Chapter 4 - The Man in Room 814

Adrian moved before anyone could stop him.

He grabbed Julian Cross by the front of his jacket and slammed him against the wall.

“What did you do to Claire?”

Julian didn’t fight back.

“Nothing.”

“Wrong answer.”

“Adrian!”

Eleanor rushed forward.

Nora stayed near the desk.

Richard didn’t move.

That told Adrian everything.

His father had expected Julian.

Adrian released him.

“Start talking.”

Julian straightened his jacket.

“I worked for your father.”

“I know that.”

“No. You know the version he gave you.”

Richard’s face darkened.

“Careful.”

Julian looked at him.

“You stopped paying me months ago. You don’t get to threaten me anymore.”

Adrian pointed at the envelope.

“What’s inside?”

“Evidence.”

“Of what?”

“Your father’s succession plan.”

Richard stepped between them.

“This is family business.”

Adrian stared at him.

“My daughters are family.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“They are children.”

“They’re my children.”

“And you just gave them away in a courthouse.”

The sentence hit harder than a fist.

Adrian’s hands curled.

Richard continued.

“Don’t suddenly become righteous because your girlfriend may have lied to you.”

Nora whispered, “Dad, stop.”

But Adrian didn’t defend himself.

Because Richard was right about one thing.

He had failed Emma and Lily.

That morning replayed in his mind.

Take the girls.

I have a son on the way now.

He wished he could drag the words back into his mouth.

He couldn’t.

“Open the envelope,” he told Nora.

She did.

Inside were copies of trust documents, payment records, photographs, and emails.

Adrian read the first page.

CONSULTANT: JULIAN CROSS.

OBJECTIVE: CONFIRM CLAIRE BENNETT WHITMORE’S WILLINGNESS TO EXECUTE SUCCESSION RELEASE.

His eyes moved lower.

APPROVED METHODS: FINANCIAL PRESSURE, REPUTATIONAL PRESSURE, MARITAL LEVERAGE.

Adrian looked at his father.

“What is this?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Adrian turned another page.

Payments to media consultants.

Private investigators.

A public-relations firm.

Then photographs.

Claire entering a restaurant.

Claire leaving a therapist’s office.

Claire dropping Emma at school.

Claire at Lily’s pediatric appointment.

His family had been watching her.

For months.

Adrian’s stomach turned.

“You followed my wife?”

“Your estranged wife.”

“She was my wife when this started.”

Richard sighed.

“Claire refused to cooperate.”

“With what?”

“The trust restructuring.”

“So you tried to break her?”

“We tried to persuade her.”

Adrian threw the papers onto the desk.

“You call this persuasion?”

Richard’s voice rose.

“You know nothing about what it takes to protect a family enterprise.”

“I know enough.”

“No, you don’t. You’ve spent your life enjoying what I built while condemning every difficult decision required to preserve it.”

“Emma and Lily are not business problems.”

“They became one when Claire threatened to take control through them.”

Adrian stared.

“She never threatened that.”

“She didn’t have to. Her attorney understood exactly what those trust provisions meant.”

Nora stepped forward.

“Rachel told Claire not to sign because the amendment hurt the girls.”

Richard snapped, “And how would you know?”

Nora’s silence exposed her.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You’ve been talking to Claire.”

Nora lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Today.”

“You idiot.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“Don’t talk to her like that.”

Richard looked almost amused.

“At least one divorce has given you courage.”

Adrian ignored him.

He turned to Julian.

“Room 814.”

Julian nodded slowly.

“Vanessa met me there.”

“Why?”

“She wanted money.”

“For what?”

“Silence.”

Adrian’s throat tightened.

“About the baby?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor sat down.

Richard closed his eyes.

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“Whose child is it?”

Julian shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“You were sleeping with her.”

“No.”

“Then why were you in the hotel room?”

“She contacted me because she knew I worked for Richard.”

“How?”

Julian glanced at Richard.

“He hired her first.”

Adrian stared at his father.

“What?”

Richard said nothing.

Julian continued.

“Vanessa wasn’t originally supposed to become your girlfriend.”

The room went silent.

“What was she supposed to do?”

“Get close enough to create pressure.”

Adrian almost couldn’t process the words.

“What kind of pressure?”

“Make Claire believe your marriage was already over.”

Adrian’s face went cold.

