Chapter 5 - The Mistress Who Knew Too Much

The first time Ethan ever asked me to marry him, he stood on the roof of a half-finished office building.

The wind had been strong enough to steal his words.

His suit had cost less than the watch he wore today.

His company had only twenty-three employees.

His future depended on whether one investor would answer his phone call the next morning.

He looked into my eyes and said something I believed with all my heart.

"If I ever become successful, it will be because you never stopped believing in me."

Back then...

I believed him.

Standing outside the Brooks Global boardroom three years later, I wondered which version of Ethan Brooks had been real.

The man who cried because he couldn't afford an engagement ring...

Or the man who publicly placed my diamond necklace around another woman's neck.

Perhaps they had both been real.

Success hadn't changed him.

It had simply revealed him.

The receptionist looked up as I stepped off the private elevator.

Every conversation stopped.

Every employee stared.

Not because they recognized Claire Brooks.

But because they recognized Claire Vance.

Word had spread faster than wildfire.

The confidential shareholder filing released less than an hour earlier had already become the biggest story on Wall Street.

The woman everyone believed to be a quiet corporate wife...

Was now officially the majority shareholder of Brooks Global.

The receptionist stood so quickly that her chair rolled backward.

"Mrs... I mean..."

She didn't know what to call me anymore.

I smiled gently.

"Claire is fine."

She nodded nervously.

"The board is waiting."

"I know."

As I walked through the executive floor, people pretended to work.

No one actually was.

Computer screens displayed financial news.

Phones rang nonstop.

Employees whispered behind glass offices.

No one understood how their company had unraveled in less than four hours.

Neither did Ethan.

Not yet.

Outside the boardroom stood James Porter.

The company's oldest security director.

He had worked for Brooks Global since its first rented warehouse.

When he saw me, his shoulders straightened.

"Mrs. Brooks..."

I looked at him.

He corrected himself immediately.

"Miss Vance."

I smiled.

"You never needed to change."

His eyes lowered.

"I should have stopped what happened last night."

"You were doing your job."

"No."

His voice became quiet.

"I was protecting the wrong person."

Before I could answer, the boardroom doors opened.

Inside...

Silence.

Fourteen directors sat around the polished walnut table.

Corporate attorneys lined one wall.

Financial advisors occupied another.

Every chair was filled.

Except one.

The chair at the head of the table.

Mine.

Ethan stood beside the presentation screen.

His jacket had disappeared.

His tie hung loosely around his neck.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

He looked exhausted.

Frightened.

For the first time in years...

Human.

Our eyes met.

Neither of us spoke.

The silence stretched so long that one director finally cleared his throat.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"The majority shareholder has arrived."

I walked slowly toward the empty chair.

Not because I wanted to intimidate anyone.

Because I refused to rush anymore.

I had spent three years walking one step behind my husband.

Today...

No one walked in front of me.

As I reached the chair, Ethan finally spoke.

"Claire..."

His voice sounded almost unfamiliar.

"I think..."

"...there's been some misunderstanding."

I remained standing.

"No."

"There hasn't."

He forced a smile.

"If this is about last night..."

"I've already asked to speak privately."

I looked around the room.

"Did you ask privately..."

"...before humiliating me publicly?"

His smile disappeared.

"I lost my temper."

"You planned the gala for six months."

Silence.

"You ordered photographers."

"You prepared speeches."

"You invited the media."

"You gave away my necklace."

I paused.

"Which part happened by accident?"

No one moved.

One elderly director slowly removed his glasses.

Another lowered his eyes.

Everyone in the room had watched the viral video.

Everyone knew I was telling the truth.

Ethan inhaled deeply.

"Claire..."

"I made mistakes."

"But this company has nothing to do with our marriage."

That sentence almost made me laugh.

"Nothing to do with our marriage?"

I opened the leather folder waiting beside my chair.

Inside were copies of every major contract Brooks Global had signed during the past three years.

I placed the first one on the table.

"The Dallas logistics expansion."

Another.

"The federal transportation contract."

Another.

"The acquisition of NorthStar Technologies."

Another.

"The Singapore distribution agreement."

I looked directly at Ethan.

