Chapter 6 - The Last Order

The jet landed hard.
Not crashed.
Landed.
That told Adrian something important.
Julian still needed them alive.
For now.
The private runway stretched beside a sprawling estate hidden among California hills.
Adrian remembered it vaguely from childhood.
His father had brought him there twice.
He remembered rifles.
Whiskey.
Men speaking behind closed doors.
He remembered Julian chasing him through dry grass.
He did not remember Elias.
That absence now felt sinister.
The jet door opened.
Nobody stood outside.
Adrian checked his weapon.
Elias did the same.
Mara stared at both men.
“Tell me the plan.”
Adrian answered.
“You stay between us.”
“That’s not a plan.”
“It’s the part you need.”
She gave him a look.
Elias said, “You two really were married.”
Mara sighed.
They crossed the runway.
The estate door stood open.
Inside, music played.
An old jazz recording.
Their father’s favorite.
Adrian hated it instantly.
“Julian always was theatrical,” Elias said.
They entered.
The first room was empty.
The second contained photographs.
Hundreds.
Adrian as a child.
Julian.
Their mother.
Elias.
Mara.
Photographs of Mara from the last three months.
Sleeping in shelters.
Buying crackers.
Leaving clinics.
Crying on a bus.
Adrian’s face tightened.
Mara stared.
Her entire nightmare had been documented.
On the far wall was a photograph from their wedding.
A red X had been drawn over Adrian.
Another over Mara.
A circle around her stomach.
Adrian tore it down.
“Don’t,” Mara said.
He looked at her.
“Keep it.”
“Why?”
“Evidence.”
He handed it to Elias.
Adrian’s phone rang.
Julian.
“Where are you?”
“Upstairs.”
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
“Come down.”
“No.”
“Afraid?”
Julian laughed.
“Of you? Never.”
“Then stop hiding.”
“I spent my whole life hiding behind you.”
His voice sharpened.
“Come see what that cost me.”
The line disconnected.
They climbed.
At the end of the hallway stood a locked room.
Adrian kicked it open.
Daniel Kessler sat inside.
Alive.
Bruised.
Tied to a chair.
Mara rushed forward.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
Relief flooded his face.
“You’re alive.”
“Thanks partly to you.”
Elias cut the ropes.
Daniel stood unsteadily.
“Julian?”
“Upstairs.”
“Don’t go.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Why?”
“He wants all three brothers together.”
Elias frowned.
“For what?”
Daniel stared.
“The trust.”
Adrian held up the copies.
“He has the original.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“The original trust was never paper.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
“Your father recorded a biometric transfer protocol.”
Elias went still.
“Bloodline authentication.”
Daniel nodded.
“He designed a failsafe. If succession was contested, biological identity could be established using all surviving claimants.”
Mara understood.
“He needs their blood.”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Why?”
“Because Julian thinks he can manipulate the test.”
Elias laughed once.
“How?”
“He has samples from your father.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“If Julian can replace his sample with stored paternal DNA, the system will recognize him as direct lineage.”
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
“He becomes legally Vale.”
“Yes.”
“And if we’re dead afterward…”
“No contradiction remains.”
A clap sounded above.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Julian appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Well done.”
He held a pistol.
Two men stood behind him.
Luca Mercer was one of them.
Adrian stared.
Luca looked ashamed.
Mara whispered, “You said he was helping us.”
Julian smiled.
“He was.”
Adrian’s face became unreadable.
“Luca?”
Luca looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For letting you believe I could save both sides.”
Julian rolled his eyes.
“Always sentimental.”
Adrian looked at Luca carefully.
Something in his posture was wrong.
His right hand was loose.
His left shoulder tense.
A signal.
Adrian knew Luca’s combat habits.
Luca was not aiming at Adrian.
He was waiting.
Julian gestured.
“Upstairs.”
Nobody moved.
Julian pointed the gun toward Mara.
Adrian stepped instantly.
“Don’t.”
Julian smiled.
“There it is.”
His leverage.
Always Mara.
Adrian slowly raised his hands.
“We go.”
They entered the laboratory room upstairs.
Old equipment had been modernized.
Three collection stations waited.
Julian pointed at Elias.
“You first.”
Elias approached.
A technician drew blood.
Then Adrian.
Then Julian.
Julian handed his vial to the technician.
Adrian watched.
Everything seemed legitimate.
Too legitimate.
“Where is Father’s sample?” Adrian asked.
Julian smiled.
“You think I’d tell you?”
The machine processed.
Minutes passed.
Mara stood beside Daniel.
Her heart pounded.
Adrian caught her eye.
A silent message.
Trust me.
She almost laughed at the irony.
Then the machine beeped.
Three results appeared.
ELIAS VALE: BIOLOGICAL MATCH.
