FIFTEEN DAYS TOO LATE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Night Madison Learned the Truth

Vincent stared at the birth certificate and whispered, “No.”

Elena Carter’s trembling finger rested beside the name of Vincent’s biological father.

The surname had been hidden beneath a second layer of paper for thirty-three years.

One name remained perfectly clear.

ANTHONY MARCELLO.

Vincent suddenly understood why Anthony had spent his entire life keeping him close.

The cemetery went silent.

Vincent read the name again.

ANTHONY MARCELLO.

Not Carter.

Not Bellini.

Anthony.

His uncle.

The man who had raised him.

The man who had just spent weeks trying to destroy him.

Vincent looked up.

“You're my father?”

Anthony smiled.

“Finally.”

Vincent's gun remained on the ground.

For the first time that night, he seemed to have forgotten it existed.

Elena stepped toward him.

“Vincent, listen to me.”

He backed away.

“You told me he was my uncle.”

“I had to.”

“You let him raise me.”

“I tried to keep him away from you.”

“He lived in my house.”

“I know.”

“He taught me to shoot.”

“I know.”

“He stood beside me when I buried you!”

Elena flinched.

Vincent's voice broke.

“You let me think you were dead.”

Tears ran down her face.

“I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.”

Anthony laughed.

“You'll notice that's everyone's favorite excuse tonight.”

Vincent turned toward him.

“Shut up.”

Anthony's smile disappeared.

Vincent picked up the birth certificate.

“Explain.”

Elena looked toward Anthony.

“No more lies.”

“Mom.”

The word stopped her.

Vincent had not called her that since seeing her alive.

Elena's face crumpled.

“No more.”

She nodded.

“Anthony and I were young.”

Vincent said nothing.

“He wasn't the man he became.”

Anthony scoffed.

“I was exactly the man I became.”

Elena ignored him.

“I loved him.”

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“When I became pregnant, Anthony was already involved with the organization. He believed having a son would strengthen his position.”

“So why hide me?”

“Because he changed.”

Anthony smiled faintly.

“I became realistic.”

Elena looked at Vincent.

“He started talking about you before you were even born as if you were property. An heir. A weapon.”

Vincent glanced at Anthony.

Elena continued.

“Michael Carter knew.”

The man Vincent had always called his father.

“He knew you weren't biologically his.”

Vincent's breathing slowed.

“And he married you anyway?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he loved me.”

Elena swallowed.

“And he loved you.”

Vincent looked away.

That hurt more than discovering Anthony's name on the certificate.

Michael Carter had known.

Every birthday.

Every baseball game.

Every night he sat beside Vincent when Vincent was sick.

Every time he called him son.

He had known.

“He chose me?”

Vincent asked quietly.

Elena nodded.

“Every day.”

Anthony laughed.

“Touching.”

Vincent turned.

Anthony continued.

“Michael stole my son.”

“No,” Elena said. “I took Vincent away from you.”

“You had no right.”

“I was his mother.”

“And I was his father.”

“You wanted an heir.”

Anthony's expression darkened.

“I wanted what belonged to me.”

Vincent stepped between them.

“I never belonged to you.”

Anthony stared at him.

“You sound like Michael.”

“Good.”

That single word hit harder than a bullet.

Anthony's face changed.

Vincent noticed.

For thirty-three years, Anthony had tried to shape him.

And one comparison to Michael Carter still wounded him.

Daniel groaned on the ground.

Sofia dropped beside him.

“He's alive.”

Nico moved forward.

Vincent immediately reached for his gun.

Nico stopped.

“I didn't shoot him.”

“Put your weapon down.”

Nico did.

Slowly.

Anthony watched him with disgust.

“Pathetic.”

Nico looked at him.

“I'm done taking orders from you.”

“You've said that before.”

“This time I'm saying it in front of him.”

Nico looked at Vincent.

“I knew Anthony was my father.”

Vincent frowned.

Anthony smiled.

Elena's face changed.

“No.”

Nico looked at her.

“What?”

Elena shook her head.

“Anthony isn't your father.”

Everyone froze.

Nico laughed.

“You're confused.”

