Chapter 13 - The Last Betrayal

Isabella stepped out holding Grace.
Kate rushed forward.
“What are you doing?”
“Saving her.”
Luciano moved between them.
“Give Kate the baby.”
Isabella did.
Immediately.
That surprised him.
Grace was warm, sleeping, safe.
Kate held her tightly.
“Why did you remove her?”
“Because Antonio wasn't working alone.”
Luciano stared.
“Who?”
Isabella looked toward Vittorio.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Vittorio did not deny it.
Luciano’s face emptied.
Kate whispered, “Vittorio?”
Vittorio sat slowly.
“I helped Antonio establish the shipping network forty years ago.”
Luciano stared at his father.
“You said he infiltrated us.”
“He did. Later.”
“You built it together.”
“Yes.”
“People died.”
“Yes.”
“Carlo?”
Vittorio’s voice broke.
“That was when I tried to end it.”
Luciano turned away.
Every truth had another lie beneath it.
Vittorio continued.
“Carlo discovered what I had done. Antonio killed him. I replaced him with Adrian because Adrian wanted revenge against Antonio as much as I did.”
Adrian entered.
“So now you know.”
Luciano looked at him.
“You agreed to pretend to be my brother.”
“I thought it would last months.”
“It lasted eight years.”
“I became attached.”
“To what?”
Adrian looked at Luciano.
“To having a brother.”
The answer silenced him.
Kate held Grace.
“Enough.”
Everyone looked at her.
“No more dead people returning. No more secret identities. No more deciding that lies become acceptable if you call them protection.”
Luciano almost smiled.
Kate looked at Vittorio.
“You tell the authorities everything.”
Vittorio nodded.
“All of it.”
“And you accept whatever happens.”
“Yes.”
Isabella whispered, “Vittorio—”
“No.”
Vittorio looked at his wife.
“She’s right.”
Luciano studied his father.
For the first time, Vittorio seemed smaller than the legend surrounding him.
Just an old man confronting the consequences of choices made when he believed power could solve everything.
Federal agents arrived before sunrise.
Vittorio surrendered.
Antonio remained in custody.
Margaret agreed to cooperate.
Elena provided decades of records.
Adrian gave investigators access to accounts he had secretly tracked.
By morning, the empire Luciano inherited had begun to collapse.
He sat beside Kate in the neonatal room.
Grace slept beneath warm lights.
“You’re losing everything,” Kate said.
“No.”
“Your companies may be seized.”
“Some.”
“Your father is going to prison.”
“Probably.”
“Your family name will be everywhere.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“And you're calm.”
Luciano touched Grace’s tiny hand.
“I spent years believing these things were my life.”
“And now?”
He looked at Kate.
“They were things around my life.”
Her eyes filled.
“Don't say things like that when I’m hormonal.”
“You’ve always cried when angry.”
“I do not.”
“You cried at our wedding.”
“Because you stepped on my dress.”
“I apologized.”
“You blamed the tailor.”
“The train was excessive.”
She laughed.
The sound felt miraculous.
Then her smile faded.
“What happens to us?”
Luciano sat back.
“That depends on you.”
“Not us?”
“I know what I want.”
“What?”
“You.”
Her breath caught.
“And Grace. And mornings where nobody is shooting at anyone. Perhaps breakfast.”
“Ambitious.”
“I’m simplifying.”
Kate looked at him for a long moment.
“I still don't trust you completely.”
“I know.”
“I still remember why I left.”
“So do I.”
“And tearing up divorce papers isn't romantic if the other person might still want the divorce.”
Luciano nodded.
“I know that too.”
She studied him.
“You've changed.”
“No.”
Kate frowned.
“I’m trying to.”
That answer mattered more.
Kate reached through the incubator opening.
Luciano placed his hand beside hers.
Grace’s tiny fingers wrapped around both.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Daniel entered.
“Luciano.”
“What?”
“There’s one problem.”
“Of course there is.”
“The original trust.”
“What about it?”
“It wasn't in the evidence package.”
Luciano stood.
“Then where is it?”
Daniel held up security footage.
Someone had entered Hawthorne Ridge while they were at Pier 17.
A figure walked directly to Eleanor’s hidden cabinet.
The person knew exactly where to look.
Kate leaned closer.
The figure turned toward the camera.
Her face became visible.
Kate stopped breathing.
“That’s impossible.”
Luciano stared.
The woman on the screen looked almost exactly like Katherine.
May you like
Then Kate whispered:
“My mother.”
