Chapter 6 - The Bride Who Refused to Be Broken

"Adrian!"

Hannah's voice echoed through the warehouse.

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

The bullet had entered beneath Adrian's ribs.

There was blood.

Too much blood.

Hannah rode in the ambulance despite everyone telling her not to.

At the hospital, surgeons took him away.

She sat beside Evelyn in a private waiting room.

For three hours neither spoke.

Claire had been rescued.

Derek sat with his sister on another floor.

Vittorio had escaped.

Again.

At four in the morning, a surgeon entered.

Hannah stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

"Mr. Moretti is stable."

Her knees nearly gave out.

"The bullet missed his liver by less than an inch."

"Can I see him?"

"In a little while."

Evelyn touched Hannah's arm.

"Honey."

Hannah turned.

Three years of grief sat between them.

"You owe me the truth."

Evelyn nodded.

"All of it."

They talked until sunrise.

Evelyn told Hannah about Vittorio.

They met when Evelyn was twenty-three.

She was an accountant.

He was a young businessman trying to move family money into legitimate industries.

They loved each other once.

Intensely.

Then Evelyn discovered what Vittorio was willing to do to maintain power.

She left him.

His younger brother Lorenzo helped her escape.

Years later, Evelyn and Lorenzo fell in love.

Margaret was born.

Vittorio publicly claimed involvement in Margaret's life because enemies were searching for Lorenzo's descendants.

It was protection.

At first.

Then Vittorio began using the arrangement to maintain control.

Evelyn eventually built the Reed Foundation partly with money she had earned from the legitimate half of their business partnership.

She retained forty-nine percent ownership in what later became the Moretti Group.

"Why didn't Adrian know?"

"Because Vittorio rewrote the corporate structure. Adrian believed his father inherited everything."

"And my mother?"

"She knew some of it."

"Did Dad?"

"No."

Hannah wiped her eyes.

"Why fake your death?"

"Vittorio resurfaced four years ago."

"Before you died."

"Yes."

"He threatened you?"

"He threatened you."

Hannah's breath caught.

"He knew you were my heir. If I remained publicly alive, he'd eventually force me to transfer my shares. If I died legally, the trust froze until the original documentation surfaced."

"So you disappeared."

"I thought it would last months."

"It lasted three years."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Evelyn cried.

"I watched every birthday from a distance."

Hannah looked away.

"That doesn't help."

"I know."

"You should have trusted me."

"You were grieving your parents even years later. You were building your own life. I thought I was protecting it."

"You let Derek enter it."

Evelyn frowned.

"I didn't know about Derek."

"His father did."

"Charles Langford."

"You know him?"

"Unfortunately."

Evelyn explained.

Charles Langford had represented Vittorio in secret corporate deals.

When he discovered the trust, he realized marrying Derek to Hannah could give the Langfords access to billions.

"So Derek was sent to me."

"Yes."

Hannah closed her eyes.

"Did he ever love me?"

Evelyn's answer surprised her.

"I think he did."

"That almost makes it worse."

"Sometimes weak people love someone and still hurt them because they're more afraid of losing approval than losing love."

Hannah thought about Derek standing under the roses.

You're too fat to marry.

Whatever love existed inside him hadn't been enough.

She didn't need to hate him forever.

But she didn't need to return to him either.

Later that morning, Hannah entered Adrian's hospital room.

He looked pale.

Annoyed.

Alive.

She almost cried again.

His eyes opened.

"You're staring."

"You were shot."

"I noticed."

"You nearly died."

"Also noticed."

Hannah sat down.

"You aren't funny."

"I've been told."

Silence.

Then she took his hand.

"I thought I lost you."

Something shifted in his face.

"Hannah."

"I know."

"Know what?"

"The family connection isn't real."

His eyebrows lifted.

"Evelyn explained everything?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"And our grandfathers weren't biologically related."

"Excellent."

She laughed through tears.

"You're in a hospital bed and that's your response?"

"I was shot before I could finish an important conversation."

"What conversation?"

His thumb moved across her knuckles.

"The one where I tell you I haven't stopped thinking about that kiss."

Her heart beat faster.

"Adrian—"

A knock interrupted them.

Derek entered.

Hannah stiffened.

Adrian did too.

Derek raised both hands.

"Not here to fight."

"Then you're already making good decisions," Adrian said.

Derek looked at Hannah.

"My father contacted me."

"What does he want?"

"The photograph."

"Everybody wants the photograph."

"He said Vittorio is leaving the country tonight."

Adrian started sitting up.

Hannah pushed him back.

"No."

"Hannah."

"You have stitches."

"I've had stitches before."

"You nearly bled to death."

"Minor detail."

Derek almost smiled.

Hannah glared at both men.

"Neither of you is going anywhere."

Derek became serious.

"My father gave me an address."

"Why?"

"He wants immunity."

"From whom?"

"Adrian."

Adrian's expression suggested immunity was optimistic.

Derek continued.

"My father says Vittorio has enough evidence to destroy dozens of people. Politicians. Judges. Executives."

Hannah remembered the archive.

"And?"

"He'll trade everything for legal control of your shares."

"Why mine?"

"Because ownership gives him the legitimate empire. Without it, Adrian can have him removed from every board and company."

Adrian nodded.

"He's right."

Hannah stood.

"Then we end it."

That evening, against every recommendation, Hannah went to the meeting.

But she didn't go as bait.

She went as the owner Vittorio had underestimated.

Adrian participated remotely from the hospital.

Federal investigators waited nearby.

Evelyn provided decades of documentation.

Derek agreed to testify against his father.

Hannah entered an old private club at eleven.

Vittorio sat alone.

"You came."

"Obviously."

"Photograph?"

She placed it on the table.

He smiled.

"Smart girl."

"No."

Hannah sat.

"Just tired of old men thinking my life is theirs to arrange."

Vittorio's eyes hardened.

"You sound like Evelyn."

"Thank you."

He extended his hand.

"Give it to me."

Hannah placed her palm over the photograph.

"First, you sign relinquishment of every claim against the Reed trust."

Vittorio laughed.

"You believe you have leverage?"

"I do."

"What?"

"Your entire archive."

His smile vanished.

"Evelyn kept copies."

Silence.

"Every payment. Every shell company. Every judge."

Vittorio leaned back.

"You wouldn't expose your own family's history."

"Watch me."

"You'd destroy the Moretti name."

"Adrian knows."

Vittorio's expression changed.

"He agreed?"

"He helped deliver the records."

That was technically exaggerated.

Adrian had delivered selected documents to investigators.

Enough.

Vittorio stared.

"You think this ends with paperwork?"

"No."

Hannah stood.

"I think it ends with you understanding the thing Derek never understood either."

"And what is that?"

"My body isn't my weakness."

She leaned closer.

"My love isn't my weakness."

Vittorio's jaw tightened.

"And being underestimated isn't my weakness."

A door opened behind them.

Federal agents entered.

Vittorio didn't move.

He looked almost impressed.

Then Hannah's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Hannah Reed?"

"Yes."

"You don't know me."

"Who is this?"

"My name is Charles Langford."

Derek's father.

Hannah turned toward the door.

Vittorio smiled.

Charles continued.

"Before they take Vittorio away, you should ask where Adrian Moretti really got the money to buy Hamilton Estate."

Hannah frowned.

"Why?"

"Because it came from your trust."

Her blood chilled.

"And Hannah?"

"What?"

"Adrian knew who you were before you ever kissed him."

The line went dead.

Hannah slowly turned toward Vittorio.

May you like

He was smiling.

And for the first time since meeting Adrian Moretti, she wondered whether the billionaire beside the bar had been waiting specifically for her.
