Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Became His Weakness

Dante Marino had spent his entire life learning one rule.

Never let anyone know what you love.

Because the moment someone knew what mattered to you, they knew exactly where to hurt you.

His father taught him that.

The streets confirmed it.

Enemies proved it.

But Clara Hughes never seemed to understand that rule.

And somehow, that made her the most dangerous person inside his world.

The morning after Marco Bellini appeared at the estate, everything changed.

The house was quieter.

Not peaceful.

Quiet like the moment before a storm.

Security guards stood at every entrance.

Every vehicle leaving the property was checked.

Every employee was questioned.

Dante trusted almost no one.

And now, he trusted even fewer.

Clara noticed it immediately.

She noticed the way the staff avoided eye contact.

She noticed the way Dante's men moved through the hallways.

She noticed the way Dante himself barely slept.

But she also noticed something else.

He never left Rosa's side for long.

Even when he was dealing with business calls.

Even when his men needed him.

Even when the entire city seemed to demand his attention.

He always came back.

That was the part nobody talked about.

The feared mafia boss everyone described as a monster was still just a son afraid of losing his mother.

That afternoon, Clara entered Rosa's room with her therapy equipment.

But Rosa wasn't looking at her exercises.

She was looking at Clara.

"You are worried about him."

Clara stopped.

"Who?"

Rosa smiled.

"My son."

Clara placed the equipment down.

"He worries about everyone."

"No."

Rosa shook her head.

"He worries about everyone because he believes he failed the people he loved."

The words stayed in Clara's mind.

"Why would he think that?"

Rosa looked toward the window.

"Because Dante survived."

Clara waited.

She knew there was more.

"There are people who think survival means you won."

Rosa's voice became softer.

"But sometimes surviving is the punishment."

Clara sat beside her.

"What happened to his father?"

Rosa became silent.

For a moment, Clara thought she wouldn't answer.

Then she spoke.

"His father was a complicated man."

"Good or bad?"

Rosa gave a sad smile.

"Both."

Clara understood.

She had already learned that people were rarely only one thing.

Even Dante.

Especially Dante.

"He loved his family," Rosa continued.

"But he made choices that created enemies."

"And Dante?"

"He tried to fix everything."

Rosa looked down.

"He was twelve years old when he decided he would never be powerless again."

Clara imagined a young boy standing in the middle of a world he couldn't understand.

A child who lost his father.

A child who decided fear was safer than love.

It explained more than she expected.

That evening, Clara found Dante in the private library.

He was standing near the window.

A glass of whiskey sat untouched on the table.

That alone told her something was wrong.

Dante Marino was a man who controlled everything.

Except his thoughts.

"You should be resting."

He didn't turn around.

"You say that a lot."

"Because you don't listen."

A faint smile appeared.

Then disappeared.

Clara stepped closer.

"How long has it been since you slept?"

"That's not important."

"It is."

Dante finally looked at her.

"You always do this."

"Do what?"

"Talk to me like I'm normal."

Clara frowned.

"Because you are."

The answer surprised him.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I'm not."

For the first time, Dante wasn't trying to intimidate her.

He wasn't acting like the powerful man everyone feared.

He sounded tired.

"I know what people say about me."

Clara stayed silent.

"They're not wrong."

"Dante—"

"I've done things I can't take back."

The honesty caught her off guard.

"But your mother doesn't see that person."

Dante looked away.

"She sees the person I was."

"And maybe she knows that person is still there."

His eyes returned to hers.

"You don't know me."

"No."

Clara nodded.

"Not completely."

She paused.

"But I know a man who sits beside his mother when nobody is watching."

Dante didn't respond.

"I know a man who remembers every detail about her medical condition."

"I know a man who pretends he doesn't care because caring scares him."

The room became silent.

Because Clara had said the one thing nobody else dared to say.

She saw him.

Not the name.

Not the reputation.

Him.

Dante looked at her for a long moment.

Then his phone rang.

The moment he answered, his expression changed.

The walls came back.

"Talk."

A pause.

His eyes moved toward Clara.

Then away.

"Are you sure?"

Another pause.

"Send it to me."

He ended the call.

"What happened?"

Dante didn't answer immediately.

That worried Clara.

Because Dante always had an answer.

Always.

Finally, he said:

"The person watching the estate was identified."

"Who?"

His face became unreadable.

"My head of security."

Clara froze.

"The person protecting you?"

Dante nodded.

"Yes."

The revelation was worse than any enemy attack.

Because enemies were expected.

Betrayal from inside was different.

"Why?"

"I don't know yet."

"Do you trust him?"

Dante looked at her.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

A few hours later, the entire security team gathered.

The man who had betrayed Dante stood in the center of the room.

His name was Victor Hale.

He had worked for the Marino family for fifteen years.

He had protected Rosa.

He had protected Dante.

He had been there during some of the darkest moments of their lives.

And now he stood accused of betrayal.

"Tell me why."

Dante's voice was calm.

Too calm.

Victor looked at him.

"I did what I had to do."

Nobody moved.

"Explain."

Victor laughed quietly.

"You really don't know."

Dante's eyes narrowed.

"Know what?"

Victor looked toward Rosa's room.

Then toward Clara.

And Clara immediately felt something was wrong.

"You brought another person into this house."

Dante stepped forward.

"Be careful."

Victor ignored the warning.

"She doesn't know who she is."

Clara's expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

Dante turned slightly.

"Victor."

But the man continued.

"Do you really think it was a coincidence that she was chosen?"

The room became silent.

Clara felt cold.

"What are you talking about?"

Victor smiled.

"Ask your father."

Dante's face changed.

"My father is dead."

"Is he?"

The words hit the room like an explosion.

Nobody spoke.

Dante walked forward slowly.

"You have one chance."

Victor looked directly at him.

"The woman you hired to save your mother..."

He pointed toward Clara.

"Was never just a therapist."

Clara felt her heartbeat increase.

"What?"

Dante looked at her.

Confusion crossed his face.

Then anger.

Not at her.

At the possibility.

Victor continued.

"Someone wanted her inside this house."

"Someone planned this."

Dante grabbed Victor by the collar.

"Who?"

Victor smiled.

"The same person who has been watching Rosa Marino for twenty years."

Before Dante could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The entire estate went dark.

A second later, an alarm sounded.

Security moved instantly.

Guards rushed through the hallways.

Clara heard Rosa call her name.

Then she heard something else.

A gunshot.

Not outside.

Inside the house.

Dante's expression changed.

He ran.

Not toward the enemy.

Not toward the security room.

Toward his mother.

And Clara followed.

May you like

Because she knew in that moment...

the war had finally reached the Marino home.
