Chapter 6 - The Door at the Villa

Claire heard the gate alarm while Lily was asleep upstairs.

Emma was beside her on the sofa reading.

One soft chime.

Then another.

Claire looked at the security monitor.

A black car had stopped outside the villa.

Her stomach tightened.

“Emma.”

Her daughter looked up.

“Go upstairs.”

“Why?”

“Now.”

Emma saw Claire’s face and obeyed.

Claire called the local security company.

Before the call connected, her phone rang.

Adrian.

She almost declined.

Then she remembered Rachel’s warning.

She answered.

“What?”

“Get the girls away from the windows.”

Her blood went cold.

“How do you know?”

“My father has your address.”

Claire stood.

“What?”

“He tracked you.”

The intercom buzzed.

Someone was at the gate.

Claire moved toward the hall.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Claire, please.”

She stopped.

It was the first time in years she had heard fear in his voice.

Not anger disguised as fear.

Actual fear.

“Did you give him the address?”

“No.”

“Then how did he get it?”

“I don’t know yet.”

The intercom buzzed again.

Claire opened the security camera feed.

A woman stood at the gate.

Blonde.

Pregnant.

Claire stared.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“It’s Vanessa.”

Silence.

“What?”

“She’s outside my gate.”

“Do not let her in.”

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

Her face was exhausted.

No makeup.

No perfect clothes.

No triumphant smile.

She lifted both hands.

One held a folder.

The other held a phone.

Then she pressed the intercom.

“Claire?”

Claire didn’t answer.

Vanessa continued.

“I know you can see me.”

Adrian’s voice exploded through Claire’s phone.

“Don’t open it.”

Vanessa looked over her shoulder.

“I don’t have much time.”

Claire pressed the intercom button.

“How did you find me?”

“Richard.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“Why are you here?”

“To give you something.”

“Give it to my lawyer.”

“I tried.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“Someone got to her office before I did.”

“Rachel?”

“She’s fine. But the files are gone.”

Adrian heard everything.

“What files?” he demanded.

Claire ignored him.

Vanessa pressed the folder against the gate.

“Documents Richard doesn’t want you to have.”

“Why would you help me?”

Vanessa laughed once.

“Because he used me too.”

Claire felt no sympathy.

“That doesn’t make us allies.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“It doesn’t.”

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Emma stood halfway down.

Claire pointed upward.

Emma disappeared again.

Vanessa continued.

“I did terrible things.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“You had an affair with my husband.”

“Yes.”

“You helped destroy my marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You let my daughters believe their father replaced them because they weren’t boys.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

“Then forgive me if I don’t open the gate.”

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I only need you to know what Richard plans to do next.”

Claire’s fingers went cold.

“What?”

Vanessa looked toward the road.

A second vehicle appeared in the distance.

She stepped closer to the gate.

“He’s calling an emergency board meeting.”

“So?”

“He wants Adrian removed.”

“That’s not my problem.”

“And he wants the trust amendment approved before anyone discovers the baby isn’t Adrian’s.”

Claire stared.

“How?”

“By claiming your daughters’ interests were surrendered in the divorce.”

“They weren’t.”

“I know.”

“Then he can’t.”

“He has a document.”

Claire’s breathing slowed.

“What document?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Your signature.”

Claire stopped moving.

“I never signed it.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“He forged it.”

Adrian heard.

“What?”

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“Richard forged Claire’s signature.”

Claire felt suddenly calm.

The dangerous kind.

“Do you have proof?”

Vanessa lifted the folder.

“The original instruction email.”

The second car slowed.

Vanessa turned.

“I need to come inside.”

Claire looked at the monitor.

Two men stepped from the vehicle.

Neither wore a uniform.

Adrian said, “Claire, call the police.”

“I already called security.”

“Not security. Police.”

Claire understood.

She dialed emergency services from a second phone.

At the gate, Vanessa backed away.

One man approached her.

“Ms. Cole.”

She clutched the folder.

“You need to leave.”

“We’re here on behalf of Mr. Whitmore.”

“I know.”

The other man moved toward the keypad.

Claire’s security alarm sounded.

Adrian cursed.

“Claire, get upstairs.”

“No.”

“Get the girls and lock yourself in a room.”

Claire hated taking orders from him.

But this one made sense.

She ran upstairs.

Emma stood outside the bedroom holding Lily.

“What’s happening?”

“Nothing you need to fix.”

Claire led them into the master bedroom and locked the door.

Outside, voices rose.

Claire watched through the camera feed.

Vanessa shouted.

One man grabbed the folder.

She held on.

Then headlights appeared.

Three security vehicles turned onto the road.

The men released Vanessa.

They ran back to their car.

Within seconds, they were gone.

Claire exhaled.

Adrian remained on the phone.

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“The girls?”

“Yes.”

He was silent.

Then: “Claire.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

She closed her eyes.

He continued.

“I should have said it this morning.”

“You should have said it years ago.”

“I know.”

“No. You’re starting to.”

He didn’t argue.

Security escorted Vanessa inside.

Claire kept the girls upstairs.

Vanessa sat at the kitchen table.

She looked smaller than Claire remembered.

Pregnancy had softened her face.

Fear had erased everything glamorous about her.

Claire placed the folder between them.

“Start.”

Vanessa did.

Richard had hired her eighteen months earlier.

Not to sleep with Adrian.

To create photographs suggesting closeness.

Vanessa was in debt after a failed business.

Richard offered money.

At first, she believed it was corporate maneuvering.

Then Adrian became genuinely interested.

Vanessa liked him.

Maybe even loved him.

By then she had already begun a relationship with Evan Mercer.

It was secret.

Complicated.

And over, she claimed, before the affair with Adrian became serious.

Then she discovered she was pregnant.

“You knew Evan was probably the father,” Claire said.

“Yes.”

“But you told Adrian it was his.”

“I wanted to believe it could be.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Richard knew the timeline.”

“And encouraged the lie.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because a son changed everything.”

Claire almost laughed.

“So we were all pieces.”

“Yes.”

“Except my daughters.”

Vanessa’s expression tightened.

“They were obstacles.”

Claire stood so abruptly the chair scraped.

“Don’t call them that.”

“That’s what Richard called them.”

Claire stared.

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire walked away.

She returned moments later.

“What’s in the folder?”

Vanessa opened it.

Emails.

Drafts.

Payment instructions.

One message from Richard to a family attorney.

If Bennett refuses consent, reproduce prior execution specimen and proceed.

Claire read it twice.

Her signature.

Forged.

“Why do you have this?”

“Evan got access.”

“Where is he?”

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t know.”

“You left your apartment with him.”

“He drove me to the airport.”

“And then?”

“He said he had to disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian Cross is dead.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Vanessa looked terrified.

“He was found two hours ago.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Adrian was still listening through the phone.

“What happened?” he demanded.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Claire’s mind raced.

Julian had evidence.

Julian had exposed Richard.

Now Julian was dead.

She looked at the folder.

“Is this why you came here?”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

Vanessa placed one final document on the table.

It was a copy of the emergency board notice.

Meeting time: 9:00 a.m. New York.

Purpose: approval of revised succession structure.

Claire read the agenda.

Then she reached the final page.

Her forged signature appeared beneath a waiver.

But another signature was below hers.

ADRIAN WHITMORE.

Claire stared.

Vanessa whispered, “Ask him why his name is there.”

Claire lifted the phone.

Adrian had gone completely silent.

“Adrian?”

No answer.

“Did you sign this?”

His breathing came through the speaker.

“Claire.”

May you like

“Did you sign it?”

“Yes.”