"Would you like me to continue?"

His forehead tightened.

"What are you trying to prove?"

I slid the documents across the table.

"Read the signatures."

He picked up the first contract.

His eyes narrowed.

Then widened.

Arthur Vance.

Second contract.

Arthur Vance.

Third.

Arthur Vance.

Fourth.

Arthur Vance.

His breathing slowed.

"No..."

he whispered.

"This..."

"...can't be right."

"It is."

"You told me your father retired."

"I lied."

"You said he didn't interfere in business."

"I lied."

"You said your family only owned real estate."

"I lied."

Every confession struck harder than the last.

Not because I enjoyed hurting him.

Because every lie had existed for one reason.

To protect the man I loved from believing I had bought his success.

Instead...

He chose to believe he had earned everything alone.

The company's general counsel quietly cleared his throat.

"There is another matter."

He handed Ethan a thick envelope.

"What's this?"

"The forensic audit requested by the majority shareholder."

Ethan looked toward me.

"You ordered an audit?"

"No."

"My legal team did."

He opened the report.

Page after page.

Expense records.

Corporate accounts.

Executive reimbursements.

Luxury travel.

Jewelry purchases.

Private dinners.

Hotel suites.

One transaction had been highlighted.

Diamond Necklace

$486,000

Paid using...

Brooks Global corporate funds.

The room fell completely silent.

Sophia had not received a personal gift.

She had received company property.

Purchased with shareholder money.

One director spoke first.

"Is this accurate?"

The Chief Financial Officer answered quietly.

"Yes."

Another director frowned.

"Then..."

"...this constitutes misuse of corporate assets."

The company attorney nodded.

"It may also qualify as breach of fiduciary duty."

Ethan looked genuinely shocked.

"I was going to reimburse the company."

The CFO avoided eye contact.

"There are no reimbursement records."

Another page.

Luxury vacations.

Private charter flights.

Five-star resorts.

Every trip listed Sophia as "Strategic Consultant."

She had never been employed by Brooks Global.

The boardroom doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Sophia rushed inside.

She was no longer wearing designer confidence.

She looked terrified.

"Ethan..."

"You have to help me."

He stared.

"What are you doing here?"

She ignored the room.

"My apartment is surrounded by reporters."

"My social media accounts have exploded."

"They're calling me a homewrecker."

Her eyes finally landed on me.

For several seconds...

Neither of us spoke.

Then she did something no one expected.

She began crying.

Real tears.

Not elegant ones.

Messy.

Panicked.

"Claire..."

"I'm sorry."

The room remained silent.

"I never thought..."

"...things would become like this."

I studied her face.

For the first time...

She didn't look victorious.

She looked disposable.

I finally understood.

Sophia had never loved Ethan.

She loved winning.

And now...

There was nothing left to win.

"Ethan promised me..."

she whispered.

"He said you were already separated."

The room turned toward Ethan.

Sophia continued.

"He told me your marriage ended months ago."

My heart didn't break.

It had already broken the night before.

Instead...

I simply looked at Ethan.

"Is that true?"

He couldn't answer.

Sophia wiped away another tear.

"He promised he would marry me."

Another silence.

Then she quietly removed the diamond necklace from around her neck.

The same necklace he had taken from me.

She walked across the room.

Placed it carefully in front of me.

"I'm giving this back."

I looked at the diamonds.

Then pushed the box away.

"I don't want it."

Sophia blinked.

"What?"

"You can keep the necklace."

Everyone looked confused.

I stood slowly.

"My father taught me something when I was little."

"If someone steals your crown..."

"...let them wear it."

"They'll eventually discover..."

"...it never belonged to them."

I looked around the room.

"My concern isn't a necklace."

"It's the company."

Every director straightened.

"I did not come here today for revenge."

"I came here for accountability."

I turned toward Ethan one final time.

"The board will decide your future."

"But before they vote..."

"I have one question."

I paused.

The room became perfectly still.

"When you stood on that stage last night..."

"...did you truly believe..."

"...you built this empire alone?"

Ethan looked at me.

His lips moved.

But no words came out.

May you like

For the first time since I had met him...

Ethan Brooks had absolutely nothing to say.