“No.”

“I have DNA tests.”

“Tests Anthony controlled.”

Nico stared at her.

Anthony's expression hardened.

“Elena.”

She ignored him.

“Nicholas, your mother was Catherine Bellini.”

“Yes.”

“Your father was Giovanni Bellini.”

Sofia covered her mouth.

“My father?”

Elena nodded.

“You and Sofia are half-siblings.”

Nico's face emptied.

Anthony stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Vincent raised his gun.

Anthony stopped.

Elena continued.

“Anthony convinced you that you were his son because he needed someone close to Vincent.”

Nico looked physically ill.

“He told me my entire life—”

“He lied.”

“No.”

“I knew Catherine.”

Elena's voice softened.

“She loved Giovanni before he married Sofia's mother.”

Sofia stared at Nico.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“About Nico?”

“He helped hide him.”

Nico stepped backward.

Everything he had built his identity around disappeared in seconds.

Anthony had given him a father.

A grievance.

A stolen inheritance.

A reason to stand beside Vincent while secretly resenting him.

All of it manufactured.

“You used me,” Nico whispered.

Anthony looked bored.

“I gave you purpose.”

Nico's face twisted.

“You gave me hatred.”

“Same thing, if used properly.”

Vincent looked at Anthony.

There it was.

The entire philosophy of the man who raised him.

Love was weakness.

People were tools.

Family was leverage.

Vincent finally saw how much of Anthony still lived inside him.

And suddenly he understood Madison's empty hospital bed better than he had before.

He had not become Anthony.

But he had been walking in his direction.

Until Madison left.

Until Leo was born.

Until there was something worth turning around for.

Anthony looked at Vincent.

“You're distracted.”

“No.”

“You're thinking about your wife.”

Vincent said nothing.

Anthony smiled.

“Even now.”

“Especially now.”

“You left an empire burning because she asked you to stay.”

“No.”

Vincent's voice was calm.

“I left because I finally realized the empire was never mine.”

Anthony's expression changed.

“It belongs to the family.”

Vincent looked at him.

“What family?”

Silence.

“You poisoned my mother.”

Elena looked down.

“You murdered Michael.”

Anthony's jaw tightened.

“You manipulated Nico.”

No response.

“You used Sofia.”

Sofia stared at Anthony.

“You endangered my son.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“And you almost let Madison die just to prove I'd choose you.”

Anthony smiled again.

“And you did.”

The words landed.

Vincent didn't deny them.

“Yes.”

Anthony seemed surprised.

Vincent continued.

“I chose your emergency.”

Madison's empty hospital bed flashed through his mind.

“I left her.”

The ring.

The letter.

Fifteen days late.

“I failed.”

Anthony studied him.

Vincent's voice became quieter.

“But you made one mistake.”

“What?”

“You thought I'd keep choosing wrong forever.”

Anthony's smile faded.

A phone rang.

Rachel.

Everyone turned.

She stood several feet behind Anthony.

She looked at the screen.

Then at him.

Something passed between them.

Vincent saw it.

“Who is calling?”

Rachel said nothing.

Anthony held out his hand.

“Give it to me.”

Rachel didn't move.

“Rachel.”

She slowly stepped backward.

Anthony's face hardened.

“What are you doing?”

She looked at Madison's photograph on her phone.

Vincent recognized it.

Madison holding Leo.

Inside the clinic.

His blood went cold.

“How did you get that?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Because Anthony knows where she is.”

Vincent raised his gun.

“Where?”

Anthony smiled.

“Too late.”

Vincent's heart stopped.

He grabbed the burner from Daniel.

Called the clinic.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

“Madison.”

He turned toward Daniel.

“Who knew?”

Daniel's face went pale.

“Only us.”

“Someone told them.”

Vincent looked at Rachel.

“Who?”

She began crying.

“Anthony made me.”

“WHO?”

“I sent the location.”

Vincent stepped toward her.

“Why?”

“He has my daughter.”

Anthony rolled his eyes.

“Everyone has an excuse.”

Rachel looked at him with pure hatred.

“You promised she'd be safe.”

“She is.”

