Chapter 4 - The Enemy Who Knew Her Name

The man sitting in the security room looked like someone who had already accepted his fate.

He was not afraid.

That was the first thing Dante noticed.

Most people brought into that room were terrified.

They looked at the armed guards.

They looked at the cameras.

They looked at Dante Marino standing in front of them.

And they immediately understood they had made a mistake.

But this man didn't.

He sat calmly with his hands resting on the table.

His clothes were dirty from being dragged through the property.

His face showed years of exhaustion.

But his eyes remained steady.

Dante hated that.

Because it meant the man wasn't surprised to be there.

"You have five seconds," Dante said.

The man looked up.

"Five seconds for what?"

"To explain why you were standing outside my mother's house."

The man glanced at the photograph in his hand.

Then back at Dante.

"She never told you."

The room went silent.

Dante's expression didn't change.

But everyone who knew him noticed the shift.

A slight tightening of his jaw.

A colder look in his eyes.

"Who are you?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slowly turned the photograph around.

The image showed Rosa Marino twenty years earlier.

She looked younger.

Healthier.

Standing beside a young Dante.

Before the suits.

Before the empire.

Before the fear.

On the back of the photograph were three words.

"She knows everything."

Dante picked it up.

"Who gave you this?"

The man stared at him.

"Your mother."

For the first time in years, Dante Marino looked genuinely confused.

The guards exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Because nobody expected that answer.

"Impossible."

The man shook his head.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"Just something you never considered."

Dante stepped closer.

"Be careful."

The man smiled sadly.

"You sound exactly like your father."

The room changed instantly.

Nobody mentioned Dante's father.

Not unless they wanted to see the coldest side of him.

Dante's eyes became dangerous.

"You have one chance."

The man looked down.

"My name is Marco Bellini."

The name meant nothing to most people in the room.

But Dante knew it.

And the moment he recognized it, his face hardened.

Marco Bellini.

A former Marino family associate.

A man who disappeared twenty years ago.

A man everyone believed was dead.

"You died."

Marco gave a small smile.

"That's what your father wanted people to believe."

Dante stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Marco leaned forward.

"Your father didn't die because of an accident."

Silence.

The guards looked at Dante.

Waiting.

But Dante didn't move.

Because there were certain words that could change a person's entire life.

And that was one of them.

"My father died when I was twelve."

"I know."

"You weren't there."

"No."

Marco looked at the photograph.

"But I was there before."

Dante's hands tightened.

"Explain."

Marco took a breath.

"Your father discovered someone inside the organization was selling information."

Dante said nothing.

He had spent years building his empire around the idea that betrayal came from enemies.

Not family.

Not from inside.

"Who?"

Marco looked toward the security camera.

Then back at Dante.

"Your mother knows."

Dante grabbed the edge of the table.

"Stop saying that."

"Why?"

"Because you don't know my mother."

Marco's expression softened.

"I knew Rosa before you became Dante Marino."

The words hit harder than expected.

Before he became Dante Marino.

Before the reputation.

Before the violence.

Before he turned himself into someone nobody could hurt.

Marco continued.

"Your mother wasn't just a wife."

Dante remained silent.

"She was the person your father trusted most."

"And?"

"And she knew exactly why he was killed."

The room became completely still.

Outside the security room, Clara stood frozen.

She hadn't intended to listen.

She had only come downstairs because she saw the guards moving.

Because she knew something had happened.

But now she couldn't walk away.

Not after hearing Rosa's name.

Not after hearing Dante's father.

The door opened suddenly.

Dante stepped out.

He saw Clara.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then his expression changed.

"You shouldn't be here."

Clara looked at him.

"I heard."

His eyes hardened.

"Go upstairs."

"Dante—"

"Now."

The command was sharp.

But Clara didn't move.

For the first time, she saw something beneath his anger.

Fear.

Not fear of Marco.

Fear of what the truth might reveal.

"I know what it feels like to lose someone and not have answers."

Dante looked at her.

The words affected him.

But only slightly.

"My family is not your family."

"No."

Clara nodded.

"But pain is pain."

For several seconds, Dante said nothing.

Then he looked away.

"Rosa needs you."

It was not an order.

It was an admission.

He trusted Clara near the one person he loved most.

She went upstairs.

But the conversation followed her.

Because now she understood something.

Dante wasn't protecting a criminal empire.

He was protecting a wound that had never healed.

When Clara entered Rosa's room, the older woman was awake.

And she already knew.

"You met him."

Clara stopped.

"You know about Marco?"

Rosa closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked older than she ever had before.

"After all these years."

"Who is he?"

Rosa looked at her.

"Someone who survived."

"Survived what?"

Rosa didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the door.

"Did Dante hear?"

Clara hesitated.

"Yes."

Rosa looked away.

Pain crossed her face.

"I was hoping he would never have to know."

Clara sat beside her.

"Know what?"

Rosa's eyes filled with sadness.

"The truth about his father."

The room became quiet.

"Why didn't you tell him?"

Rosa looked down at her hands.

"Because when a child loses a parent, sometimes the truth doesn't heal them."

"Sometimes it destroys what they have left."

Clara understood.

But she also knew secrets had consequences.

Downstairs, Dante stood alone in his office.

The photograph rested on his desk.

His father's name.

His mother's secret.

Twenty years of questions.

All coming back in one night.

His phone rang.

He answered.

"What?"

A pause.

His expression changed.

"Where?"

Another pause.

"Don't touch anything."

He ended the call.

A security file appeared on his computer.

A photograph from outside the estate.

A vehicle parked near the gate.

A person inside.

Dante zoomed in.

His face became cold.

Because the person watching the house was not one of Victor Russo's men.

It was someone else.

Someone much closer.

Someone who should have been protecting them.

Dante picked up his phone again.

"Find out everything about this person."

A guard responded.

"Yes, boss."

Dante stared at the screen.

For years, he believed his enemies were outside the walls.

Now he wasn't sure anymore.

And for the first time in his life, Dante Marino wondered if the greatest threat to his family...

had been living beside them all along.
