Chapter 3 - Claire’s Last Letter

Ethan reached 317 Briarwood Lane before dawn.

The building was an abandoned music school.

Claire's key opened a basement room.

Inside stood two cribs.

Two boxes.

And dozens of letters.

Every envelope carried a date.

Claire had documented everything.

Threats.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Copies of messages.

Ethan read until his hands shook.

Then he found Brooke's name.

Claire had met Brooke months before returning to Ethan.

Brooke had discovered the pregnancy first.

She offered Claire money.

Claire refused.

Then the threats began.

But another name appeared repeatedly.

M.C.

Martin Caldwell.

Brooke's father.

Claire believed Martin wanted control of Hale Harbor Group after Brooke married Ethan.

The twins threatened that plan because Ethan had quietly revised his estate structure after learning about them.

But Ethan hadn't told Brooke that.

Someone else had.

Only three people knew.

His attorney.

His accountant.

And Caleb.

Ethan slowly looked toward the basement stairs.

Caleb had not arrived.

His phone was still unreachable.

Then Ethan found a sealed envelope.

FOR HANNAH.

He didn't open it.

Instead he photographed everything.

When he returned home, Hannah was waiting.

He handed her the envelope.

She read Claire's letter silently.

Then she began crying.

“What does it say?”

Hannah looked up.

“She knew she might die.”

Ethan's chest tightened.

“She said if anything happened during childbirth, I was supposed to protect the boys until you understood the truth.”

“Why didn't she trust me?”

“She did.”

“Then why all this secrecy?”

“Because she thought somebody near you was feeding Brooke information.”

Ethan thought of the three people.

Then Hannah handed him the letter.

Claire had written one final sentence beneath her signature.

The person betraying Ethan is someone he calls family.

Caleb had been with Ethan since he was twenty-three.

More than an employee.

More than a friend.

Family.

Ethan refused to believe it.

Until he checked the security archive.

The night Claire arrived at the estate, Caleb had disabled one exterior camera for seventeen minutes.

Ethan stared at the record.

At 7:14 that morning, the front door opened downstairs.

Caleb entered.

Ethan met him in the library.

“Where were you?”

“Looking for answers.”

“You disappeared.”

“My phone died.”

Ethan watched him.

“Did you know Claire before she came back?”

Caleb went still.

One second.

That was all Ethan needed.

“Yes,” Caleb finally said.

“How?”

“She contacted me.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

Rage exploded through Ethan.

“You lied to me.”

“I was protecting her.”

“From whom?”

“I didn't know.”

“You disabled my camera.”

“She asked me to.”

“Why?”

Caleb looked toward the closed library door.

“Because she needed to enter without Brooke knowing.”

Ethan stared.

“Brooke wasn't living here then.”

“No.”

Caleb's face hardened.

“But somebody inside this house was reporting to her.”

“Who?”

“I never found out.”

Ethan thought of Claire's sentence.

Someone he calls family.

“You?”

Caleb looked wounded.

“No.”

“Prove it.”

“I can.”

He reached inside his coat.

Before he could remove anything, a scream came from upstairs.

Hannah.

Both men ran.

They found her in Ethan's bedroom.

The bassinets were empty.

Brooke was gone.

On Ethan's pillow lay the emergency placement document.

Across it someone had written four words in black ink.

YOU WAITED TOO LONG.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

May you like

The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen since Claire died.

CLAIRE BENNETT.
