Hannah laughed because the alternative was collapsing.
“That isn't possible.”
Margaret cried.
“It is.”
Years earlier, after Thomas disappeared, he and Margaret had lived under false identities while gathering evidence against Daniel.
They had become close.
Too close.
Hannah was their daughter.
Claire had been Hannah's half sister.
Thomas had never known Margaret was pregnant.
Margaret kept the secret because Daniel was already hunting them.
Ethan stared at Hannah.

Claire's sister.
The woman protecting his sons.
His half sister.
Thomas looked devastated.
“You should have told me.”
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
“And instead she grew up believing her father didn't want her.”
Hannah backed away.
“I need air.”
Ethan followed her.
Outside, Hannah finally broke.
“I came here to protect Claire's babies. I didn't come here to become part of your family.”
“You don't have to become anything tonight.”
She looked at him.
“You believe her?”
“I believe DNA tests.”
Despite everything, Hannah laughed.
“So practical.”
“I've had a difficult month.”
That made her laugh harder.
Then she cried.
Ethan hugged her.
It was awkward.
Unexpected.
Real.
Three days later DNA confirmed it.
Hannah Price was Thomas Hale's daughter.
Ethan's half sister.
The discovery changed the trust structure, but Ethan cared less about the money than everyone expected.
He had spent weeks watching people destroy themselves over inheritance.
He was beginning to understand how little wealth mattered compared with who stayed beside a crib at three in the morning.
Brooke accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify against Daniel and Richard.
Ethan visited her once more.
“Why?” she asked.
“Why what?”
“Why aren't you trying to destroy me?”
“I don't need to.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I was awful to those boys.”
“Yes.”
“I keep hearing myself say it.”
“You should.”
Tears appeared.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Ethan considered the question.
“I hope someday I stop being angry. That's not the same thing.”
Brooke nodded.
It was the last time they saw each other.
Daniel and Richard faced multiple charges involving kidnapping, fraud, coercion, and conspiracy.
The financial investigation widened.
But one question remained.
Claire's files contained a reference to a second ledger.
Without it, prosecutors could prove the kidnapping but not decades of financial crimes.
Margaret knew where it was.
The old Hale family chapel.
Ethan, Hannah, Thomas, and Caleb went together.
Behind a loose stone beneath the altar they found a metal box.
Inside were account ledgers.
Photographs.
Letters.
And an envelope addressed to Ethan.
He opened it.
The handwriting belonged to Claire.

Ethan stopped reading.
Hannah noticed.
“What?”
His hands trembled.
He continued.
The truth is in their original birth records.
Not the copies you were given.
Ask who signed as witness.
Ethan looked up.
Thomas whispered, “Who signed?”
