Chapter 5 - The Man Adrian Had Buried

Adrian pushed Hannah behind a steel shelf.

"Stay down."

Footsteps moved through the darkness.

Slow.

Controlled.

One of Adrian's security men raised a flashlight.

A gunshot cracked.

The flashlight dropped.

Hannah covered her mouth.

Adrian moved without panic.

"Marco?"

"I'm good."

The guard's voice came from the floor.

"Hit the light."

Another man activated emergency illumination.

Red lamps flickered.

A figure rushed forward.

Adrian intercepted him.

The fight was violent and short.

Hannah saw a black mask.

A knife.

Adrian twisted the man's wrist.

The blade hit the floor.

His guard tackled the attacker.

Within seconds, he was restrained.

Adrian ripped off the mask.

Derek Langford stared back.

Hannah couldn't speak.

"Derek?"

Blood ran from his lip.

"Hannah, listen."

"You shot at us?"

"No!"

Adrian grabbed his collar.

"Then explain the weapon."

Derek looked panicked.

"They made me come."

"Who?"

"My father."

"Why?"

"He has my sister."

Hannah stared.

Derek had rarely discussed his younger sister, Claire.

She lived in London.

At least, that was what Hannah had believed.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Adrian searched him.

The gun wasn't his.

His phone contained a single video.

Claire tied to a chair.

A voice demanded Derek retrieve Evelyn's photograph.

Hannah felt sick.

Adrian released him.

"How did you enter?"

"Service tunnel."

"Show us."

Derek led them through a hidden opening behind the archive shelves.

The tunnel reached an old maintenance exit.

They emerged two blocks away.

Adrian's security secured Derek.

Hannah stopped him.

"He was trying to save his sister."

"He also entered an occupied room carrying a weapon."

"He didn't fire."

Adrian looked at Marco.

The guard held up a bullet.

"It came from deeper in the corridor."

Someone else had been inside.

Derek whispered, "I told you."

Adrian nodded reluctantly.

"Untie him."

Derek looked at Hannah.

"Thank you."

"Don't misunderstand. I haven't forgiven you."

"I know."

"For any of it."

"I know."

She believed him.

That didn't repair anything.

By morning, they had traced the hostage video.

It originated from an abandoned hospital in New Jersey.

Adrian wanted Hannah to remain behind.

She refused.

This time he didn't argue for long.

They entered the hospital through a loading entrance.

No Claire.

No Evelyn.

But they found something else.

A room filled with photographs.

Hannah.

As a child.

At college.

With Derek.

At foundation events.

Her home.

Her car.

Her grandmother.

Adrian.

The surveillance went back fifteen years.

Hannah felt violated in a way she couldn't describe.

"Why would Vittorio watch me this long?"

Adrian looked at an image of Hannah's parents.

"Maybe he wasn't watching you."

Hannah followed his gaze.

Her mother, Margaret.

Beside Margaret stood a man Hannah didn't know.

Adrian removed the photo.

"Lorenzo."

"Your great-uncle?"

"Yes."

Hannah looked closer.

Lorenzo had one hand on Margaret's shoulder.

They looked comfortable together.

Family.

"Then the letter was true."

"Probably."

Adrian searched the desk.

A file contained DNA tests.

Margaret Reed.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Probability of parentage: 99.98%.

Hannah sat down.

"So my mother was a Moretti."

"Technically."

"Which means I'm—"

"Related to me."

Hannah stared.

Adrian frowned at the documents.

"But differently than we thought."

"Still related."

"Second cousins."

"Adrian."

"I checked."

She rubbed her forehead.

"This is not remotely romantic."

"No."

They both remained silent.

The attraction hadn't disappeared.

That made it worse.

Adrian finally said, "We stop whatever this was becoming."

Hannah's chest tightened.

"Yes."

"Until we know everything."

She looked at him.

"Until?"

He stared back.

"I said what I said."

Before she could answer, Derek called from the corridor.

"Found something."

A recording room.

Hundreds of tapes.

One labeled:

EVELYN — FINAL CONFESSION.

Hannah inserted it.

Her grandmother appeared on screen.

Healthy.

Approximately fifteen years younger.

"If Hannah is watching this, then Vittorio has returned."

Hannah leaned forward.

Evelyn continued.

"Vittorio is not Adrian's biological grandfather."

Adrian went still.

"What?"

"His father, Matteo, was adopted into the Moretti family after Vittorio's eldest son died."

Adrian stared at the screen.

Evelyn spoke softly.

"The bloodlines were deliberately falsified because Vittorio believed enemies would target his true descendants."

Hannah turned toward Adrian.

He wasn't related to Lorenzo.

Not biologically.

Which meant—

Adrian looked at her.

Hannah looked away first.

Evelyn continued.

"Margaret was Lorenzo's daughter. Adrian descended from Antonio Bellini, a family friend Vittorio raised as his own."

Derek whispered, "This family needs a spreadsheet."

Nobody laughed.

