Chapter 4 - Every Empire Has a Weak Foundation

The trading floor exploded into chaos.
Red numbers flooded every financial screen in America.
Within sixty seconds of the opening bell, Brooks Global had already lost nearly eighteen percent of its market value.
On CNBC, analysts stared at the live ticker in disbelief.
"This doesn't make sense."
"Silver Crest Capital just liquidated its entire position."
"Why would their largest institutional investor pull out without warning?"
"Did something happen overnight?"
The answer was yes.
Something had happened.
Her name was Claire Brooks.
Or rather...
Claire Vance.
Two miles away, on the thirty-seventh floor of Brooks Global Headquarters, Ethan Brooks slammed both hands onto the conference table.
"What do you mean Silver Crest pulled out?"
His Chief Financial Officer looked pale.
"They sold every voting share before the market opened."
"That's impossible."
"They already filed the disclosures."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"They're long-term investors."
"They've supported us for three years."
"They don't abandon companies."
The CFO swallowed hard.
"They just did."
Another executive burst into the room.
"Ethan..."
"The banks are calling."
"What now?"
"They've suspended the acquisition credit line."
Silence.
"What?"
"The bridge financing too."
"Why?"
"They won't say."
The room froze.
Nothing like this had ever happened.
Not in the company's history.
Not in Ethan's career.
His phone rang.
One bank.
He ignored it.
Another.
Another.
Another.
Six missed calls in under two minutes.
Then his assistant rushed inside.
"Reporters are downstairs."
"So?"
"They're asking whether Brooks Global is collapsing."
Ethan laughed.
Actually laughed.
"They're overreacting."
"This is temporary."
"We'll release a statement."
He turned toward the communications director.
"Tell the media our fundamentals remain strong."
Before she could answer...
Her laptop chimed.
She stared at the screen.
"Oh my God..."
"What?"
She slowly rotated the computer toward him.
Breaking News
VANCE HOLDINGS TERMINATES ALL STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS WITH BROOKS GLOBAL EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
Ethan frowned.
"Vance Holdings?"
"The logistics company?"
"Why would they care?"
No one answered.
Because none of them knew.
Across the city...
I watched everything unfold from my father's office.
Financial news covered every screen.
One anchor spoke rapidly.
"This appears to be a coordinated withdrawal."
"We've never seen multiple institutional partners exit simultaneously."
Another analyst interrupted.
"Someone very powerful is behind this."
Dad quietly sipped his coffee.
"I disagree."
Every executive looked toward him.
"It isn't power."
He looked at me.
"It's consequences."
My phone buzzed again.
Ethan.
Fourth call.
Fifth.
Sixth.
I silenced every one.
Then a message arrived.
Claire.
Please answer.
Another.
I don't know what's happening.
Another.
Did your father say something to Vance Holdings?
I stared at the words.
He still didn't understand.
He believed my father had merely made a few phone calls.
He had no idea...
He wasn't fighting Arthur Vance.
He was fighting mathematics.
Contracts.
Ownership.
Debt.
And signatures carrying legal authority.
At 10:17 A.M., another announcement hit the market.
VANCE BANK REVOKES FUTURE CREDIT FACILITIES TO BROOKS GLOBAL.
The stock dropped another twelve percent.
Trading volume tripled.
Investors panicked.
Large institutions began selling.
The dominoes had started falling.
Ethan stormed into the boardroom.
Every director was already waiting.
The atmosphere was unlike anything he had experienced.
No one smiled.
No one congratulated him.
No one mentioned last night's gala.
Instead...
The independent chairman quietly slid a folder across the table.
"You should read this."
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a shareholder report.
He scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
His confidence disappeared.
"This..."
He looked up.
"This is wrong."
The chairman slowly removed his glasses.
"No."
"It has always been correct."
Ethan pointed toward one name.
Silver Crest Capital
"They own twenty-eight percent?"
"Yes."
"Since when?"
"Three years."
He frowned.
"Who owns Silver Crest?"
Silence.
Every director avoided eye contact.
Finally...
The chairman answered.
"We've never been told."
"They've always operated through legal representatives."
Ethan threw the folder onto the table.
"Then find out."
The chairman nodded.
"We already did."
He pushed another document forward.
It had arrived only moments earlier.
Official.
Certified.
Signed.
The legal owner of Silver Crest Capital.
Claire Elizabeth Vance.
Ethan stared.
His face emptied.
He read the name again.
Claire...
Elizabeth...
Vance.
His wife's maiden name.
"No..."
he whispered.
"No..."
He laughed weakly.
"This is fake."
"It has to be fake."
No one laughed with him.
The company attorney quietly spoke.
"It's been verified."
"The documents came directly from federal records."
Ethan slowly looked around the room.
Every director was staring back at him.
Not with sympathy.
With disbelief.
One elderly board member finally broke the silence.
"You publicly humiliated..."
"...your majority shareholder?"
I stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Dallas.
Rain had begun falling.
Soft.
Steady.
Almost beautiful.
Dad joined me.
"He knows now."
"Not everything."
"No."
I smiled faintly.
"He still doesn't know who approved his first investment."
Dad returned the smile.
"He'll learn."
My phone buzzed once.
This time...
It wasn't Ethan.
It was Sophia.
Claire...
Can we please meet?
I read the message twice.
May you like
Then quietly locked the screen.
The game had finally begun.
