Chapter 3 - The Dead Man’s Bargain

Adrian did not turn the car around.
Instead, he ordered the convoy into an underground parking structure three blocks away and switched vehicles.
Mara watched him work.
No panic.
No wasted movement.
He called people using numbers she had never seen.
He issued instructions in clipped phrases.
“Close the bridges.”
“Freeze private aircraft.”
“Pull traffic cameras.”
“Find Ruth.”
Each command moved through Chicago like electricity.
This was the Adrian she had once feared before she loved him.
Not because he was loud.
Adrian Vale was most dangerous when he became quiet.
Mara sat in the passenger seat of an unmarked sedan while he drove.
“You think Daniel has Ruth.”
“I think someone wants me to.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“You sound certain now.”
“I recognized the breathing.”
She frowned.
“The breathing?”
“The voicemail before his supposed accident.”
Adrian’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“He breathed the same way tonight.”
Mara looked out at the sleeping city.
“You knew him that well?”
“He had a collapsed lung from a shooting ten years ago. Slight whistle when he inhaled.”
“And nobody checked the body?”
“Closed casket.”
“Why?”
“Fire.”
Mara turned toward him.
“Convenient.”
“Yes.”
The storage facility stood near an abandoned rail yard.
They arrived at 2:04 a.m.
Adrian parked three blocks away.
Mara stared at the dark warehouse.
“You said alone.”
“I lied.”
She looked at him.
“Again?”
“Professionally this time.”
Despite herself, Mara almost laughed.
Almost.
Adrian handed her a small transmitter.
“If anything happens, press this.”
“What happens?”
“Half the Chicago Police Department gets an anonymous report of armed trafficking activity at this address.”
She stared at him.
“You can do that?”
“I just did.”
He opened the door.
Mara followed.
Inside the warehouse, a single light burned.
A folding table stood in the center.
On it sat a laptop.
Nothing else.
Adrian approached first.
“Mara, stay behind me.”
She did.
The laptop screen lit automatically.
A video began.
Daniel Kessler appeared.
Alive.
Older.
Bearded.
Terrified.
Mara gasped.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“If Adrian is watching this, then the plan failed.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“What plan?”
Daniel continued.
“Three months ago, I discovered unauthorized transfers from Vale accounts. At first I believed it was theft. Then I found payments tied to surveillance of Mara.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“I tried to warn Adrian. I was intercepted.”
Daniel looked off camera.
Someone was in the room with him when he recorded the video.
“I faked my death because staying alive openly would have killed Mara faster.”
Mara whispered, “Why?”
The recording continued.
“Whoever is behind this does not want Adrian’s money.”
Adrian frowned.
“They want his empire.”
Daniel held up a folder.
“After Adrian divorced Mara, the conspirators expected him to become reckless. Isolated. Easier to remove.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
His face gave nothing away.
Daniel continued.
“But Mara became pregnant.”
His voice dropped.
“That changed everything.”
The video flickered.
“Under Vale family trust rules, Adrian’s direct heir inherits controlling authority if Adrian dies.”
Mara turned.
“What?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
He had never told her.
The Vale empire was not only criminal operations.
It included legitimate logistics companies, properties, investment firms, shipping contracts, and a private trust worth more than two billion dollars.
If Adrian died without an heir, control transferred to Julian.
If Adrian had a child…
Julian inherited nothing.
Mara understood.
“The baby.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
Daniel continued.
“The conspirators do not need Mara dead because she is Adrian’s ex-wife.”
He leaned toward the camera.
“They need the child dead because the child replaces someone in the succession.”
Mara’s hand moved over her belly.
Adrian looked at her.
Julian.
Everything pointed toward Julian.
Daniel’s image froze.
Then the screen went black.
Words appeared.
ASK YOUR BROTHER ABOUT MONTEREY.
Adrian stared.
Mara whispered, “What is Monterey?”
“A house.”
“Whose?”
“My father’s.”
He had not thought about it in years.
A coastal property in California.
Their father had used it for private meetings.
After his death, Julian had kept the deed.
Mara looked around.
“Where is Daniel?”
“I don’t know.”
A noise came from behind the warehouse wall.
Adrian drew a pistol.
“Mara.”
“I heard it.”
Another sound.
A scrape.
They followed it toward a locked office.
Adrian kicked the door open.
Mrs. Bellamy sat inside.
Not tied.
Not injured.
Holding a gun.
Mara stared.
“Ruth?”
Mrs. Bellamy lowered the weapon.
