spent five years trying to turn Noah into an inheritance problem. Mateo sees him as a child.”

“You’re sentimental.”

“No. You’re losing.”

Victor’s voice hardened.

“Then come prove it.”

A location arrived.

The old Lombardi warehouse.

Mateo refused to let Hazel go alone.

Hazel refused to hide.

They compromised.

For once.

Victor stood inside the warehouse without visible guards.

“You brought him.”

Hazel said, “Of course.”

Victor smiled.

“That was always your weakness.”

Mateo answered.

“No. It was yours.”

Dante’s men moved into position outside.

Federal agents waited farther back.

Victor wanted the original evidence.

Hazel held a folder.

“First Caleb.”

Victor laughed.

“You still think I have him?”

Hazel froze.

Caleb was supposed to be under guard.

Mateo checked his phone.

No response.

Victor smiled.

“I learned something from Antonio. Never threaten the person your enemy expects.”

Hazel’s blood chilled.

“Where is Caleb?”

“Safe enough.”

“What do you want?”

“Your signature, Hazel.”

He produced a document.

Transfer of custodial rights.

Hazel laughed.

“No.”

“Read the final page.”

She did.

Her face changed.

It was not merely financial.

It contained an affidavit.

A statement claiming Mateo knew about Noah from birth and abandoned him.

Signing it would destroy Mateo’s legal standing in any custody dispute.

Victor wanted Hazel to separate father and son permanently.

Mateo said, “Don’t sign.”

Victor raised a detonator.

Red lights appeared around the warehouse.

Explosives.

“Then nobody leaves.”

Hazel looked at Mateo.

He looked back.

No panic.

No command.

He trusted her.

Hazel tore the document in half.

Victor pressed the detonator.

Nothing happened.

His expression changed.

Dante stepped from the shadows.

“You really should stop hiring men who like money more than you.”

Victor reached for his gun.

Federal agents entered.

“Drop it!”

Victor backed away.

Then smiled.

“You think this is over?”

Mateo said nothing.

Victor looked directly at Hazel.

“Ask Mateo why he really stopped searching after three years.”

Hazel’s eyes moved to Mateo.

Victor laughed.

“He never told you, did he?”

Hazel whispered, “Told me what?”

Victor was dragged away.

May you like

Mateo remained silent.

And Hazel realized Victor had finally found a secret Mateo was still keeping.
