Chapter 12 - The Secret Katherine Had Protected

Kate refused to hide.
Luciano refused to use her as bait.
They argued for ten minutes.
Then Kate said the sentence that ended it.
“You don't get to rebuild our marriage by making my decisions again.”
Luciano fell silent.
She was right.
He hated it.
But she was right.
“What do you want?”
“To go.”
“Knowing the danger?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Then we go together.”
That mattered more than Kate expected.
No command.
No locked room.
No guards assigned without consent.
A choice.
At Pier 17, they found the warehouse empty.
Vittorio, Adrian, Elena, and Daniel remained concealed nearby.
Kate carried the original trust.
Luciano carried nothing visible.
“Where?” Kate whispered.
A light turned on.
Margaret’s recovered memory had changed everything.
She remembered Katherine’s birth.
Her mother had arrived under another name.
Celia Vescari.
Elena’s older sister.
Kate was a Vescari by blood.
Eleanor Hawthorne had adopted her to keep her safe.
That meant Katherine’s marriage to Luciano had united the two families Adrian’s enemies had spent decades keeping apart.
A speaker crackled.
“Welcome home, Katherine.”
A man stepped from the shadows.
Luciano recognized him from old photographs.
Antonio Vescari.
Elena’s father.
The supposedly dead architect of everything.
Kate stared.
“You’re my grandfather.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened me.”
“I protected you.”
Luciano almost laughed.
The same poisoned word every older generation used.
Kate’s voice remained calm.
“You drugged me into premature labor.”
“No. Margaret’s replacements did.”
Margaret had confessed to switching the medication under Elena’s manipulation, but even Elena had believed she was preventing complications.
Layers of lies.
Antonio had designed them all.
“Why?” Kate asked.
“Because Grace gives us everything.”
“She gives you nothing.”
“She gives our blood control of the Aruri assets.”
Kate finally understood.
Because she was a Vescari and Luciano an Aruri, Grace satisfied both sides of the altered succession language.
Antonio could challenge control through Katherine.
“You arranged our marriage?”
“No.”
For the first time, Antonio looked genuinely irritated.
“That was the one thing I did not arrange.”
Luciano glanced at Kate.
They had met by accident at a charity auction four years earlier.
Their love had ruined a plan decades in the making.
Antonio continued.
“When you married him, I adapted.”
“You tried to destroy us.”
“I separated you.”
“Why?”
“Because together you became impossible to control.”
Kate looked at Luciano.
Seven months of pain.
Thirty-seven erased calls.
Threats.
Fear.
All because somebody understood that their strongest position was together.
Antonio held out his hand.
“The trust.”
Kate raised it.
Then tore it in half.
Antonio’s face changed.
“You foolish girl.”
Again.
Again.
She tore until pieces fell across the concrete.
“There.”
Antonio stared.
“You think paper changes ownership?”
“No.”
Kate smiled faintly.
“But you do.”
Police lights suddenly illuminated the warehouse windows.
Antonio turned.
Luciano said, “The document you asked for wasn't the original.”
Antonio’s face went blank.
“The original is already with federal prosecutors.”
Vittorio emerged.
“So are thirty years of shipping records.”
Antonio reached inside his coat.
Luciano moved in front of Kate.
A shot exploded.
Kate screamed.
Luciano staggered.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Antonio ran.
Daniel and Adrian pursued him.
Kate caught Luciano as he fell.
“No.”
“I'm fine.”
“You’ve been shot!”
“Technically grazed.”
“Luciano!”
He looked at her.
Even in pain, he smiled.
“You called me Luciano instead of an idiot.”
“You are an idiot.”
“Better.”
Sirens surrounded the warehouse.
Antonio was captured at the pier.
For the first time in decades, there was nowhere left to run.
But when Kate and Luciano returned to the hospital, Grace’s incubator was empty.
Kate stopped.
“Where is my daughter?”
A nurse looked confused.
“Mrs. Aruri, your husband authorized the transfer.”
Kate slowly turned toward Luciano.
His face went cold.
May you like
“I authorized nothing.”
Then the elevator doors opened behind them.