“Thank God.”
Adrian looked around.
“You were never kidnapped.”
“No.”
“The photo?”
“Staged.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Mrs. Bellamy raised both hands.
“Daniel told me to.”
Mara could not speak.
“You know he’s alive?” Adrian asked.
“For two months.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You lied to me.”
Mrs. Bellamy looked at him with sadness.
“You taught everyone around you that lying was sometimes love.”
That landed.
Adrian said nothing.
Mrs. Bellamy approached Mara.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
“You knew?”
“I knew someone was helping you.”
“Was it you?”
“Sometimes.”
Mara stared.
“The motel fire alarm?”
“Yes.”
“The police car outside Joliet?”
“Daniel.”
“The canceled bus?”
“No.”
Mrs. Bellamy’s face darkened.
“That was them.”
“Who?”
She looked at Adrian.
“Julian.”
Silence.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Proof.”
Mrs. Bellamy handed him a flash drive.
“Daniel collected everything.”
Adrian looked at it.
“Where is he?”
“Gone.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“He stopped telling me after Victor found one of our drop sites.”
Adrian took the flash drive.
Mara stared at Mrs. Bellamy.
“Why didn’t Daniel come to Adrian?”
“Because he didn’t know who Adrian could trust.”
Mrs. Bellamy looked toward him.
“And neither do I.”
Adrian understood the accusation.
Luca.
His brother.
His lieutenants.
His entire structure.
Every layer might be compromised.
He inserted the flash drive into the laptop.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Bank transfers.
Internal orders.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
And one folder labeled MONTEREY.
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a scanned document dated seventeen years earlier.
A trust amendment.
His father’s signature.
Adrian read it once.
Then again.
Mara watched his face.
“What?”
He did not answer.
“Adrian.”
He looked at Mrs. Bellamy.
“Did you know?”
She shook her head.
“Know what?”
Adrian turned the screen.
The document stated that if Adrian Vale ever married and produced a direct heir, the Vale trust would become permanently locked to Adrian’s bloodline.
Julian would lose not only future control.
He would lose access immediately.
Mara frowned.
“But you were married for three years.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t this happen already?”
“Because the heir had to be confirmed.”
“The pregnancy.”
“Yes.”
Mara’s face went pale.
“So the moment someone learned I was pregnant…”
“Julian had everything to lose.”
A car door slammed outside.
Adrian drew his weapon.
Mrs. Bellamy turned off the light.
Footsteps approached.
Several.
Mara pressed the transmitter.
Nothing happened.
She looked down.
The light was dead.
Adrian checked his phone.
No signal.
Jammed.
The warehouse doors opened.
Luca Mercer walked inside.
Behind him came six armed men.
Adrian raised his pistol.
Luca stopped ten feet away.
“Put it down.”
Adrian’s voice was cold.
“You should have stayed at the mansion.”
“You should have trusted me.”
Mara moved behind Adrian.
Luca noticed.
“Mrs. Vale.”
“Don’t call me that.”
He almost smiled.
“Fair.”
Adrian aimed at his chest.
“Were you working with Julian?”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To keep you alive.”
“With six guns?”
“Because your brother is coming.”
Adrian stared.
Luca continued.
“And he thinks I’m still working for him.”
Mrs. Bellamy whispered, “Can we trust him?”
Adrian never looked away from Luca.
“No.”
Luca nodded.
“Good.”
He reached slowly into his coat.
Adrian cocked the weapon.
“Careful.”
Luca removed a phone and tossed it across the concrete.
The screen showed a live video feed.
Julian Vale sat inside Adrian’s study.
He held a glass of whiskey.
And beside him stood Dr. Harris.
Mara froze.
Julian looked into the camera and smiled.
“Hello, brother.”
Adrian picked up the phone.
Julian continued.
“I’ve spent years waiting for you to make one mistake.”
His eyes shifted toward Mara.
“You finally made two.”
Mara’s hand covered her belly.
Adrian’s voice became almost inaudible.
“You touch her—”
Julian laughed.
“I already did.”
Mara stopped breathing.
Julian raised a medical file.
Her medical file.
Then Dr. Harris stepped closer to the camera.
His face was gray.
“I’m sorry, Mara.”
She stared.
Dr. Harris swallowed.
“The injection I gave you tonight…”
Adrian went completely still.
Mara looked down at her arm.
A tiny bandage covered the injection site.
May you like
Dr. Harris whispered:
“It wasn’t vitamins.”