“Where is Madison?”

Vincent demanded.

Rachel shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Anthony laughed.

Vincent turned his gun toward him.

“Tell me.”

“Shoot me.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Tell me where my wife is.”

Anthony smiled.

“You're finally calling her that again.”

Vincent's finger tightened on the trigger.

Elena grabbed his arm.

“Vincent.”

He looked at her.

“Don't become him.”

Anthony laughed.

“Oh, please.”

Vincent's eyes remained on Anthony.

Then slowly, painfully, he lowered the gun.

Anthony's smile vanished.

That frightened him more.

Vincent grabbed the burner.

“Nico.”

Nico looked up.

“Can you trace Rachel's transmission?”

Nico nodded.

“Give me the phone.”

Rachel handed it over.

Nico worked quickly.

Sofia pressed her hands against Daniel's wound.

“We need an ambulance.”

“No police,” Daniel muttered.

“You're bleeding.”

“Still voting no.”

Vincent paced.

“Anything?”

Nico checked the data.

“She sent coordinates twenty-three minutes ago.”

“Where?”

Nico looked up.

“The clinic.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“And the receiver?”

“Encrypted.”

“Break it.”

“I need time.”

“You have thirty seconds.”

Nico almost smiled.

“Missed you too.”

Vincent looked at Anthony.

“You planned all of this.”

Anthony said nothing.

“The cemetery. My mother. Nico. The birth certificate.”

Silence.

“You wanted me here while someone went after Madison.”

Anthony smiled.

Vincent understood.

The hospital all over again.

A crisis.

A phone call.

Something demanding his attention.

And Madison somewhere else.

Alone.

Anthony had recreated the exact moment that had broken their marriage.

Only this time Vincent saw it.

He looked at Elena.

Twenty-two years of grief stood in front of him.

His mother was alive.

Every instinct wanted answers.

Wanted time.

Wanted to hold her.

Then he looked toward the cemetery gate.

Madison.

Leo.

Vincent picked up his gun.

“Daniel.”

Daniel looked up.

“Keep my mother safe.”

Elena's face changed.

“You're leaving?”

Vincent approached her.

“I spent twenty-two years wanting you back.”

Tears filled her eyes.

He touched her face.

“I need to go to my wife.”

Elena nodded.

“Go.”

Anthony laughed.

“There he is.”

Vincent turned.

Anthony continued.

“Running after Madison again.”

“No.”

Vincent walked toward him.

“This time I'm running toward her.”

He struck Anthony once.

Anthony hit the ground.

Vincent didn't hit him again.

That surprised everyone.

“Nico.”

“Yeah?”

“Come with me.”

Nico stared.

“You trust me?”

“No.”

Vincent headed toward the gate.

“But I'm giving you the chance to change that.”

Nico followed.

Sofia stayed with Daniel and Elena.

Vincent and Nico reached the SUV.

Nico connected Rachel's phone to the dashboard system.

“I'm tracing the receiver.”

Vincent drove.

Fast.

But controlled.

His hands didn't shake.

“Talk.”

“Signal moved.”

“Where?”

“South.”

“Can you narrow it?”

“Working.”

Vincent called the clinic again.

Nothing.

He imagined Madison alone.

His chest tightened.

“No.”

Nico looked at him.

“What?”

“I'm not doing this again.”

“Doing what?”

“Arriving too late.”

At the clinic, Madison woke to silence.

She had fallen asleep sitting beside Leo.

Only for a few minutes.

She checked the clock.

12:21 a.m.

The room was dark.

“Dr. Reeves?”

No answer.

Madison stood.

Her incision pulled painfully.

Leo slept.

She walked toward the door.

Locked.

Her heart accelerated.

She tried the light.

Nothing.

Power outage.

“Reeves?”

Still nothing.

Madison picked up the emergency flashlight.

She opened the medical cabinet.

Scissors.

Bandages.

Medication.

Nothing useful.

Then she remembered Vincent.

Years earlier, after someone had followed her home, he had insisted she learn basic self-defense.

She had complained the entire time.

But she remembered.

Don't wait in the obvious place.

Find another exit.

