Chapter 12 - Grant Kingsley's Last Lie

Grant didn't run.
That mattered.
Not enough.
But it mattered.
We returned to Manhattan under federal escort.
Dr. Harlan was found drugged but alive in a guest bedroom at Grant's penthouse.
Grant insisted he hadn't put him there.
Security footage showed otherwise.
A black SUV registered to Kingsley Holdings delivered Harlan.
The authorization carried Grant's digital signature.
"Forged," Grant said.
Mara looked skeptical.
"So prove it."
He did.
The authorization had been issued while Grant stood at the altar rehearsal with dozens of witnesses.
Adrian had access to Grant's digital credentials.
Claire knew that.
When confronted, Adrian broke.
Charles had been blackmailing him for years.
Not over Claire.
Over gambling debts and stolen company funds.
Adrian had moved Harlan.
Altered records.
Tracked me.
Delivered information.
But he hadn't sent the birth certificate.
"Who did?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I don't know."
Grant stared at his brother.
"Did you know Elena was pregnant?"
"Three months ago."
"And you didn't tell me."
"Dad said he'd destroy Claire if I did."
Claire closed her eyes.
Grant laughed bitterly.
"Everybody protected somebody."
His gaze came to me.
"And destroyed somebody else."
For once, he included himself.
Federal investigators took Adrian.
Claire went with him voluntarily to give a statement.
Grant and I remained alone in a conference room.
He looked exhausted.
"Is Sophie mine?"
There it was.
Not accusation.
Not demand.
A question.
I could have refused.
Instead, I told him.
"Yes."
Grant closed his eyes.
His shoulders dropped.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then tears appeared.
I had seen Grant angry.
Drunk.
Arrogant.
Triumphant.
I had never seen him cry.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because the night I discovered I was pregnant, your interview aired."
He remembered.
He had told a reporter our marriage failed because I "couldn't accept certain biological realities."
His face twisted.
"I was angry."
"So was I. I didn't publicly destroy you."
"I know."
"You made me afraid you'd see a baby as an heir before you saw her as a person."
He looked down.
"And today I proved you right."
"Yes."
That hurt him.
It was supposed to.
"I won't fight you."
I studied him.
"What?"
"For custody."
"Grant—"
"I want to know her someday. If you decide I'm safe enough. But I won't use a court to take her."
I didn't promise anything.
Forgiveness wasn't a switch.
Trust wasn't owed because someone finally behaved decently.
"Thank you."
He nodded.
Then reached into his pocket.
My wedding ring.
He had kept it.
"I carried this for six months."
I stared.
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't admit I'd destroyed the only honest thing in my life."
He placed it on the table.
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
"Good."
A sad smile.
"Still Elena."
"No."
I pushed the ring back.
"Finally Elena."
I returned to Sophie.
Roman was holding her.
The sight stopped me.
This feared man with tattooed arms had my daughter tucked against his chest as if she were made of glass.
"She likes you."
"She tolerates me."
"That's basically love at six hours old."
He looked at me.
Something shifted.
For months, something had existed between us.
Neither named it.
Neither touched it.
Now I was free.
But freedom didn't mean I was ready.
Roman seemed to understand.
He handed Sophie back.
"Our people found who sent the birth certificate."
"Who?"
"Your mother."
I stared.
"What?"
"She was trying to force the truth into the open before Charles could take Sophie quietly."
I found Mom downstairs.
She admitted it.
"I knew Charles was watching you. I thought if Grant knew first, he'd protect his own child."
"You terrified me."
"I know."
"No more secrets."
She nodded through tears.
"No more."
It should have been the end.
Charles arrested.
Dad alive.
Sophie safe.
Truth exposed.
But at 4:12 the next morning, Mara called.
"Turn on the television."
Every major financial network carried the same headline.
KINGSLEY HOLDINGS CEO CHARLES KINGSLEY ARRESTED.
Then another banner appeared.
CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY DOCUMENTS LEAKED.
My stomach dropped.
A photograph of Sophie's birth certificate filled the screen.
Then the anchor said:
"Sources claim newborn Sophie Hart may control a multibillion-dollar corporate trust."
Roman reached for his phone.
Mine rang first.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice whispered:
May you like
"Now the whole world knows what she's worth."
Then Sophie's nursery monitor went black.