ADRIAN VALE: BIOLOGICAL MATCH.
JULIAN VALE: BIOLOGICAL MATCH.
Julian smiled.
“Finally.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“You cheated.”
“History only remembers results.”
Julian raised the gun.
“Now it remembers me.”
Luca moved.
Fast.
His elbow struck Julian’s wrist.
The shot went wide.
Adrian lunged.
Elias tackled one guard.
Daniel pulled Mara down.
The room exploded into motion.
A second shot.
Glass shattered.
Julian struck Luca across the face.
Adrian grabbed Julian’s gun hand.
The brothers slammed into a table.
Julian laughed through clenched teeth.
“You always thought you were stronger.”
Adrian twisted his wrist.
The gun fell.
“Not always.”
He drove Julian backward.
“But today?”
Adrian pinned him against the wall.
“Yes.”
Luca disarmed the second guard.
Elias stood over the first.
Silence returned.
Julian breathed hard.
Then smiled.
“You still lose.”
Adrian frowned.
Julian looked toward Mara.
A red light blinked beneath the table.
Timer.
00:47.
Mara saw it.
“Adrian.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel went pale.
“Bomb.”
Julian laughed.
“If I don’t leave, nobody does.”
Adrian released him.
“Exit?”
Elias pointed.
“Back stairs.”
They ran.
Mara tried.
Pain seized her abdomen.
She stopped.
Adrian turned.
“Mara?”
She doubled over.
“No.”
His face changed.
Another contraction.
The injection.
Stress.
Adrian lifted her.
“Go!”
Thirty seconds.
They raced downstairs.
Julian ran with them.
Twenty.
Outside.
Across the terrace.
Ten.
Adrian carried Mara behind a stone retaining wall.
Elias dragged Daniel.
Luca shoved Julian forward.
Three.
Two.
One.
The estate erupted.
Windows blew outward.
Fire climbed through the roof.
The shockwave shook the ground.
Adrian curled over Mara.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Mara whispered.
“Adrian.”
“I’m here.”
“Something’s wrong.”
He pulled back.
Her face was white.
Her pants were wet.
Not rain.
Blood.
Adrian went still.
“No.”
Mara gripped his shirt.
“The baby.”
He lifted her.
“Luca!”
Luca ran toward the vehicles.
Julian suddenly broke free.
Elias shouted.
Adrian looked back.
Julian sprinted toward the burning estate.
Not away.
Toward it.
Daniel stared.
“What is he doing?”
Julian disappeared inside the flames.
Adrian did not follow.
Mara cried out in his arms.
He carried her to the SUV.
They sped toward the nearest hospital.
Behind them, the estate burned.
Twenty minutes later, Adrian stood outside an emergency operating room with Mara’s blood on his hands.
A doctor rushed through the doors.
Adrian stopped him.
“My wife.”
The doctor looked at him.
“Are you the husband?”
Adrian hesitated.
Legally, no.
In every way that mattered, he did not know anymore.
“I’m the father.”
The doctor nodded.
“We’re doing everything we can.”
“For both?”
“Yes.”
The doors closed.
Adrian sat for the first time.
Elias lowered himself beside him.
Daniel stood near the window.
Luca arrived ten minutes later.
His face was cut.
His suit burned at one shoulder.
Adrian looked up.
“Julian?”
Luca shook his head.
“No body.”
Adrian stared.
“The house collapsed.”
“Then he’s dead.”
Luca said nothing.
Adrian understood.
No body.
No certainty.
An hour passed.
Then another.
Finally, the surgeon emerged.
Adrian stood.
“How are they?”
“Mara is stable.”
He closed his eyes.
“And the baby?”
The surgeon paused.
Adrian stopped breathing.
“The heartbeat is there.”
His knees almost gave out.
“But?”
“She needs complete rest. No travel. No stress. We’ve stopped the contractions.”
Adrian nodded.
“Thank you.”
The doctor handed him a sealed plastic bag.
“We found this taped beneath her clothing.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“It appears someone placed it there before she arrived.”
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Luca looked at it.
“Julian?”
Adrian took it.
“No.”
A handwritten label covered one side.
FOR ADRIAN—IF MARA SURVIVES.
The handwriting belonged to Daniel.
Adrian turned.
Daniel Kessler was no longer by the window.
The hallway door stood open.
He was gone.
Adrian inserted the memory card into his phone.
One video file appeared.
He pressed play.
Daniel’s face filled the screen.
“If you are seeing this, Mara lived.”
Adrian stared.
Daniel continued.
“And if Mara lived, Julian will come for the child one final time.”
The video cut.
A second file appeared automatically.
A map.
Chicago.
Adrian’s mansion.
And a timestamp.
Three days from now.
12:17 a.m.
May you like
Beneath it were five words.
THAT IS WHEN HE RETURNS.