Evelyn continued.

"But blood is not why Vittorio returned."

Her expression became grave.

"He returned for the company."

Adrian approached the screen.

"Moretti Group?"

"Half of it legally belongs to Hannah."

Hannah's mouth opened.

Evelyn explained.

In 1984, she and Vittorio reorganized the company after an internal war.

To protect future generations, Evelyn placed her ownership into the Swiss trust.

Upon Evelyn's death, control transferred to Margaret.

After Margaret's death, it transferred to Hannah.

But Evelyn had never truly died.

The transfer therefore had not legally activated.

Unless someone proved her death fraudulent.

Hannah understood.

"Vittorio needs her alive because if she dies now—"

"You receive the shares," Adrian said.

"And if she remains legally dead?"

"The shares are frozen."

Derek leaned against the desk.

"That's why my father wanted your foundation authority. He wanted control of the trust when it activated."

Hannah's stomach turned.

Derek's entire relationship with her had begun because of money.

Even if part of it later became real.

A phone rang.

Not theirs.

An old landline on the wall.

Adrian answered.

Vittorio's voice.

"Adrian."

"Where is Evelyn?"

"Safe."

"Claire?"

"Also safe."

Derek rushed toward the phone.

"Let me speak to her."

Vittorio ignored him.

"Bring Hannah to Pier Seventeen."

Hannah remembered the number.

"Why?"

"Because she carries what Evelyn stole from me."

"What?"

"Choice."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"We're not coming."

A scream sounded over the phone.

Claire.

Derek lunged.

"Claire!"

Vittorio spoke calmly.

"One hour."

The line went dead.

Derek looked at Hannah.

"You don't have to—"

"I'm going."

Adrian said, "No."

"Two women are being held because of me."

"Because of Vittorio."

"Difference doesn't save them."

Adrian stepped closer.

"If you walk into his control, he won't let you walk out."

"Then don't let me walk in alone."

Their eyes held.

Finally Adrian nodded.

Pier Seventeen belonged to a defunct shipping company.

Fog rolled from the river.

An old warehouse stood at the water's edge.

Adrian's men spread around the perimeter.

Hannah entered with Adrian and Derek.

Vittorio sat behind a long table.

Evelyn sat beside him.

Alive.

Hannah stopped.

"Grandma."

Evelyn cried.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

The kind of tears that came from three years of waiting.

"Hannah."

Hannah moved.

Adrian caught her hand.

Vittorio smiled.

"Smart boy."

Adrian stared at the man he had buried.

"You died."

"I retired."

"You let me mourn you."

"Grief builds men."

"No. Cruelty does."

Vittorio's smile faded.

Hannah looked at Evelyn.

"Why?"

Her grandmother shook her head.

"I'm sorry."

"Why let me believe you were dead?"

"To protect you."

"Everyone keeps protecting me by lying."

Evelyn flinched.

Hannah's anger cracked.

"I buried you."

"I know."

"I needed you."

"I know, sweetheart."

Hannah began crying.

Adrian's hand remained around hers.

Vittorio watched with impatience.

"Enough."

Adrian turned.

"Careful."

Vittorio laughed.

"There he is. The Moretti temper."

"I'm not a Moretti by blood, apparently."

Vittorio's expression sharpened.

"So you found the recording."

"You lied about everything."

"I gave you a name worth billions."

"You gave me a grave full of questions."

Vittorio looked at Hannah.

"The photograph."

She pulled it out.

"Why?"

"Because inside the original backing is a microfilm strip containing Evelyn's authorization codes."

Hannah remembered Adrian separating the photograph.

They hadn't seen microfilm.

Unless—

She looked at the photograph again.

The edge.

A second layer.

Vittorio smiled.

"Give it to me."

"No."

A gun appeared in his hand.

Adrian moved in front of Hannah.

Vittorio pointed toward Evelyn.

"Then she dies."

Hannah's heart stopped.

"Don't."

"Photograph."

Evelyn shouted, "Hannah, burn it!"

Vittorio turned his gun.

Adrian moved.

Everything happened at once.

Lights exploded.

Gunfire.

Derek ran toward Evelyn.

Hannah fell behind a steel crate.

Adrian tackled Vittorio.

Security flooded the warehouse.

Hannah heard Claire screaming from somewhere above.

Derek climbed the stairs.

Evelyn crawled toward Hannah.

"Grandma."

They embraced.

Hannah sobbed into her shoulder.

"I'm sorry," Evelyn whispered.

Then a gunshot sounded.

Adrian staggered backward.

Hannah screamed.

Vittorio stood near the loading doors with a pistol.

Blood spread across Adrian's white shirt.

Vittorio smiled.

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

Adrian collapsed.

Hannah ran to him.

His eyes struggled to remain open.

"Adrian."

His hand found hers.

"Hannah..."

"Stay with me."

Security surrounded them.

She pressed both hands against the wound.

"Please."

May you like

He looked at her.

Then his eyes closed.
