Chapter 10 - The Father on Paper

I slapped him.
Eleven years of grief came out through my hand.
My father didn't defend himself.
"Again if you need to," he whispered.
I hit his chest instead.
Then I collapsed against him.
He held me.
I cried like the twenty-year-old girl who had watched a coffin disappear into the earth.
"You were dead."
"I know."
"I buried you."
"I know."
"You left us."
"I know."
Those two words were all he offered until I could breathe again.
Then he told us everything.
The crash had been staged.
Not by Charles.
By Roman.
I turned toward him.
Roman didn't deny it.
"Dad was going to be killed," Roman said.
Michael Hart nodded.
"Charles had already bribed a detective and someone at Kingsley Medical. Roman realized legal protection wouldn't be enough."
"So you let us think he died?"
Roman's face showed something I had never seen.
Regret.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Dad answered.
"Because Charles threatened you."
That stopped me.
"He had photographs of you at college. Your dorm. Your mother. He said if I surfaced, he'd kill both of you."
"So you disappeared for eleven years."
"I watched from a distance."
"That's supposed to help?"
"No."
Dad looked down.
"It's simply the truth."
The anger remained.
So did love.
That was the cruel thing about family.
Both could exist.
"Why come back now?"
"Sophie."
He looked toward the bassinet.
"Charles won't stop."
"Because of the trust?"
"Because of what the trust exposes."
Dad removed a chain from his neck.
A tiny metal capsule hung from it.
Inside was a strip containing numbers.
The password.
Roman entered it into the flash drive.
Files opened.
Hundreds.
Financial records.
DNA reports.
Payments.
Bribes.
Medical alterations.
And one video.
Arthur Kingsley.
Recorded shortly before his death.
"If this recording is being viewed, then my son Charles has attempted to conceal the truth."
Grant sat motionless.
Arthur described everything.
Charles's infertility.
Margaret's fertility treatment.
Grant and Adrian's biological parentage.
The trust.
Michael Hart's custodianship.
Then Arthur said something nobody expected.
"Michael Hart is not merely my employee."
My father closed his eyes.
Arthur continued.
"He is my biological son."
I stared at Dad.
Grant stared too.
Arthur had fathered Michael during an affair years before Charles was born.
My father was Grant's biological half-brother.
Which made me part of the Kingsley bloodline.
The family tree became grotesque.
But one thing became clear.
Arthur had transferred controlling authority to Michael because he trusted him.
After Michael's legal death, that authority passed to me.
Charles had arranged my marriage to Grant to absorb the voting rights.
The infertility deception was designed to push me out once he believed he had secured those rights through my signed waiver.
Except the waiver contained a fatal flaw.
My signature had been notarized on a day I was in Paris.
Forgery.
Mara smiled for the first time.
"Charles is finished."
Dad shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because you still need the original trust."
"Where?"
"Locker 417."
I stared at him.
"You opened it this morning."
"Yes."
"Where is the trust?"
Dad reached inside his coat.
Empty.
His face changed.
"What?"
"It was here."
Roman immediately locked the room.
Everyone was searched.
Nothing.
Then Grant looked toward the open window.
The curtain moved.
Roman rushed over.
Fire escape.
Footprints.
Someone had been inside while we watched Arthur's video.
My phone vibrated.
A photograph arrived.
Charles Kingsley holding the original trust.
Beside him was my mother.
Her hands were tied.
The message contained an address.
May you like
And one sentence.
BRING THE BABY.