Use whatever is available.

Madison looked at the window.

Ground floor.

She wrapped Leo carefully against her chest using a medical sling.

Then pushed the window.

Locked.

She grabbed a metal stool.

One strike.

Glass cracked.

Second.

Shattered.

An alarm should have sounded.

It didn't.

Someone had disabled it.

Madison climbed through.

Cold air hit her face.

She stepped into the alley.

Empty.

She began walking.

Then headlights appeared.

A black sedan entered the alley.

Madison stopped.

The vehicle blocked the exit.

Reverse lights?

No.

Another car appeared behind her.

Trapped.

Madison held Leo tighter.

The first driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not Anthony.

Not Vincent.

Dr. Samuel Reeves.

Madison stared.

“You.”

Reeves smiled sadly.

“I'm sorry.”

Her stomach dropped.

“You told Vincent I was safe here.”

“I was told you would be.”

“By who?”

Reeves looked behind her.

“Madison, give me the baby.”

She backed away.

“No.”

“Please don't make this difficult.”

“Who are you working for?”

“I don't have a choice.”

“Everyone has a choice.”

His face tightened.

“You sound like Vincent.”

“Good.”

The rear door of the sedan opened.

Another person stepped out.

Madison couldn't see the face.

Reeves looked terrified.

“Please.”

Madison grabbed the surgical scissors from her pocket.

“You touch my son and I'll put these through your hand.”

The figure laughed.

A woman.

Madison recognized the voice.

Her blood turned cold.

The woman stepped into the headlights.

Margaret Hale.

The nanny.

Madison stared at her.

“Margaret?”

The woman who had held her hand after surgery.

The woman who had helped her shower.

The woman who had helped her escape.

Margaret looked at Leo.

“I told Anthony you'd eventually run.”

Madison could barely breathe.

“You work for him?”

Margaret smiled.

“No.”

That answer was worse.

“Then who?”

Margaret looked at Reeves.

“Leave.”

He hesitated.

“Now.”

Reeves returned to the car.

Madison backed toward the wall.

“Margaret, what do you want?”

“The truth.”

“About what?”

“Your son.”

Madison's grip tightened around the scissors.

“Leo is Vincent's.”

“I know.”

“Then what?”

Margaret stepped closer.

“Anthony never understood why Leo mattered.”

Madison shook her head.

“Stay away.”

“He thought this was about bloodlines.”

“Stop.”

“He thought everyone was fighting over who inherited Vincent's empire.”

Madison looked toward the street.

No escape.

Margaret continued.

“But Vincent's empire is already collapsing.”

“What do you want?”

Margaret's expression changed.

“I want what Michael Carter hid before he died.”

Madison froze.

“What?”

“Something he left to Vincent's firstborn son.”

Madison stared.

Margaret stepped closer.

“A key.”

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

“Think about the hospital.”

Madison's heart pounded.

“The day after Leo was born.”

She remembered.

A nurse had brought Leo back.

His blanket had been different.

Something had been tucked beneath it.

Madison had assumed it belonged to the hospital.

A tiny silver object.

She had placed it inside Leo's diaper bag.

The bag Daniel had taken from the apartment.

Margaret saw recognition.

“There.”

Madison's face hardened.

“I don't have it.”

“But you know where it is.”

Headlights suddenly appeared at the far end of the alley.

Margaret turned.

A black SUV accelerated toward them.

Vincent.

Madison's breath caught.

Margaret pulled a gun.

Madison moved instantly.

She threw the scissors.

Margaret screamed.

The gun fell.

Vincent's SUV stopped sideways.

He was out before the engine stopped.

“Madison!”

She had never been happier to hear her name.

Vincent ran toward her.

Madison ran toward him.

Then Nico shouted from the SUV.

“VINCENT!”

Vincent stopped.

Margaret had recovered the gun.

She aimed.

Not at Vincent.

At Madison.

A shot exploded.

Vincent lunged.

Madison fell.

Leo screamed.

For one terrible second, Vincent couldn't see where the bullet had gone.

May you like

Then Madison looked down.

Blood was spreading across the front of her dress.