“You’re saying my father hired Vanessa to seduce me?”

Richard finally spoke.

“That is not what happened.”

Julian looked at him.

“It’s close enough.”

Adrian turned.

“Explain.”

Richard walked behind his desk.

“Claire refused the trust release. Your marriage was already deteriorating.”

“So you hired a woman?”

“We hired a communications consultant who understood discretion.”

Nora laughed bitterly.

“Listen to yourself.”

Richard slammed his hand on the desk.

“She was supposed to be seen with Adrian. That was all.”

Adrian felt sick.

“You staged the first photographs.”

“Yes.”

“Claire saw them.”

“That was the point.”

Adrian stepped backward.

He remembered the first photograph Claire showed him.

Vanessa’s hand resting on his arm outside a charity dinner.

Adrian had told Claire she was paranoid.

He had accused her of not trusting him.

At the time, nothing physical had happened.

Then Claire pulled away.

Adrian became angry.

Vanessa became sympathetic.

One staged photograph became dinners.

Dinners became secrets.

Secrets became an affair.

His father had lit the match.

Adrian had burned down his own home.

“When did Vanessa become pregnant?”

Julian answered.

“That’s where the plan went wrong.”

Richard glared at him.

Julian continued anyway.

“She told me she was pregnant before she and Adrian were sleeping together.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you told my father?”

“Yes.”

Adrian turned slowly toward Richard.

His father looked away.

“You knew.”

“We suspected.”

“You knew.”

“We didn’t have proof.”

“But you let me believe it was mine.”

Richard’s composure finally cracked.

“I needed time.”

“For what?”

“To determine whether the child could solve the succession problem.”

Eleanor whispered, “Richard.”

Adrian stared at his father as if seeing him for the first time.

“You were willing to let me raise another man’s child because it was a boy?”

“We didn’t know it wasn’t yours.”

“You knew the timeline.”

“Vanessa said the dates were uncertain.”

“And that was good enough?”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You wanted a son too.”

Adrian recoiled.

“I wanted my father’s approval.”

The truth escaped before he could stop it.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian looked down.

Emma’s face came back to him.

Daddy doesn’t want us?

He pressed his fingers against his eyes.

“I destroyed my family for this.”

“No,” Richard said. “Your marriage was already damaged.”

Adrian looked up.

“You don’t get to tell me that anymore.”

He turned to Julian.

“Why send the photo today?”

Julian hesitated.

“I didn’t.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then who did?”

“I sent documents to someone months ago.”

“Who?”

“A lawyer.”

“Which lawyer?”

Julian looked at Nora.

“Rachel Kim.”

Adrian stared.

Claire’s attorney.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against my father?”

“Yes.”

“So Claire knows all this?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian grabbed his phone.

Nora stopped him.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling Claire.”

“Don’t.”

“She deserves to know.”

“She deserves one night without you.”

Adrian stared at his sister.

Nora’s eyes filled.

“You hurt those girls this morning.”

He swallowed.

“I know.”

“No, I don’t think you do.”

“I know.”

“You told Emma she was replaceable.”

Adrian flinched.

Nora continued.

“You don’t get to call Claire tonight because your new life blew up and ask her to comfort you.”

“I’m not asking for comfort.”

“Then what are you asking for?”

He had no answer.

His phone rang.

VANESSA.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Adrian answered.

“Where are you?”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“You need to come.”

“Where?”

“My apartment.”

“No.”

“Adrian, please.”

“Tell me whose baby it is.”

Silence.

“Vanessa.”

“I can explain.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?”

“Who the father was.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Vanessa began crying.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Before or after I put my name on the birth certificate?”

“Adrian, please.”

“Who else could be the father?”

Vanessa whispered, “Someone you know.”

His eyes opened.

“Who?”

She didn’t answer.

“Who?”

A knock sounded through Vanessa’s phone.

She stopped breathing.

“Vanessa?”

Another knock.

Louder.

“Are you alone?”

“No.”

Adrian stood.

“Who’s there?”

“I don’t know.”

The line went muffled.

Vanessa called out.

“Who is it?”

A male voice answered from the other side of her door.

Adrian couldn’t make out the words.

Then Vanessa gasped.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“He knows about the test.”

“Who?”

The lock clicked.

May you like

Vanessa screamed.

The call went dead.
