Chapter 11 - The Night They Took Her Son

Hazel stopped breathing.
“Noah.”
Dante called immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Mateo drove.
Hazel had never seen him afraid like this.
Not angry.
Afraid.
They reached the restaurant in twelve minutes.
The front door stood open.
Tables overturned.
Upstairs, Noah’s room was empty.
His blanket lay on the floor.
Hazel picked it up.
“No.”
Mateo checked the window.
No forced entry.
Then Hazel saw a note.
MOM, I WENT WITH UNCLE CALEB.
Her knees weakened.
Mateo caught her.
“That isn’t Caleb.”
“I know.”
Someone had convinced Noah it was.
Or Noah had been forced to write it.
The restaurant camera revealed the truth.
A man wearing Caleb’s coat entered with his face hidden.
Noah hesitated.
Then followed after the man showed him something.
“What?” Hazel whispered.
Mateo enlarged the frame.
A photograph.
Hazel and Caleb as children.
Something only family should possess.
Claudia arrived.
She saw the image.
“That photograph belonged to Christian.”
Hazel turned.
“How?”
“Evelyn gave me copies years ago. Christian took them after he learned about the Lombardis.”
“Then Christian took Noah.”
Mateo shook his head.
“Christian was shot.”
“Not dead.”
“No.”
They found Christian at the hospital.
Gone.
He had left against medical advice.
A nurse remembered a black sedan.
Victor had picked him up.
The pieces aligned.
Christian believed Victor had lied.
But blood and resentment could still be manipulated.
Victor had offered him something.
Mateo knew what.
Recognition.
Not money.
A name.
The thing Christian had chased his entire life.
They traced the sedan to an industrial district.
Hazel insisted on coming.
Mateo did not argue.
Inside an abandoned printing plant, they found Caleb.
Alive.
Samuel too.
But Noah was not there.
Caleb told them Victor had separated Christian from the others.
“He promised Christian a DNA result proving Antonio was his father.”
“It’s fake,” Claudia said.
“I know.”
“But Christian doesn’t.”
Mateo looked at Samuel.
“Where would Victor take him?”
Samuel whispered, “The courthouse archive.”
“Why?”
“The original trust.”
Victor needed Christian to believe the lie long enough to challenge Mateo publicly.
Chaos would freeze the assets.
Then Victor could exploit emergency trustee provisions.
But Noah?
Hazel understood.
“He’s proof.”
If Mateo acknowledged Noah publicly, Christian’s claim collapsed.
Unless Christian had Noah.
They reached the courthouse annex after midnight.
Victor’s men were already inside.
Mateo and Dante moved through the lower level.
Hazel stayed with Caleb.
Then she heard crying.
Noah.
She ran.
“Hazel!” Caleb shouted.
She followed the sound into the records room.
Noah sat in a chair.
Alone.
Hazel rushed to him.
“Mom!”
She hugged him.
“Did they hurt you?”
“No.”
“Where’s the man who brought you?”
Noah pointed.
“Behind there.”
Hazel turned.
Christian stepped from behind the shelving.
Gun lowered.
Not aimed.
“I wasn’t going to hurt him.”
Hazel stood between them.
“You kidnapped my son.”
“Victor said Mateo killed my father.”
“Antonio wasn’t your father.”
Christian’s face twisted.
“That’s what they want me to believe.”
“Your mother is alive.”
He froze.
“Claudia?”
“Yes.”
“She abandoned me.”
“No. She was driven away.”
Christian’s hand trembled.
Hazel saw a man who had spent his entire life feeding an old wound.
“You don’t have to do this.”
“He owes me.”
“Maybe Mateo’s father did. Mateo doesn’t.”
Christian looked at Noah.
“Then why does his son get everything?”
Hazel answered quietly.
“He doesn’t.”
Christian frowned.
“My son gets a father who is trying to be better. That’s what he gets.”
Footsteps approached.
Victor appeared.
His gun was raised.
Christian turned.
“You said we were alone.”
Victor smiled.
“You were useful when you believed things.”
Christian’s face changed.
Victor fired.
Hazel pulled Noah down.
Christian fell.
Mateo burst through the doorway.
Gunfire exploded.
Shelves shattered.
Victor escaped through a side exit.
Mateo reached Hazel.
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“Noah?”
“I’m okay.”
Mateo pulled his son against him.
Noah began sobbing.
Mateo closed his eyes.
Hazel saw tears on his face.
Then Christian groaned.
Claudia arrived moments later.
She fell beside her son.
Christian looked up at her.
“Mom?”
Claudia took his hand.
“Yes.”
He began crying like a child.
“I thought you left me.”
“Never.”
Christian reached inside his coat.
He removed a flash drive.
“Victor’s files.”
Mateo took it.
“What’s on it?”
Christian looked at Hazel.
“The truth about why Victor chose your family.”
Hazel frowned.
“My family?”
Christian nodded weakly.
“Your mother didn’t just witness Antonio’s crime.”
He struggled for breath.
“She stole something from him.”
Hazel leaned closer.
“What?”
Christian whispered one word.
“Evidence.”
Then the building alarm began screaming.
On Mateo’s phone, the flash drive opened automatically.
A video appeared.

Hazel’s dead mother looked directly into the camera.
And said, “Hazel, if you are seeing this, Mateo Lombardi has finally learned who betrayed us.”
